QAWS :: Site Clearance
QAWS has officially been given the all-clear from the authorities and we are now able to start the task of clearing the debris from the fire.
We have been advised that a large portion of this will need to be carried out professionally but we will be looking for a number of volunteers to help with the first and final stages of the clearance.
The first stage will be to remove all the metal roofing from the site by hand. The digger will then be used to remove the majority of the debris, with the final bits again being removed by bobcat and hand!
We have been offered the use of 3 bobcats from Byrne's rentals with no charge and are using this as a starting point!!
We are now asking if anyone knows of a digger/JCB which we can borrow for approximately 3 days to do the majority of clearing.
We will also need large trucks that can transport the debris to the municipal dump and it has been estimated that we will need a minimum of 6 trips. These can be rented from the industrial area but cost around QR700 per truck per trip so if anyone knows of a company that may be able to donate one for a couple of hours it would cut the costs tremendously!
The clearance should take 3 days and we will let you know the dates this will be occuring. We respectfully request that whilst this is taking place, anyone that is not involved with the clearance should refrain from visiting the shelter. There are to be NO CHILDREN on the farm whilst the heavy machinery is on site during these 3 days.
For health & safety reasons, anyone wanting to assist with the clearance must provide their own safety equipment including suitable footwear (preferably steel toe capped safety boots) and heavy duty gloves. Boiler Suits/Coveralls and safety goggles are also advised as there is a lot of ash and it gets EVERYWHERE! For this reason, face masks will be provided for everyone on site.
Anyone who can help with the clearance either with machinery or physical labour, please send an email to [email protected] and we will start to arrange all the equipment. We are aiming to get this cleared as soon as possible so we can start to look at rebuilding.

helping hands...and having fun...
All we need is the "day" and "time"...
I'll supply my special dish to keep things going! A nice hot chilli con carne and basmati rice! :)))
So I could get have the/my PPE ready and maybe get a few recruits to help out...
I know how to drive/use a bobcat...as I was once a sales engineer (back home) for these kinds of machineries.
Anyways, i volunteer to videotape you ladies while doing it or take pictures...lol
I was supposed to be the NYT feature, but my schedule didn't get me in the right place at the right time. . .so my buddy Konrad was the feature and I was a phone interview :)

I have used a backhoe and a bobcat to dig out a couple dozen tree stumps and clear/fill/level the holes , but it's been a while - 1998, I think. The hubbies might be a better bet than me, but if you run out of wannabes then let me know :)
I doubt that renting a tractor-trailer is an option here, but I also have a Class A license if it helps somehow - doubtful, but worth mentioning just in case.
Expat Sueno : I have lots that are willing to learn how to drive them - my husband being one!! But we could do with someone who knows what they're doing to be honest!
Lewis_Hamilton : We bought some fairly decent heavy duty leather gloves in Carrefour the other day in their tool section. Only problem is you'll have orange stained hands for a couple of days after using them!!

where could get heavy duty gloves or any kind of gloves for that matter??/
Do you have volunteers who know how to use the bobcats, backhoes, etc?
I'll still do my best to see if I can round up the volounteers that I had originally gathered.
Do you have a specific date in mind? I'll try to move fast but it's Eid coming up.

said he'll contact someone he knew and call Xena for feedback. I've started calling some other friends I know from way back...maybe they could help...
I am volunteering as well...but I'll get some PPE first. Please tell when?
It all sounds a bit intense health and safety wise but we want to avoid unecessary risks and accidents!!
We'll be posting on QL, www.qaws.org and our facebook page when the clearance will take place.
