Employer faces charges of torturing her two maids, killing one of them

A woman is accused of torturing her housemaids by locking them in a bathroom, making them drink bleach and beating them regularly.

Prosecutors told the Court of First Instance on Monday the employer also forced her two maids to strip naked then took photographs of them and threatened to publish the images. The alleged abuse only came to light when one of the housemaids died, the court was told.

The 45-year-old Emirati defendant denies charges of torture leading to death and unlawful imprisonment. A medical report showed that the housemaid weighed only 37kg when she died. It also found chemicals used in pesticide in her system.

The other maid, a 29-year-old Filipina, claimed the abuse began when she started work at her employer’s Al Rashidiya home last October. “They were only giving me one piece of bread, some water and a cup of tea for the whole day,” she said in records.

“I couldn’t even make food for myself as my boss used to lock the kitchen. She hit me with a bar. Once she claimed that I didn’t clean the bathroom well so she forced me to drink a small cup of detergent and Dettol and kept beating me until I drank it.”

“She gave us even less food and once told us to take off our clothes, took photos and threatened to send them to friends,” the maid added.

The friend also said that she saw the defendant beat both maids with bars.

The surviving maid told the court that on one occasion her co-worker, Kega, was feeling hungry and started looking through the rubbish for food. When the employer caught her she beat her up and didn’t give her anything to eat for five days.

“After that she only gave Kega onion, salt, sugar and water, but I started giving her some food. She was so skinny and was badly injured from the assault,” the maid said. Kega died a couple of days later and it is claimed that when the defendant called an ambulance she asked the surviving housemaid to wear a scarf to hide her bruises.

Is this not murder and plain sadistic abuse of other human beings or is it that this does not matter because the maids come from a poor and third world country. Why do they have differents sets of laws for different people. I suppose the countries where such things happen are aware that the world is watching their actions and what goes around certainly comes around some day

You make a valid point. Howeever, the reality is that these women will find some way of coming over because they are sacrificing their lives to support families back home.

What a tragedy, the women should be punished in the worst way, she thinks she can take their dignity by her money

The Filipino governments should be also blamed, it is not the first time, what they are waiting for

If your own country didn't protect your dignity NOBODY WILL.

That is the only solution.. all south Asian and South East Asian maid visas should be banned. Their own government should do that and not allow their women to go and work in the Middle East. It is true I am not really a fan of Pakistan but one thing I have to give them credit for.. They don't let their women go and work as maids in the Middle East.. That rule has been there since the 1970's.

Behead and hang in public where people can take there kids to witness (and learn) the fate if they mistreat when they grow up. Before that feed dettol, detergent and beat with the same bar and keep hungry for 5 days. Also ban the family from having any maid for life as all others would be aware of the acts but didn’t stop...akin to accomplice in crime.

This is premeditated murder in the first degree, given how artful the employer was in blackmailing them and getting the surviving maid to cover up her abuse before the authorities. No insane person can be as cunning hence an insanity plea should not suffice.

And yes the authorities themselves have blood on their hands for not taking enough measures in protecting the oppressed employees.

Back in Sri Lanka, there are intensive training sessions for all those oversees bound maids. Given the sickening rise in killings and torture these poor women must endure, I'd say they better start including martial arts and other self defense type courses to the list along with how best to serve tea!!

AUTHORITIES ARE DONE NOTHING. THEIR LAWS ARE ONLY APPLICABLE TO EXPATRIATES. MIDDLE EAST COUNTRIES DOES NOT HAVE HUMAN RIGHTS. IF YOU ARE NOT FROM A WESTERN COUNTRIES, YOU DONT HAVE THE RIGHTS.

But what are the authorities doing about this abuses. The way this things go on and on makes it look like the authorities are actually encouraging this abuse by not taking any drastic or punitive action on the persons who commit this crimes. Does this employer not deserve the capital punishment for killing a poor and helpless maid who was treated worse then a slave at her employers house. Even animals are treated better then this

Brit, it has nothing to do with "women". IMHO. It is inhumanity, period.

This lady must have mental problems, a sane human being generally does not do such things.

Woman's inhumanity to women.

She should be made an example of.

The only solution to such tragic maid abuse incidents in the middle east is to completely restrict the passage of all maids to gulf countries by all south asian nations.
