Qatar's Traditional Architecture: a Throwback to Simplicity
Qatar's traditional homes were designed to withstand the harsh desert elements, bearing up against blistering heat and cold winter rains. Before the epoch of fossil fuel wealth, villagers took note of the strong northern winds and the path of the sun when deciding the direction their homes would face. Using natural, and largely local materials, thick walls were designed to keep out the heat in summer, and insulate the houses in winter. Although simple in appearance, these old structures were conducive to the environment that helped create them.
How do you feel these traditional methods may be incorporated to contemporary Qatar?
