Technology - No more fatal accidents

Saw the threads on road fatalities and remebered this article about research that Volvo is carrying out ..

Can we really have a time where we have zero fatal accidents ?

Auto-braking

Volvo is developing auto-braking technology to ensure cars come to a stop when they sense another car coming close to them - both from the front and the side.

Scientist Erik Coelingh has been testing his crash avoidance technology at their test track in Sweden.

"The car has a sensor system that tries to detect where the objects around the car are.

"There is a GPS measurement unit, a sensor on the roof and we measure the location. And what we really want to know is the relative position of this car as compared to the other car."

Early tests are good, the car stops automatically before hitting the balloon test car, despite Mr Coelingh's foot being on the accelerator.

He has high hopes for the research being carried out at Volvo: "We believe that accidents are not inevitable.

"And we have a vision that in - in the future there will be no collisions, will be no fatal accidents with vehicles any more."

BMW has had a version like this with their "Active Cruise Control" that has been available for years now. It uses radar to track the vehicle in front of you and can automatically adjust speed on the highway and slow you down if it detects a car in front of you travelling slower. On top of this feature it can detect imminent crashes if you approach a vehicle too quickly, it can auto brake to stop a collision.

Mercedes has been working on a similar system which also uses sensors on sides to "avoid accidents". The car will turn if space in the lane adjacent is deemed to be sufficient.

Soon these technologies will become common place in vehicles..

brit, i understand what you are trying to say..

i was talking about a situation when, at times, its best to avert the impact by changing the lanes without braking too heavily.

if the auto brakes get actuated by the sensors, the car cannot be turned to the adjacant lane as it might topple and the car behind ( which may not have auto brakes) can hit from the rear.

well, as the reserch is going on now, all these issues would be addressed too..

The positive effect is that the autobrake will reduce the damage of the impact.

fatal accident usually occures when the speed of the car is high. even if the autobraking system is actuated by the sensors, what about the huge inertia of the car which will force the tyres to skid over to some distance, probably hitting the other car. if the car is already at a controllable speed, unnecessary autobraking may result in it being hit by the car behind..

some thoughts..

I think if Design for Doha they should invent that car will divert once Idiot reckless driver is fast approaching. If the volvo just stop? then the land cruiser still smash him up to death... lol

The main aim of the technology is to avoid front end collision , especially with pedestrians or cyclists.

Ofcourse , if ALL cars were fitted with such a system, then rear end collisions would also reduce :O)

They have machine guns in the rear, Rizks. Just in case.

wat if the car from the back lost control and comes and hits back ? How will the sensor system work ?

Will it shout, STop Stop Stop for God Sake Stop ? :(
