What do you want in a nightclub?

Olive
By Olive

Hi Guys,

I'm just doing a bit of research and I'd like to find out your opinions on some of the nightclubs here in Doha.

Which one's do you think are the best?

Why?

Which one's are the worst?

Why?

And what kind of night club would you like to see open in Doha?

Cheers. :)

Yeah baldrick the outside areas at Aussie legends the rugby club and the ramada are really nice places!! Sorry to have brought it up, silly me.

I agree with bouncers, as I posted earlier. If there's a problem with the male/female ratio, i dont think banning types of women (Russian, Muslim, Black, whichever type of racism you're trying to advocate...) is the answer.

Especially not the Russians, though, they're gorgeous! (And so friendly...)

By qatarisun• 3 Sep 2008 19:27

plzzzz no russian prostitutes in the bar! it should be written in a large bold font: NO WOMEN FROM RUSSIA ARE ALLOWED! and ask for the ID...

also women from Russia must be banned from qatar completely... they already over flooded dubai.. it's not enough.. they are coming here as well..

I just typed a super long story and it got deleted.

So in short:

Music - Keep it more loungy until 11/12. After that you can turn up the beats more. No live bands. One thing you could go for is the combination Hed kandi and others usually do. A dj and a sax or another instrument. Keep it a mix. Pearl has the tendency to swap to arab music which makes everyone but the lebanese leave after a while. (And most don't want to come back).

Dress code - Pearl was stupid to ban jeans, they have changed it now. Keep it decent though. There is skimpy and skimpy. People should dress up a bit.

Smoking - I don't smoke. So i would prefer non smoking. But if you allow smoking make sure the ventilation is working very well. Otherwise go for an outside-inside area.

Policy - No booking tables etc way in advance to be able to get in. Full is full and that way people will just show up in time in stead of booking a table and showing up late with a club half empty half the time.

Guests- Make sure you maintain a good mixture. As soon as one nationality takes over thats it... Your done. Labled. Very hard to turn that around.

No VIP area's. Something i saw someone say earlier. Very good point. Creates a division that doesn't need to be there. Only annoys others. Will come back and bite you in the &^%.

May i ask why you are asking this?? Kind of curious now.

Actually, the more I think about it the more amazing I find it that there really isn't a decent club in Doha. Maybe it's because most of them are in hotels, or perhaps it because of the punters. I can't work it out, but I wish someone would and get it right for once.

By Oryx• 3 Sep 2008 16:53
Oryx

Actually apart from fighting..English men cant dance... you want men who can dance in a club too.

Girls love men who can dance...

By Oryx• 3 Sep 2008 16:48
Oryx

Actually I think design is key...

I like the design of the Pearl a lot....just not the atmosphere.... some right bling wearing twats in there.

I like Admirals with the sea view terrace but too overwhelmingly Lebanese

ditto La Cigale terrace..

you may want some sort of dress code ie no hair gel!

toilets should be inconvenient... people like to walk around to check whats happening

no live bands

dont try and please everyone with the music it gets all mixed up and the atmosphere goes.

you dont want loads of rig pigs...and be careful English men are more likely to fight than any other race.

tell the waiters that they may NOT act as messengers and bring over some pathetic tossers phone number written on a tissue.

Waiters are waiters -thats it.

I hate Palomas...its scary and sleazy

By tallg• 3 Sep 2008 16:45

The Pearl is stuck up, and the bouncer makes you feel like shyte, the music is pretty poor, and as Irishtinker said, it doesn't know what it wants to be.

By Irishtinker• 3 Sep 2008 16:39
Irishtinker

Atmosphere was ruined from the second you got there by the guy on the door.

I also think The Pearl didnt know whether it was a restaurant/bar/nightclub.

The clientele were good fun but it sometimes felt like 'look at me I have lots of money and I will stand around and look unimpressed'. Obviously I was on the dancefloor drunk and dancing like a twat!!

By tallg• 3 Sep 2008 16:34

Do you think a non-smoking club would have less patrons because of the smokers who wouldn't go, or more patrons because of the non-smokers who would go?

Olive - with the gender demographic as it is you're never going to get the balance of men and woman right.

By Stratty• 3 Sep 2008 16:27
Stratty

If I was a woman... hmmm... yes, I think bouncers would make me feel safe. Yep, thats it. What about girls only nights, so they get used to the place? What about a giant tele to watch the footy in the afternoon, you could open up early for me and Baldrick? We'd buy a lot of beer!

By Olive• 3 Sep 2008 16:26

I think the most important thing is the music.

Doha has Globals and Ministry which cater to the masses.

When The Pearl Lounge opened I thought brilliant a more intimate club but unfortunately it was all about trousers and shirts and not about the atmosphere. I remember going on a Tuesday evening and being asked for 200QAR to enter. My wife and friend went in and there was 1 person in there!

My wife is a DJ and we had a great time in the UK over the summer being able to dress funky casual and go out for a good dance.

Doha needs somewhere that will hold 2-300 people. On wknds it should be a bar/club, opening til late. For me I love vocal funky house. Stuff that makes people want to dance. Too many times in Doha the music doesnt suit the crowd. As the night goes on then the music can get harder moving on to electro etc.

During the wk it should be open as a bar with live dj playing live music possibly lounge/chilled or even have a full on night. I managed to club in the wk in the UK and still go to work the next day!

Well rant over. Here for 2 yrs now and there has been progress but not enough!

Good luck with your plans. Keep me posted!

Personally in Qatar, we ( wife and myself) luved Paloma’s. Didn’t like the fact that they cut of dance floor completely and have dj sam play right up on his “turntables”. Salsa bands is sizzling and plays good music

Bubbles is very nice when one needs to have a conversation. Used to like Orion when we had the “machas” playing.

Qatar needs the following in terms of nightclubs

Themed clubs (based on music) –

hip hop and R & B – hey Ryan & Co miss you guys from the base to teach everybody a thing or 2

House/trance/dance – ohh to have another MOS concert…

’80 music – some plain old ’80 stuff on the nights you just gotta chillax

lounge music/live music – you gotta have some good live music bands – I hate qube as a place so I don’t know anything about the band scene out here.

Very good ventilation – to smoke out the smoke. There is too much of smoke out here in the clubs – you feel like an ashtray at the end of every clubbing night.

If possible – no single guys on the floor, no cigarettes and drinks – I’ve seen this rule in quite a lot of clubs. I don’t have a issue with the guys but last weekend a bunch of dudes tried to mess around – it is good that I had my group else I’d be in trouble.

Drinks + Hornyness = Crazy dudes on the dance floor. If this goes outta control you’ll have only guys in the clubs.

Good sound quality – sound in the ridges – aussie bar is pathetic. Again stress needs to be made on the type of music to be played in order to determine the sound quality. More high for live music, more woofers (base) for hip/hop, trance.

Good lighting system – less strobs : Strobs cause headaches to customers so should be used to a min. Strobs are cheap though

Min 2 bar counters – to reduce the stress on one bar and keep customers happy. Preferably one on the other side of the club.

VIP area – overlooking the dance floor and for those very crowded nights.

I could go on and on but I wanna finish my work and getta outta this office. I’d like to set up a club out here. Did help out a client to set up one back home – although his budget was unlimited so we had the best of the best. Was fun.

tallg, actually the couple from Irish was quite professional, and they plaid great songs too..too bad they had left :(

Olive, you cannot please everybody anyway.. you have to think what kind of people do you want to attract to your bar.. would it be teenagers punks, so you have to choose appropriate music and ambience.. would it be people who likes wild dancing.. would it be senior stuff, who likes quite and elegant places, on high level with the corresponding music.. YOU have to decide what do YOU like, YOU have to fit this place.. otherwise people still wouldn’t go.. if your personality/style doesn’t match your place, it will be confusing, and hard for you as well..

I think it sucks. Here's why:

1. Too many cool Lebanese guys with slicked back hair and shirts open to their waists at the bar.

2. Too many of the same Lebanese guys admiring themselves in the mirror of the men's bathroom.

3. The service is crap and slow and they always get your order wrong.

4. Its too small.

5. You have to book 5 years ahead of when you want to attend.

is B52s in Ibiza. Its great inside and they have a roof deck too. No dress code either. That's what I call a real club.

Go easy on me labda. My wrist is still broken from last time and why are you using that picture of you humiliating me as your Facebook cover page? Huh?

you have nothing to contribute since you are such a good girl and never go out. The last three times I didn't see you was not in a bar, not at a party and I have never seen you post on QL.

it was on a weekday so it was not crowded. We were able to sit by the bar, had a chat with a nice old guy drinking along side of us and it was nice a nice chit chat.

I'd like that in a bar/night club wherein you could just sit, unwind and enjoy your drink, be able to talk with people around you...

The only downside is..the drink was expensive....

since you insist mjamille :)

I dont go to nightclubs, or parties. NEVER I never listen to music and I think people who go for movies are setting themselves up to be brainwashed by the wicked waste.

So I have nothing of substance to add to this thread.

Oh, and I also dont use computers.

Dress codes are ridiculous. They serve no purpose except for alienating people. Why wearing chinos is considered smarter than a nice pair of jeans I have no idea. Pearl is terrible. best clubs in London have no dress code.

What is the clearest benefit of living in the desert? The weather is predictable and dry. SO can someone please tell me why there is not a single place to go out where you can sit outside and drink (pokey pretentious bar on roof of millenium excepted)?

What this place needs is a barasti bar. It is in Dubai Meridien Mina Seyahi. Rocking beach bar, no dress code, outdoor areas, big sofas and chill out zones.

One last thing, please have ample bar service areas. Spending the entire night queueing at the bar at rydges and palomas just isn't worth the effort.

It depends who is in them. Now if I was opening a night club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for example, I would certainly ban shorts, mini skirts etc on account of the average weight of the clubber being in excess of 100kg andreally there would be sights I would rather not see. But here? No. Bring it on I say.

What if the dress code said no shorts, no t-shirts, no strappy tank tops and no mini skirts?

Dress codes just turn into greasy hair gel and bling contests. No dress code is best. In some cases, less is more yanni.

I am an old fart but I like good dance music. You know, a little Timberlake, Timberland,Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nape Dogg, Warren G etc.

Also, for a night club, I like good ambience but nothing too flashy or bling. I mean we already have Admirals and the Pearl for that.
