Qatar the Place for Working Moms

ESL Teacher
By ESL Teacher

To all those new moms who may be relocating to Qatar...just wanted to inform you that it may be an excellent place to jump start your career.

From my personal experience Qatari employers are very welcoming to working mothers. Many places will provide free in-house daycare and if not, full-time daycare here only costs about $600 a month. Most companies also offer nursing hours. Many of the ministries working hours finish at 2:00pm thus you'll be home when your children are.

Also, sometimes you can negotiate with your employer, as I personally did, for a flexible schedule. So you can perform your work from home and only be on site when it is absolutely necessary.

Living in Qatar has easily given me the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom and carry on with a career. So, truly do take advantage of the environment around you!

the reason i left my job when i had my son was bcos i didnt want to leave him with a babysitter or leave him with a maid at home, i felt the time was precious and for me alone, so didnt have a problem staying at home.but yes u need to start work at some point of time. after a lot of thought i decided upon a maid, bcos even if my kid is going to school, there is someone to look after him if i am not home. the most essential part is geting a maid on your own sponsorship, bcos then you are responsible for each other.its a personal choice, i understand, but i have finally tuned my mind to accepting it that it may just be better.giving the benefit to so many maids, i have met and seen with my freinds, most are real nice and homely people.i am still battling with the idea of maid...lets see how it works out...

is this nursery opp the muntaza garden, seen from the road...it looks like in shambles.let me see if i can come up with any nursery names.it cud be diff finding something close to that area, but lets see....

Totally agree butterfly.

The cases of abuse by maids/nannies is public. Often it is discussed in most newspapers. I personally wouldn't ever take the chance/risk of leaving a little alone with a nannie.

I know. It is a difficult decision but I will have to start to work at some point and its something that I have been considering for the last few months. My husband is also insisting that I get a part time job because we do need some extra income and a nursery seems the best option for me...Its just something very personal, I wouldn't leave my daughter with a maid because you never know how she may treat your little one when you are not around.

Some people prefer maids, others prefer nurseries. I think both options are good as long as the mother knows that she has made the right decision and feel good about it and of course as long as the child is well looked after. I wouldn't cosider a maid, but I cannot explain why! I just wouldn't feel comfortable.

I can't remeber the name of the nursery I visited! It was right behind the Almuntazah co-operative. Could it be Gulf Nursery? It was really cheap. I asked to leave her initially three days a week for a couple of hours just to give it a try and they would charge me only 300 per month. But I never tried it cause my first impression was so bad.

let me see if i can get names of any nurseries in your area.the place you had been to, what was the fees they were charging, and are u specific about it being run by specific nationality.

i think we moms should form a small unit where we meet and our kids can play, interact...dont know how feasible it would be.

butterfly,

why do you want to leave your 15month old in a nursery so soon. let her enjoy your company till she is ready to start school, unless u want to work right now.

i know you are against getting a maid, i am too, but instead of a nursery i would prefer (my opinion) getting a maid whom your child will get used to, but you have to be with the maid till you are comfortable about it.so even if you work, or the child is at school or sick, its doesnt create a hassle, bcos all work places wont let their employess off regularly, and kids fall sick often.when i decide to work, i have to think about getting a maid, much as i would hate to but i would prefer my babies to be in the home environment where they are the most comfortable...

Please help me...

I'm having the hardest time trying to find a nursery for my 15 months old that suits both my pocket and my standards for hygine and care. AND it must be close to where I live (muntazah area).

I went to see one that was afordable, but I woulnd't put my daughter there in a million years. The ones I like are waaaay too expensive and too far from home.

Any suggestions?

PS. I will not consider leaving her with a maid.

what you have stated is right, if you have already worked and have a few contacts, then it can be of real help. i have myself worked partime, when my son was just over a year old and it was the most comfortable, bcos i had my hubby looking after him while i was away for 3-4hours.

most of the companies would like professional help, but maynot be able to afford, huge consultancy companies to do their work, this is just an example, so if you can do the work for them, it suits both parties.even teaching can be done on an hourly basis.

anyone interested can start first by placing an ad in the paper, you never know, someone could be interested in hiring your services, also i would suggest apply for parttime, positions just as you would for full time positions.

i have freinds working in the marketing field, at their own flexible time.the start may be a bit shaky, but once you are known, then you can work from home.

Unfortunately I don't personally know any companies that are directly looking for people to work from home at the moment. What you can do is have various interviews and discuss it. Or look for a position in the newspaper that you feel would allow for flexibility.

Depending on your credentials you can also be a consultant and thus make you own work hours. The options are endless, but you have to be creative and agressive to achieve results.

Good Luck!
