'They treated us like terrorists': 100 Jewish students kicked off AirTran flight in New York after refusing to turn off their phones

A large group of Jewish high school students have been kicked off a flight after some refused to turn off their cell phones for take-off.

The school party of 100 students and eight chaperones were removed from an AirTran flight on its way to Atlanta, Georgia from New York City on Monday around 6 a.m.

Some have claimed that the airline overreacted to the senior students' actions with one saying that they were targeted for being Jewish.

One student Jonathan Zehavi told CBS: 'I think if it was a group of non-religious kids, the air stewardess wouldn’t have dared to kick them off.'

SouthWest Airlines said: 'Our crew, responsible for the overall safety of AirTran flight 345 from New York LaGuardia to Atlanta... had a group of non-compliant passengers leave the aircraft before departing the gate.

Non compliant. I don't want to be in a small space high in the sky with a bunch of non compliant kids. I say kick em off.

they were made to be implemented and correspondingly, should be adhered to. It is not you can choose what to follow and what is not. Of course you have the freedom to not to adhere to, but face the consequence. The problem with other is complaining about the consequence when they knew exactly why it happened (the consequence).

fubar what about not switching it off and putting in your pockets. But sometimes you forget to switch it off, there is no device fitted on the planes that can say if a phone is on or off?

Its all about being responsible. The flight attendance can check if you got a seat belt on but technically they cannot check if the phone in your pocket or bag is on or off.

I cannot remember the last time I got on a plane in this region and there wasn't somebody still on their phone as the plane was racing down the runway.

My favorite incident was on a Qatar Airways flight back from Bahrain where they kicked a local man off for being p*ssed.

Marco, I guess my point is a bit hard to follow.

But look at it this way - airlines also have rules about the weight and size of carry on baggage, which most of us tend to break from time to time. But that's because there is actually a discernible reason to do so - it is more convenient (and sometimes cheaper) to carry a large carry on bag rather than checking luggage. So it's understandable that people would try to break such a rule.

But having your mobile switched on? During a flight? Seriously, why??

The only reason for not switching it off, would be because you are just stupid, arrogant, or both.

The airline was right.

I must admit , I am dreading the time phones are allowed to be used openly in planes.

I don't want to listen to the person net to me droning on and on and disturbing my peace.

MM What if they had done the things you told up on the past? May be they we sure about the consequence that they won't listen any way so it lead to abort them from the flight.

Thelonius ,, Do you think there is anyone likes the rules ,,, Any rule.

You don't have to like ,, But you MUST follow when you are looking for the final result.

fubar: can’t see the connection tween ur comment and this thread.

But I’d imagine most airliners follow the same No-cell phone on board policy.

I really have never understood these morons who won't turn off their phones on planes.

Why? Why leave it on? What's one good reason to not switch off your phone?

How stupid are these poeple really? you book your flight and tick the "i accept" the terms and conditions box before paying. If they don't bother reading what they are agreeing to then they have no argument, it clearly states all mobile phones have to be switched off before take off on every airline booking terms and conditions. This is another pathetic play the race discrimination card and try to get compensation later, rules are rules and in my opinion regardless of your religion if you don't want to follow the rules that apply, find somewhere that have rules you are happy with and go there.

Emirates is way ahead in marketing and services..

The point her was that the group were rowdy and obviously a danger to the flight.

I think the airline did right.

MM... this is true... but not when someone tells you... no i am not going to do that... that's it... does not matter how long you smile.. it wont help.. so you grab a guy and kick him out.

My approach... always be nice at first.... hopefully that resolves the issue.... when a person does not appreciate mt effort to sort things out amerably.... then the other side kicks in... i think most people approach situation in this way... i am sure the flight attendant at first tried to be nice.

who you are/what faith you belong to..nothing matters..even with the fact that phones are mostly safe, no one wants to be on a flight with a planeload of unruly folk..and as others have said, its very annoying when people use the "because I'm Christian/Muslim/Hindu/Jew/Black/White" fallback without reason

MM - read the article.. it was not about being forgiven... they tried to bully the airline staff saying they are not going to switch their phones off...

Kids are kids... but they should be taught to be civil members of society from the early childhood..... otherwise they grow up as useless contibuters to society... as selfish users... thinking they are above the rules and laws... now some common sense should be exercised too... but in this case they simply refused to comply... hence they paid the price

Those who cannot follow the rules, that can then endanger the life of many, deserve to be forcefully removed regardless of their beliefs and creeds. The students are being plain spiteful in trying to turn their act of rebellion into some kind of harmless gesture and making the airline appear to be anti-Semtic!

Daaaahhhhhh.... this reminds me a sitcom one an African American behaved like a jerk and then blamed the reaction on his ethnical background.... he was doing it as part of comedy..... but these guys bteat him in his game.... they did it for real... and then even became famous for it... and had the audasity to play anti-semitic card.... wow !!

By fubar• 5 Jun 2013 08:38

Imagine if they started kicking people off planes in this part of the world for not switching off their phones - there would be howls of anti-Islam too.

There are always people who will try to find a way to blame others for their own stupidity.

I saw Qatar Airways kick an entire football team of kids and their coaches off for the same reason. We were stuck on the tarmac for 2 hours will they got off the plane.

generally airlines was right, to kick unruly kids off... rules are rules.

on a larger point, actually airlines are befooling us, there's no safety issue/impact using mobile phone or keeping it on......
