A teenager abandoned her baby in the street after she fell pregnant during a trip home.

The 18-year-old British expat had sex with a man while back in the United Kingdom, but did not find out she was pregnant until she returned to Dubai.

Dubai Police said that she suffered psychiatric problems shortly after the birth and suspect that either those or the fear of being a single mother caused her to dump the baby in a residential area last month.

However, she was eventually traced after seeking medical help from a hospital.

The baby was discovered in Bur Dubai by a watchman, who called the police.

“He had been abandoned in a residential area and was in good condition. We took him to hospital,” a police official said.

The force’s Criminal Investigation Department launched a manhunt to find the infant’s parents.

“Our plan was to search hospitals because the mother might seek help after the birth,” the official said.

“A doctor at one hospital said he had treated an 18-year-old British girl for bleeding and thought it was due to child birth, although she told him another reason. We got her name and details from the hospital records and went to question her.”

The girl told officers that she had met a man in UK and had a sexual relationship with him before returning to Dubai.

“Later she discovered that she was pregnant,” the official said. “She went to hospital during the pregnancy but delivered the baby away from the hospital and abandoned him because she thought that she could not register the baby without the father.

“She was suffering from psychological problems, which can happen to a woman after birth. She might have abandoned the baby because of that, especially as she is young, or it might have been because she was afraid of the responsibility of raising a baby on her own.”

The official would not say whether any charges are to be brought against the mother. Having a child out of wedlock is illegal in the UAE. She could also face prosecution for endangering the child’s life by abandoning it.

Geez, she's an 18 year old child expected to behave like an adult. As for her parents, who knows if she is on "good" terms with them. How many of us have children who seem "shut down" as soon as they hit the teens.

but the question is where are her parents?

and it is irony that she did to her child what they did to her?

ok, i agree that some cultures have no problem in sex out of marriage, it is their own ideology.

but the least parenting job is to give her support and sex education at least.

She is 18 years old, so are her parents not in Dubai? Where were they when all this happened? And is she from another cultural background than British? Was she maybe afraid of repercussions because of that? Too much we do not know.

However, I fail to see why she would do this.

In England at the moment it is (unfortunately) quite the norm to have a baby when not married and they are guaranteed a house and benefits; so why do this?

She may have been suffering from a psychiatric disorder so prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt.
