This is sick...... what sort of mentality do people have. He must have something seriously and physically wrong with his mind. No questions asked people like him should just be got rid of.

An independent review has been launched to find out how a rapist was allowed to father seven children with his two daughters and escape detection for more than 25 years.

The rapist cannot be identified for legal reasons

The 56-year-old was given 25 life sentences for repeatedly raping his children, who between them went through 19 pregnancies over a period spanning more than quarter of a century.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how the father's campaign started when the women were of primary school age. If they refused their father's advances they were badly beaten.

Both daughters were raped repeatedly during their ordeal. At the start they were attacked every day, whilst for long periods they would be raped two or three times a week.

If they refused their father's request they would be punched, kicked and sometimes held to the flames of a gas fire, burning their eyes and arms.

He would even rape his daughters while they were pregnant and they would have to take it in turns to babysit their children while the other was forced to have sex with him.

The court heard the defendant, who called himself the "gaffer" when at the family's home, took "pleasure" in fathering children by his daughters and would continue to rape them despite problems with their pregnancies.

Two of the eldest daughter's babies died the day they were born, the court heard. Between them his daughters suffered five miscarriages and five terminations and doctors advised them not to have any more children by the man they did not know then to be their father.

They often visited hospitals but despite this none of the doctors, nurses or social workers they saw, launched an investigation in to why they kept getting pregnant, the court heard.

Judge Alan Goldsack QC told the court: "As a result of this case questions will inevitably be asked about what professionals, social and medical workers, have been doing for the last 20 years."

James Baird, representing the defendant, launched a stinging attack on social services in both Sheffield and Lincolnshire, which was where the defendant fled with his family in the 1990s to avoid detection.

Mr Baird said: "It must be inconceivable to those who have listened to this case that these offences have been carried out, in this day and age in a so-called civilised society, over such a long time and with such consequences, without them being reported or investigated."

Outside court, Jayne Ludlum, director of Sheffield City Council's Children and Young People's Specialist Services, said: "Due to the seriousness of this case, an independent review has already been launched... to investigate what could have been done better and highlight any lessons to be learned."

"...The prime minister has said any necessary changes will be made to the system in the wake of the abuse by a father who raped his two daughters.

Gordon Brown said people were "outraged" by the "unspeakable" abuse perpetrated against the women.

His comments follow demands by MPs in Sheffield to know how the father's actions went undetected by agencies.

The 56-year-old Sheffield man was jailed for life after fathering nine children by his daughters.

An independent review is investigating the contact health professionals, police and social services had with the victims. During Prime Minister's Questions at the House of Commons, Gordon Brown said: "People will want to know how such abuse could go on for so long without the authorities and the wider public services discovering it and taking action..."

over the past couple of years, countless number of instances where they have ruined families and communities... I wonder what the stats are.

Why was mob justice banned, I think so it would work better than some of the systems in place

From The Times (of London)

"The women were at Sheffield Crown Court to hear a judge give him 25 life sentences for rape, with a minimum term of 19½ years. The man, who cannot be named to protect his victims’ identities, refused to attend."

the concern should be focused on the daughters and seven (?) children. How will they be counseled and cope-up with the present situation and how the government will protect them for further embarrassment?

Maybe it's because they live in a country, that has become such a health and safety paranoid nanny state, that is so 'politically correct', that the people have been brainwashed to stay in doors, mind their own business, and are too frightened to speak out or ask questions?

No, I read the mom left the father quite a while ago...

Nothing I saw stated the circumstances in which she left though.

So much of a nanny state and they couldn't break this one apart... These poor woman were utterly let down by the system and it is an obscene indictment of the local governmental system that nobody took the initiative to push for answers from what was apparently an easy question...
