We are relocating from USA to Qatar in Spetember and  we plan to ship our household stuff.

I would appeciate the commnets on what to bring and what not to bring

Furniture ( bedrooms, dinnig rooms etc.)

TV, VCR, DVD players

Kitchen Appliances ( Mixers, blenders, toasters, etc.)

Etc..

I know that They have diferent voltage in Qatar but Somone told me that you could get a tarnsformers / converter for some of the appliances (not TV beacuse they work on PAL SECAM format)

Please let me know

I am coming with QP

I am coming with QP (indefinite contract) . They have the furniture allowance of About QR 45,000 depreciated over four years. we are moving for the long haul....

I figure that the furnitire allowance would cover the costs of shipping the stuff from USA. (about USD 10,000)

I was told that that good furniture in qatar is expensive..

I also told not to bring TV and appliances. and I am bringining any TV

the Small applicnaces Toaters, blenders, waffle iron, etc.. are not worth moving. But my wifewants to move the kitchenaid mixer ( big one)

I wouldn't bring anything electrical because of the voltage issues unless they're electronic with an automatically regulated 120/240v variable power supply like computers etc.

As for furniture, who's paying shipping? If the employer has a shipping/relocation allowance and you'd like to bring portions of your home with you then go ahead. Make sure they'll pay the shipping back home too at the end of contract.

Otherwise you can buy your furniture here although I find the local furniture market unimpresive and overpriced for the decent stuff.

Ask again if you need further clarification.

Haha ok same here. Well, not entirely the same. Drinking wine and watching Nadal lose. Ugh. Can't sleep.

unless you're somehow emotionaly attached to your furniture then i would highly advise against shipping any household items from the states.

Yes you would definitely need a transformer for all electrical appliances, and chances are your dvd players will be useless since the US and middle eastern dvd regions are not the same.

And if i'm not mistaken it would probably cost you more to ship your items all the way from the US than to actually buy new ones once you arrive in Qatar. You'll find that most household items offered in the Qatari market are cheaper, and you'll have no trouble at all reselling them once you decide to leave the country.
