Vatican Dress Code: New Rules Annoy Visitors
The Vatican has imposed a dress-code for the Holy City aimed at scantily-clad tourists, according to the Daily Mail.
Visitors to St. Peter's Basilica have long been told to cover-up, but the dress-code is now extended to St. Peter's Square (the border between Rome and Vatican City), and prohibits bare shoulders, skirts above the knee and shorts.
This week, guards have started pulling aside men in shorts and women with bare shoulders and told they were not dressed appropriately. Some women are being told to buy shawls and scarves (a genius move for upping income in the area, if we might say) and men were told to buy pants nearby.
Maria, an Italian visitor, called the Vatican out to the Daily Mail: "Given all the scandals the Church has been involved in, what right can it have to be preaching about the morality of sleeveless dresses?"

Over the last few days, women and families in Sudanese and Indian/Pakistani attire are being turned away from Aspire Garden. This is regressive.. and racist IMO.
Ah, what a shame! Gone are the good old day when I grew up on the premises and walked around in a bikini :(
(Yes, it was safe...it was only the boys who had to watch out...)
Surely common sense tells you to cover shoulders and knees in a place of worship. No matter which religion...
FathimaH, Great thinking but the majority (human beings)are not thinking that way.
Rules are always annoying people. Even traffic rules annoy some people, and that's why they violate them. They are expressing their opposition to the rules. Because: who are they, to make rules for us?
Why do religious people annoy non religious people annoy religious people annoy other religions' religious people etc.. Can't we all just live and let live without annoying each other? Just a thought!
sajmarhab, do you what is a double standard?
As long as they're clear about what can and cannot be worn, rather than making some vague statement about "modest dress", who cares.
This isn't anything new, these rules applied when I was there in 2003...
hahahaha (I guess here my avatar is also being subjected to censorship for having a sleeveless dress....)
