Threads

I am stunned about the threads created on here. Well, not the creation of them, but the responses to them.

I always thought a topic was posted to ignite an initial thought, and then as the thread creeps into further pages, the discussion EVOLVES, around all aspects of the issue posted.

Too many people here make a point relevant to the topic and then when someone responds to that person, instead of a constructive conversation, are accused of 'straying off topic', 'trolling', 'not addressing what the thread was about' or 'not understanding my comment'.....even if they were.

Well then the burden of proof is upon you to make that person understand.

It is sad that too many people hide behind the word 'trolling' just because they cannot defend themselves or their point of view.
The word 'trolling' has become an excuse for people to post vile, racist, inciting remarks, and then when they are asked to justify those remarks, hide behind accusing the OTHER person of idiocy.

Some people on here are really masking their intelligence.
Either put some thought into what you are going to post, in the knowledge that you will have to defend it, or don't bother posting at all.

A thread is an evolution. It should not be a 3 page long procession of people only say 'agree', 'disagree' or 'thanks for sharing'.

I know this thread will be a lightning rod for all the mindless.

If the crowd is behind you, you're facing the wrong way.

Sad.

QL has been going through a very bad patch. There have been too many users who have opinions that they wish to share, but are incapable of debating or seeing other peoples perspectives. Abuse becomes their ultimate defence mechanism quickly followed by being Oooooopsed. Then they spam the site and cause as much disruption as they can. Then return with new ID's and off we go again.

In the short time (compared to the real old time QLers) I have been a member, I have seen so many quality posters drift off. Some have left Qatar, some have had circumstances change so they are just no longer active. But they have gone, and there are so few quality posters taking their place. The ratio of true QLers (people who actually want to use QL properly) and idiots has become disproportionation.

I hang around in QL hoping that things will get better. Every now and then there is a glimmer of hope when an interesting thread breaks the surface. But most of the time I just can't find anything worth discussing.

Things are starting to look up. The site does seem to be settling down a bit, and I hope that QL can start to build a quality user base again while the quiet lasts.

The answer is simple, majority of the people that linger on QL are basically people with a lot of times on their hands during work hours. Qatar being the way it is with no social activities to entice the minds of all kinds has made QL the "go to place" to mingle with strangers.

Posts quality on QL has gone to the dogs a long time ago. Its really difficult to get a straight forward answer with people who like to behave like over grown kids or to remove their frustrations out...all coz they can hide behind a screen and say whatever the heck they want.

Half the people here dont know what a forum is meant for and the other half dont really know half the sheeeet happening around them to help you out.

Azi , Didn't you know , QL Posts can be redeemed at the Qatar Duty free, so the next time you Google, remember to to put away a little something for QL;-)

The problem also is with members who like to 'incite' a response to suit their egoes, or whatever they like, and spill it in other threads as well.

How do you control that? Why should a discussion head towards one proving the other is wrong. There is no right or wrong here.

Anyway, at the end, it takes all kinds to make QL, have seen some real low times at Ql and some real merry times, and thats why QL has got a huge member list and will continue having.

how many times? 100, 200? Now who stimulate the debates?

It would still be the same arguments as like this post. You keep saying the old times, when is the old times? Where are they? How many are still around?Throughout those years, who are here who stayed with the same id? Isn't those who hibernate for a long time and decided to come out again?

But I agree with Prism, if only the newbees will learn to search first before asking question, patience will prevail or at least the alarm button will quickly be gone after it's sudden alarm.

By Prism• 14 Jan 2012 22:54
Prism

I dont buy that QLers these days have become impolite or not informed....I personally would get miffed if someone without doing a search would come asking for a very very silly question which has been answered umpteen times....of the likes of cost of living, visa, unmarried but intend to stay together, etc etc. No harm in ridiculing them...in fact it helps them to learn how to run a search if they didn't knew otherwise. Most of the answers are already there, one needs to do a search, do an analysis and then ask for pin pointed questions for clarity or updates, if any.

Very true Sir_qofh, "TROLL" is not the only curtain used to mask ones weak debates, there is another favorite phrase as well. On any question to explain further a stated view, certain members are of the habit of saying "That is a too personal question , I care not to answer!"There! you are now safe from having to supply any valid arguments for your just stated stance!!!Where is the element of debate where you need to defend your FOR or AGAINST view at least once,… The problem is further compounded when even seasoned posters resort to such blatant unaccountability to their posts!

We used to have amazing 'fights' in the old days, going on for pages, but at least they were intelligent for the most part.

Sure, they could get heated, rude and personal sometimes but at least they were stimulating.

The difference that occurred sometime ago are the vast waves of ignorant, moronic and crude racist posts appearing.

I strongly agree with the thread that you have posted. I have been a member on QL for 3 years. I joined QL in 2008 if im not mistaken. It was nice. The Qlers were polite and informative. But nowadays, it really sucks. Like if you have any questions and seeking for an advice dont ever ask qlers coz they will just give you shyt, like really. Ql nowadays is full of fake losers, seriously. :-(

By azilana7037• 13 Jan 2012 18:41
azilana7037

The topics are just just fine and those who disagrees with another discuss/debate about it and though heated arguments overboard with personal tirades...it remains onboard.

Nowadays...just a phrase will trigger wordwars...not nice at all.

azzy, when we were very active on the board, it was a smaller group, although we had not met many members, there was respect for each ones views, then suddenly Ql got too famous, and all sorts of topics started appearing and going in all directions.

Now theres lots of personal issues running on board, its like one waits for a response just to take the subject away from the topic and someone is just waiting to make a racial or religious remark to upset a member.

Good evening to you SirQ.

and stay focus on the topic.

We had worst on QL before but them trolls fade away coz nobody pays attention to them.

I stayed away from QL for a long while due to work and of course the nonsense I read here. But now I'm seeing old posters coming back just like me.

And I hope that would be enough to get QL back on track...with fingers and toes crossed).

sir qofh, yes, true. I think it all has to do with "hardened" lines between ..hmm, nationalities, cultures, faiths.

And, of course, many people are simply unable to admit wrong doing of the "side" they are on, therefore resort to accusations, bashing etc.

Isn't what we see on QL a mirror image of what we see in the world in general?

And the rest, well, they are simply "intelligence , common sense ,challenged"..;)

I still enjoy the banter on QL. Sometimes it gets silly, but that's part and parcel of an online forum. I just wish that people would not get into personal attacks and also realise that there is no real value in "baiting".

Sounds nice.

I am not expecting a utopia! Also I am not being a hippy and saying we should all hold hands and sing a campfire song :-)

I just don't get why people make a statement then click their heels and run behind calling you a 'troll'.

I say it is a shame because between all the racist rubbish, there are actually some quite thought provoking things posted on here.

More of those and less of the rubbish, would be nice.

so many discussions were already debated about what he is mentioning in his original post. And if he is really a newbee, then it's quite understandable but it seems he's not!

Look at his older comments in other threads, does he practice what he preach?

By azilana7037• 13 Jan 2012 15:03
azilana7037

When I first found qatarliving way back February 2007, I was fascinated by the people who discuss topics and I learn a lot on how it is here in Qatar just from reading the posts and comments.

thetruth123, sexydoctor, ducky, Xena, gypsy and many to mention were some of the active posters then and it only goes heated as they make their views...and it goes personal...only onboard andnever on a personal level.

Nowadays...posters makes 'ridiculous' comments about the topic, make tirades and the toopic gets sidetracked.

Then the copy & paste generation...and the personal attack topics...racial bashing...SIMPLY CRAZY, indeed.

preach! That's simple!

By sir_qofh• 13 Jan 2012 14:43
sir_qofh

It is hard.

Say someone posts a thread on 'what should I feed my certain animal'.

Then from animals the discussion goes like this;

feeding of animal----> what to feed them----> experiences with pets and diet----> problems arisen from improper care ----> thoughts on keeping pets in the home -----> animal cruelty

Has the discussion strayed from the OP? Yes.

But it is still 'on topic'.

Inevitable, especially with someone seeking info, the info is given and the thread dies.

But on here (which is a nice thing) threads continue.

What is annoying is, halfway through the part say, for example, about 'animal cruelty', someone makes a crazy point, how does that person defend it?

"that is not what the thread is about".

Which is infuriating, because discussion is supposed to evolve, not be suffocated.

Your fame comes from making over-blown statements that you cannot defend, and then running circles around the question and not providing an answer.

Your fame is not from being a fame-maker.
