Recession proof- Destination Qatar

Recession proof

Few destinations in the region can compete with the unique hospitality that awaits visitors to the emirate of Qatar. More properties are currently under construction, ensuring future visitors to the oil-rich country have an even wider choice of activities and places to stay.

...In just 48 hours, you relax and enjoy the proud Qatari culture shared with an open mind.
(CEO Middle East meets Ahmed Abdullah Al Nuaimi, chairman of Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority who answers our questions.)

Re say again?

Those are not my words you quoted but Ahmed Abdullah Al Nuaimi's, Chairman of Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority.

"Deaths in the Bible. God - 2,270,365

not including the victims of Noah's flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, or the

many plagues, famines, fiery serpents, etc because no specific numbers

were given. Satan - 10."

I have heard of Halal Tourism either in Turkey or geared towards Turkish holiday makers.

Essentially it is hotels with no alcohol and separate swimming pools for different genders.

"Tourism in Qatar is not about entertainment, but high-end leisure alongside business activities, combined with cultural landmarks and sports events.">>>Leisure is synonymous with entertainment. Isn't that basically the point of being a tourist- to be entertained? :)

Impressive number of arrivals too! Perhaps, transit passengers are counted too! Or all expats are considered 'tourists' here. LOL!

Stuff that for a game of soldiers.. who has that sort of money to spend on a room for the night? Qataris, ok- but they have usually have palacial pads anyway don't they?

Is it like some sort of 'One up on the Al Soandsos' to stay in these these places?

adey - First and foremost Qatar need to relax the visit visa rules . You need to pay 3 or 4 nights charges to the hotel who is arranging you the visa.

Dubai for example.. has given Emirates airline offices in many countires access to their DNRD system in which they can apply and get a visit visa in hours time.

Perhaps Qatar is aiming for a certain "type" of high end tourist..

Can't see the ordinary brickie from the UK coming over.

By GodFather.• 5 Apr 2009 07:38
GodFather.

I watched a BBC News program, showing Abu Dhabi offering Halal Tourism. As the Abu Tourism thought that they will make more money catering for the GCC clients than the Europeans.

Now any body heard the word Halal Tourism? What does it mean?

I honestly think that the people in charge here actually believe their own bullshite.

Like he "read" they were gonna build 101 hotels somewhere perhaps in another paper and so he quotes that figure even though it was false in the first place.

There isn't 101 hotels being built as far as I can count there are 10 MAX that I can think of and 5 are in city centre.

A couple of weeks ago the manager of the W said the average occupancy for Doha was 40% and the manager hope he could get 45% !!!! Not the 60& quoted.

29,000 Hotel rooms won't be built by 2012.

There is an abandoned building in the city centre that was going to be an intercontinental. Now its a 50 story concrete eyesore.

Qatar really can't face upto the fact that their economy is holed at the bottom and will not survive the end of the Oil and Gas boom.

Luckily for us we can save as much money as possible and secure our futures, sadly the Qatari's don't have such a luxury.

I'll lend you loads of DVDs :)

I want some low rent, subterranean, scum bag, dodgy leisure. Much more fun than the high end stuff.

I think a 9 hour 'Godfather' watch is on the cards soon.

I went to Four Seasons today with the twins to look for some 'high end leisure' at their lush pool. No day passes though and the cheapest family room QR 1,700 per night? Ok, high end leisure at the same price as a flight to Sri Lanka where you'd get the same for a 1/4 of the price?? I'm sticking to DVDs.. it's utter balls! Can anyone recommend somewhere reasonable for a day pass?

I can't think of anything that ruins a place faster than when a city opens itself to tourism. I've seen too many places all over the world go down the tubes within 10 years of making tourism their main resource.

I say save Doha...no more tourists!!!

the 5% that do come to our store actually looking for chocolate leave disappointed, unfortunately. But we thank them for their interest and order in some more cheese. We still promote ourselves as 'The Chocolate Shop' as their is not a chocolate shop near here for miles.

lies with the word 'Tourism', they should drop this word and replace it with another - any suggestions?

'Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority'

Hmmmmm.....It's like me saying that I own a store called 'The Chocolate Shop" but we don't really do chocolate, rather, we sell cheese as thats what 95%of our customers ask for. But we know that chocolate appeals to so many so thats why we kept the name.

this guy's on drugs.

i've been here a year now and i'm still trying to find the booming tourism industry everyone keeps talking about.

as for the booming 'shoddy' construction industry he didn't make mention that not one project has been finished on time and quite a few have been delayed indefinitely due to the crisis.

that's right, people come here for the culinary delights. there is a limit to how many falafels one can eat.

"Tourism in Qatar is not about entertainment, but high-end leisure alongside business activities, combined with cultural landmarks and sports events."

"We received 967,000 tourists in 2007. For 2008, as we are still checking the final figures, our estimation is about one million visitors.

So far we did not experience any slowdown in tourism. Our tourism is so far mostly business oriented, with 95 percent of visitors coming to Qatar for business purposes."

I pass no comment on this but just give an observation

that by their own figures only 50,000 came as 'non-business' tourists. Most people I know that have to travel for business just want to fly in, do the business and fly out; a one night stay, sometimes even departing on the same day as arrival. Time is money.
