What are you expecting from QL?

King Edshel
By King Edshel

We all got our own stories and reasons on how did we find QL, join QL, became members of this great community.
I'm not going to ask why did you became a member or how, as I said we all got different reasons.

I want to ask what were you expecting from QL when you joined the community, after being a member for a year, two or maybe three ... Did you find what you were looking for? Do you still feel that everything is still the same? Did you achieve something during this period of being a QL member? Did QL add something to you and did you add something to QL community?

Some joined QL looking for specific information regarding Qatar, some became members looking for new friends here in a new country. Some to participate in the different activities held by some groups to have fun and make their stay here easier.

I don't normally open threads, but I felt the need to open this thread as many has lost their way or don't know what do they want anymore from this community.

Some choose to be silent, withdraw quietly, peacefully, leaving good memories of being members of the community. While some choose to stir issues and problems, forgetting that they were once before valued members who did good in contributing to QL.

I joined because after reading some of the threads, I found the members very knowledgeable and helpful.

I found that to be pretty consistent until this last December and January. Somehow the tides turned and things have not been the same. This was around the same time that there was turmoil in the Gaza strip.

There were several anti American threads posted around that time, but have slacked off some.

Regardless, I will continue to read and contribute.

I have met some wonderful ladies in the MMM. I am most thankful for that!

i joined QL for getting infos, then got hooked up with discussions and decided to join groups and met a lot of people of diff nationalities as well. i found friends for keeps too.

i expect it to be more informative. its a benefit for me, i can search where framing companies are, where to buy this and that, massage parlors, restos..etc. and if i couldnt find it, all i do is post!

for me i still enjoy visiting the site and i dont bother to read threads that i dont like..as simple as that...

Like others I joined before moving here, and it has been invaluable source of info - I found my dentist through recommendations here, my beauty salon, tried recommended hairdresser on the basis of comments here (that one wasn't a success..) and it's a great way of finding out what's happening

The only improvement would be an alert to threads I'm interested in like some social network sites have...

Maybe some day I might even meet some of you guys in person!

This is picture is obviously NOT me, I don't smoke..

I joined QL 2 months before I go here in Qatar, for the purpose of knowing more about Qatar, as what I'm expected, I never read about the way Muslim pray or any discussion of how to respect their culture so in contribution to the QL, I posted these threads in Filipino language for the benefit of the future Filipino coming here in Qatar.

SALAH (PAGDARASAL) UNANG YUGTO

SALAH (PAGDARASAL) IKALAWANG YUGTO

SALAH (PAGDARASAL) HULING YUGTO

Secondly, I recently contributed the Qatari National Anthem as my post even though I know that some of QLers knew, since my purpose is for the kababayan coming here in Qatar.

And to Ignite the heart of patriotism I posted

QL is the only effective media for the expat community in Qatar for various activities like buying or selling a product, finding jobs, making friends etc, to name a few

But there is one negative thing about QL - QL is addictive. No day is complete without reading a few posts in QL.

Since you have asked 'What else do you expect from QL' I am going to ask you for something- which is almost like asking for the moon. But still I am going to ask.

Can QL, with the representation so many expatriates from almost all natioanlities, make a signature campaing or something in those lines to send a strong message to the ministry to consider abolishing the ban on changing the sponsorship, atleast after the contract period-like in Bahrain, OR reduce the ban period from the existing 2 years to six months - as in UAE.

I know, that I am day dreaming but is it 100% unlikely to happen in QATAR?

Got introduced to QL to look for accomodation and did find one too.. Got enormous help in finding good eatery joints and places to hang out and in the process some friends too..

In fact QL helped settle down faster than expected...thanks to all the QLers who have contributed so much information.

Later started going through the posts and discussions and got interested in.. though wanna be more active but somehow due to paucity of time have not been able to so far and also my attitude to be to the point restricts me at times... intentionaly do not get into (though read through) the topics related to religion as I feel it is very personal and the discussions most of the times get carried too far...also posts on love an sex as most of the times they have no meaning at all (just that is how I feel..though I am sure it should mean to the one who posted and the others who participated)...what to do thats how I am... once in a while though commented on a few but I know it conveyed no meaning but then that was just with the feeling of WTF??

Always love to read the witty one liners from Darude, dracula, flan, TCOM, Tallag, Baldrig.., britexpat and the comments of SMOKE (the big cat as he calls him), Mr. Paul (mens)...and the inquisitive, somber ones from Alexa, Novita, FS... always find Zhyleiha (hope I got the spelling right) quite intriguing sometimes... ah ...how can I forget PCG... the fire raiser (sorry no offenses meant...in a positive sense).

Look forward to meeting some of the people here sometime ... as I am sure they would be more interesting in person then they sound .. and to participate in some community services as I understand that QL community is involved in it.. though I am not very clear as to how to go about it... but may be someone can guide me through..

As of now seem to be addicted to these pink pages (as Speed said once) and day does not get over without doing a "DARSHAN" of them ... and thats what I am doing now...

Cheers...

lol @ smoke...

Initially, I joined QL even before I came here to search for driving school. Also, to learn as much as I could about its culture, the do’s and don’ts etc. However, I was still culture-shocked when I finally arrived. lol I frequent QL for Ads and I open thread in case of specific information or to solicit ideas. Sometimes I get the answer sometimes not because there are many posters and not lucky enough for my Question to stay on top :-( but that’s ok...what to do we are big community now. Anyways, I share any info I know to others as much as I can and skip those threads that dont interest me…I joined 3 groups and I don’t have any complain or expectations w/ them.

I dont thin I had any great expectations except that I can interact with the people in the community and pass time. I was new and harldy knew any one around. Its been very very helpful initially, later got to know few, met few, which was again once a bluemoon. otherwise, whenver am online, one window of QL is open.. got bloddy glued to it.

Yet I still do come online from time to time to tell people I am still alive.

It became a place where most are dumping their psychic complexities. Let aside it is not properly moderated. Sometimes it is moderated based on personal issue or without any clear criteria.

Despite all of the above. It is a nice place when one feels bored and has nothing else to do.

i started reading and suddenly found myself immersed and enjoying every minute spent in QL. I did not expect anything as i was just treating it as a time pass. Then i found myself gaining new ideas and information and started to share info as well as much as i can and participating in the discussions. Then comes meeting new faces and joining in the meets-up.

we are diversified pool of individuals and we all have great minds (or that's what i wish to think.. :P)...QL has been an informative site for everyone and it would still continue to be like that... QL big brothers are doing their best to keep this site purposeful..

I see QL as a great initiative that speaks and documents the unwritten about Qatar’s culture. It's also an easy interactive minute-by-minute news bulletin on the latest buzz in town.I like being a member of a cross-cultural community rich in diversity.

I had no expectations of any kind when I first joined.

the good threads are endless ... I believe they should find a better excuse rather than everything was discussed.

The sun rise from the east side and sets in the west ... that is a fact, but it is not the ultimate secret of this universe ...

The community loses good members to gain more later, the community gain bad members to be overcome later by good members. It's natural, different views, good and bad, making sense and senseless, useful and harmful, entertaining and disappointing, pleasuring and offending

It's an open forum for all indeed, no one can force anyone to post something that he/she does not want to or the opposite.

It's a big community and guidelines should be there to regulate the flow of the posts and make sure that no one is getting effected or being offended by the others posts.

For sure the admins of QL won't be able to entertain the posts of all members or just let it be, but for sure they are doing their best to keep the peace ...

King…I can understand…

In general I don’t expect anything… I accept whatever comes along..hence no disappointments in Life.

I joined QL because I was totally free at work and I cannot access my personal mails or other social networking sites from Office.. anyway I was into those site much. Then I found QL…which was very interesting. As I was living here for long time.. I could gave information to new people in settling down. QL was not this big….so the members had more interaction with each other…there was no ‘PM’ option….everything was open..lol I met few people before QLSG….Five of them….all others except Sarat is no more active..

I did meet some good people here.….not many bad…probably because I am careful about whom I interact with. …made a mistake once…..rather a wrong judgment… but it was repairable…Learned a lot about other culture and their way of thinking…which was quite alien to me!

I am really glad to have few good friends whom I cherish… and recently got a lil brother who thinks he is as old as my grandfather..lol

Owen…QL is the same… I guess its you who is not...:( How are you gal?

Joined to search for my first car, was lurking around before that reading all the news happenings in Qatar, discussions on various topics. Never thought i'd actually go out and meet any of the people on this website, but i dont know how and why i did, but i'm glad i did, made a lot of good friends along the way, lost some too ;)

My life made a complete 180 degree turn after that, I went on to release my very first album titled "This is how I swagg" which was on the billboards in UK top 5 for 7 weeks in a row, made a couple of movies too, now i'm rolling in money so I've started taking drugs, I'll be dying soon and then i'll be a legend.
