It will happen in UAE, it could happen to Qatar as well. and it already started in India too according to my colleague.

Looking forward to the ban in Qatar too.

It doesnt give us a good feel of privacy if our emails, chat and the phone contents are synchronized to a server out of the country.

Anything that would affect the national security, shouldnt be encouraged.

More over, the teens are literally addicted to it.

Electronically being social is actually not communal.

And its impact is seen with the current affairs.

Wonder where it would lead us to.

I second the decision to suspend the services.

it matters not if its a BB or a mobile phone... if BB is banned, they'll just go back to using mobiles for texting while they are driving....

Venky... me, naughty... never....

BB should be banned, not because it is a seurity threat ..but because it is destroying the young generation of today... a lot of car accidents have happened due to telephone use...and BB doesnot actually help the situation..

When this is implemented, The UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority should exchange the BB units with another brand or money.

britexpat: yes, which is why I said, "and in the meanwhile has allowed the govt. security agencies access to its server farm in Canada."

As far as I know RIM has not actually installed the server yet. They have one for China, but for India, so far they have agreed to look at providing a viable solution..

primary reason for UAE blocking this is two:

1. BB works around the proxy block, which means access to politically unfavorable sites & porn sites are easy to access using a BB.

2. BBM allows the emirati youth to engage in dating, biggest problem for the govt across the GCC :)

India is not going to ban it, as RIM has agreed to put up a server in India and in the meanwhile has allowed the govt. security agencies access to its server farm in Canada.

UAE wants the same, which is why the date is Oct 11th, enough time for RIM to announce a solution.

It's to do with control and security. BB services like e-mail and IM use internal encrypted networks that are difficult for governments to monitor.

All other service providers in the UAE have to make their data fully available to government authorities.

well for the lazy ones, here is why:

"All BlackBerry services fall within the UAE regulatory framework developed by the TRA since 2007, however because of BlackBerry's technical configuration, some BlackBerry services operate beyond the enforcement of these regulations, the TRA stated.

BlackBerry data is immediately exported offshore, where it is managed by a foreign, commercial organisation. BlackBerry data services are currently the only data services operating in the UAE where this is the case.

Today's decision is based on the fact that, in their current form, certain BlackBerry services allow users to act without any legal accountability, causing judicial, social and national security concerns for the UAE."
