Toddler’s parents die trying to save dogs

A baby girl was left orphaned after her parents died trying to rescue their dogs from a fast flowing river in Scotland, their family and police said.

Darren Greenan and Laura Frey were walking along the bank of the River Garnock in Ayrshire on Sunday when their dogs went into the water.

The river had swelled due to heavy rain and the pets got into difficulty, prompting the couple to leave their daughter, thought to be aged about six months, in her buggy and go in after the animals.

Emergency services were called to the scene when it emerged the couple themselves were in trouble.

Frey, 30, was pulled from the water but later died in hospital. The body of her 33-year-old partner, Greenan, was recovered early on Monday. The bodies of two dogs were also found in the water.

Greenan’s cousin Laurie Miller told Scotland’s STV: “He was a brilliant guy. He swam like a fish. He was a family man. He would do anything for you. I can not believe it.”

Strathclyde police said: “At around 10.15am (0915GMT Monday) the body of a male, thought to be 33-year-old Darren Greenan, was recovered from the River Garnock near to the site of the initial incident.

“Sadly, the 30-year-old woman, Laura Frey, who was rescued from the water and was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment, died on Monday night.”

What a waste of Human life for only DOGS. Did the parents forgot that they have a 6months old baby girl to be looked after. Animals must be given priority for their health just like anyother animals but "HUMAN LIFE" is precious than all other living things/animals.
.
I'm extremely sad fot that poor little baby girl who was unable to remember & see her parents. To play with them & taken care by them with love & affection

Most people are very poor at judging the danger of fast moving water. The first parent went in to try and save the dogs, the second went in to try and save the first.

Should the second have stood on the water's edge and watched their spouse drown?

I agree that a human life is important. I also think my animals' lives are important. Would I choose to sacrifice the former for the latter? Probably not, unless the human was a monstor. Would I do whatever I could to try and save the latter - yes. However, situations and circumstances arise quickly and sometimes people make poor judgments.

I have dogs and Guinea Pigs and would put there safety equal to that of anything else.I am very sad for the child and hope she does have a happy life knowing her parents died saving something else they deeply loved.

poor baby ... but as tallg pointed out .. we dont think really at such situations ... pet dogs are ofcourse important .. they wouldnt have thought that they r risking their life ... may their soul rest in peace.

and may the baby get a proper care taker though none comparable to parents.

atif , How can you so utterly MISS the point!

Grow up and stop trying so hard to prove to the world that you are a moslim, and just be a good person will you................

(ps, I am referring to previous posts about pig culling too)

Now, that said...............poor little one.

I adore my dogs, and I would do anything to save them too...................but if I knew I would die in the process, I would not risk leaving my kids behind.

Key factor here (something Mr. Atif just can't seem to grasp) is that one does not see the future! I am sure they would have tried to survive...........YA THINK!!!!!????

The love for their pets blinded them to the hazzards. Most of us would probably do the same.

Rest in Peace.

Poor child to be left orphaned, but sweeping generalisation were made by others comments, such as no-one can look after a child but it's parents. Have you never heard of adoption? By the way dogs are not meaningless, just because they loved their dogs, doesn't mean they didn't love their child. In hindsight, the couple were hasty, but they paid for it with their lives. It's sad that people rush into judge, humans make mistakes. We don't know what the child will feel in later life. let's hope she will show more humanity & compassion than was shown here.I'm sure that the parents did not expect to die & they paid the greatest price for that.

STORY SEEMS STRANGE... BUT GIVES LESSON... NEVER GO AT RISK FOR MEANINGLESS THING'S...

I do not consider dogs meaningless things. they are part of my family and I too, would go after them. Perhaps not both my husband and myself at the same time..but I would still try and save them if they were at risk of drowning.

Atif...if the child is cared for by relatives, she will be fine and people CAN raise a child as well as the original parents, if they love her and care for her. How do you think so many adopted children end up so well balanced and loved??

She will most likely NOT end up a dog hater. Its how you raise children that makes them either love or hate animals...if you are taught they are part of the family, then you will treat them like part of the family. If you are taught that animals are dirty or meaningless things, then you will treat them like meaningless things and perhaps grow up to torture animals like some people do...

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.

Well, atif, they werent planning to get themselves killed. The did that coz, obviously, they thought they could save the dogs without killing themselves and all the rest.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Could have's and should have's are easy to shoot but difficult to follow at the crucial moment.

The difference between heroism and tragedy, often, is a chance event.

A sad tragedy. I agree with tallg - The victims of their own actions, but those actions were on the spur of the moment.

I remember once slamming on the brakes to avaoid a cat and nearly getting shunted by the car behind. He gave me a real earful, but it was a "spur of the moment" decision without checking the rear view mirror or identifying the accompanying risks.

May they rest in peace .

i do know that, atif. im just contradicting your hasty conclusion that just because she become orphaned because of dogs, she will grow up a dog-hater. people are capable of thoughts, of analyses, of behavior modifications. we may be shaped by the family/ environment/ circumstances that we are born into, but we are capable of changing its direction later on.

atif - it was the strong undercurrent that swept them away, not waves.

no other person can take care of a child besides its own parents. THAT'S UNIVERSAL.

atif, i don't think so, my friend. if the baby will be cared for by family members of these couple, she will grow up to be as caring like her parents. caring for your less brethren is generosity at its highest level.

I totally agree with you ppl and in the past I also have saved a pigeon & a cat being crushed by motorists.

.

But the think is in this scenario, the waves were fast & dangerous. The parents of a toddler are always very much attentive for their child and will not stay out of its site for a sec.

.

For this reason, I'm angry at those parents that suddenly they got so much paniced for the lives of those dogs that they forgot their most important obligation of taking care of their only child.

.

I think that girl will growup as a "DOG SLAYER"

A DOG SERIAL KILLER

ok then i stand corrected... i do hope the girl gets taken cared of... they must've loved their dogs like their own that's why they did what they did...

atif, have some compassion. People do irrational things when confronted with situations like this. The adrenaline kicks in and instincts take over. In hindsight, yes of course they shouldn't have gone after their dogs, but no-one can predict the way they'll act at the time.

atif, in times of danger, you automatically do what you are supposed to do and that is to save lives-whether human or pet animals. this is instinct. too bad, no one had the presence of mind to call help instead of doing the rescuing by themselves..

Really sad this happened... but for some people pets are equally important …they probably didn’t foresee the danger…Two lives lost in vain..

May God give the baby a loving family...
