The second-largest economy in the world

After three decades of spectacular growth, China passed Japan in the second quarter to become the world’s second-largest economy behind the United States, according to government figures released early Monday.

The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China’s ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower.

The recognition came early Monday, when Tokyo said that Japan’s economy was valued at about $1.28 trillion in the second quarter, slightly below China’s $1.33 trillion. Japan’s economy grew 0.4 percent in the quarter, Tokyo said, substantially less than forecast. That weakness suggests that China’s economy will race past Japan’s for the full year.

Experts say unseating Japan — and in recent years passing Germany, France and Great Britain — underscores China’s growing clout and bolsters forecasts that China will pass the United States as the world’s biggest economy as early as 2030. America’s gross domestic product was about $14 trillion in 2009.

And yet the sleeping giant will become mightier and soon would eat the weaker (economies), if not at all the western powers will embrace the economic strategies of Chinese.

In the end, China may become like Russia or the USA, but at present it is keeping a low profile and flexing its muscles in a different way.

and in that post by wei is the reason the rest of the world should be worried. With such arrogance what will they do with such power? Will they be benign or will they just simply replace american as the bully in the world?

First of all, i like very much when people talk about china. China has grown so much in the last 15 years that even people staying in China do not believe this. The average salary of a person specially in Beijing has increased from 5000 USD per year for a person to 45000 USD per year. We chinese always wanted to get respect on the world stage and beat americans and slowly we are getting that. With now, almost 70% of the Bonds floated for reviving US economy is held with chinese govt out of there 3 trillion dollars of foriegn reserves, we have US economy in our hands. India, China, EU and Middle East already depend on China Imports. No wonder in next 10-15 years we would be number 1. what you call here ... Inshallah.

This is just the beginning, China is still a developing country. So it has a lot of room to grow. It has the biggest impact on commodity prices — in Russia, India, Australia and Latin America.
