Sick of his ‘man cave’? ‘She Sheds’ are a thing now ladies

Here at QL we don’t like to overgeneralise, especially when it comes to gender stereotypes, but this Internet phenomenon did catch our eye.

Traditionally, men have had their studies, majalis, man caves, or just designated couches in their homes. “A woman’s place is in the kitchen” is a phrase as timeworn as the former concept, but society tends to progress (if you want to think of it like that) in unexpected ways.

‘She Sheds’ are the latest—rather Western—trend that have picked up momentum on Instagram. Unlike the typical man cave, which is within the home’s walls, a She Shed is a separate structure, aimed as a retreat for women, because let’s face it—if you’re a mother, chances are everyone will come looking for you the moment you step into the next room for quiet time.

According to Erika Kotite, author of “She Sheds: A Room of Your Own”, these estimable structures require the following.

A yard: The free-standing outbuildings, which typically range from 100 to 200 square feet, need a little piece of land.

A purpose: Before designing your shed, define how you want to use it. A home office will have very different specifications from a gardening shed or art studio.

A budget: In Kotite’s book, the cheapest she shed was $500, but work with what you have and you might manage to beat that figure.

Natural light: Windows and skylights are important for those who want to make sure the space feels welcoming and connected to the outdoors.

A door: So you can shut it, and lock it.

A sound roof: This isn’t some old tool shed. Treat the space with respect.

Electric wiring: Apparently necessary if you want to work after sundown or use electrical equipment, but we personally think going old school and using candles or a gas lamp may be a good option if you aim to retreat from modernity. However…

Air conditioning: If you happen to live in the Gulf, this is an absolute must if you value your health in the summertime.

Ambience: Make yourself happy and decorate your shed as ridiculously as you like!
