to drive..its a privilege, not just something that is handed out because you are 16 and you have a car.

expats who have youngsters of driving age and they are driving...and yes...can't say as the youngsters in America, at least, are the safe ones either...however...that being said, the risks that are taken here are mind boggling/jaw dropping, to say the least. I've never seen some of the dangerous maneuvers like I have here in Qatar. Reminds me a lot of stunt driving, only its on roads with regular traffic. Speed is one thing....these are quite another...

I guess there wouldn't be many teenage drivers who AREN'T locals, would there?  I mean most ex-pats would be older I suppose, so therefore the youngsters on the roads would most likely be locals?  And young drivers anywhere in the world are the most likely to be the more accident prone through inexperience.

Like I said 'just a thought'.

I was in traffic in that road that night when it happened...it was horrible...Don't know what happened to the people involved but I certainly hope they are all right.

I have to agree with Alexa...not good to generalize, but a lot of the younger Qataris are definitely risk takers when it comes to driving...seen it myself..a LOT..Wish there was a way to make people realize that in the other cars there are people with lives..not just another vehicle in your way.

K80xx...I agree too...if they would only fine those that are responsible for serious accidents, I bet it would lessen the frequency. Or make them help out with people who have been permanently injured in automobile accidents, especially those due to negligence on the part of the drivers.

@shylocc, oh my God! You heard of an accident and it means that the Ministry of Interiors statistics are all wrong! What uni did you study at! I want these amazing powers of deduction too!

You also knew it was a local just because he was driving a cruiser! Good think Qatar has a law which doesn't allow expats to drive cruisers.

(Note, yes there's a high probability that a Qatari is driving the cruiser however negative assumption really annoys me, sometimes I feel people just come into Qatar to just moan and diss out locals)

Multiple car crash disrupts traffic

Published: Friday, 7 March, 2008, 02:02 AM Doha Time

Staff Reporter

AN accident involving three vehicles disrupted traffic for almost an hour at the Gulf Street in Doha yesterday.

Three motorists, including one with critical injuries, were taken to the hospital, police said.

The road is an important connection from the Corniche to the main market areas and has Jaidah fly-over and Mannai underpass at its either ends.

The incident took place around 5.30pm, according to eye witnesses.

One of the vehicles involved, a Mercedes station wagon, hit a coffee shop’s air-conditioning system and slightly grazed the glass door.

The speed limit on the road is 60kmph.

This maybe a time for picnics and outings. The other day I dropped my wife and son at The Mall and a parked SUV was on fire. Luckily the other two SUVs beside it did not catch fire but I guess they will need new paint jobs. Then yesterday near the Makhiya R/A a volvo was on fire. Have your A/C and electricals checked before going on long drives.

Qatman,

Well, the driver in Blue Sidan was missing and the car had hit the wall and was in a bad shape. I don't know what else had happened but every one was runing towards exit "massaya resturant" in basement.

Maxmo, What do you mean by something serious?  Was it something other than a car accident.

Just hoping that the hurt will make it to the hospital and survive. We too this afternoon almost hit by a crazy youngster, driving a nissan ultima, if i didn't pause, i am sure he will hit us. Again, A young Qatari is the rude driver...

I was in City Center few minutes ago and saw a blue salon banged into the wall inside parking exit area in basement and the whole crowd was runing towards outside leaving the empty car still blocking the exit path. When I moved towards exit, I found police cab towards right side and every one was runing towards it.

I could not make it out what was going on but it did looked something serious.

I can't believe it. A landcruiser? No way. And here i am, supposed to believe the ministry of interior / transport statistics that only 30% of accidents are caused by locals.

Perhaps he just didn't like the shop and it wasn't an accident at all.!
