Why delete ALL posts from banned members?

ummjake
By ummjake

I just watched the movie "Taken" on tv tonight, and remembered a thread from last year about the hoopla about the car license plates being from Qatar...so I went back to re-read the thread (good stuff guys -- Gypsy and Tall G were brilliant).

As I was going through it, it became apparent that the mods had deleted several pertinent posts written by a recently banned QLer (who shall remain nameless)...and it was like trying to read a novel that every fifteenth page was ripped out of.

Really...does it make sense to delete EVERY post a person has made when they ban someone from QL? It disrupts the many, many threads that that person commented on, making them all rather difficult to read and follow -- which messes up stuff for the rest of us.
Simply delete the posts that were offensive and leave the rest, mods.

"When I left, the inflation was very high and rents were ridiculously overpriced. Is that still the case?Yes, nothing gonna change here when it comes to living price

"I've also heard that Qatar is getting more like Saudi Arabia (where I worked before) and my wife is saying she can't live in that environment. We spent a few years in Saudi and she was miserable confining herself to compound life. What is the social and religious climate like in Qatar now?"

U didn't mention ur feelings, so i can't comment for the rest

PS: Since you are from UK, will Mr. Brown will follow his fellow sarkozi for banning hijab ???

You still haven't explained how your deep awareness on my whereabouts just dawned on you... so before you point fingers at someone, get your facts straight...

So before you ask me why I am so unwelcoming, you ought to check yourself a bit...

verisimilitude

So you were just endowed with this deep awareness of my whereabouts... you just read my username and comments in the past four hours and 'remembered' me?

I am sorry if your heart is bleeding for those who are banned... they got what they deserved... the only regret being that they didn't get it earlier...

4 hours... 7 minutes... old... and online at 1AM?

and stirring trouble already...

I have never claimed to posting by any other name, that fact was thrust in the open without my consent...

But rather appropriate your choice of name... a heroine of FRANCE and a Catholic priest... suits you very well...

If the revelation of personal information is what bothers you... Why don't you delete Mandi's comments about PM leaving the country... ?

Why do you delete MY comment about whatever had already transpired even before the National Day thread...

Why make a martyr out of someone who was dead long before the battle began???

Everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that people need to be held accountable for their actions

Even the mods should be held accountable

Part of the blame is on the moderators who indulged certain users in spite of their erratic behavior... and instead of reeling them in, you cut em loose and tried to hold back all the others who's toes were stepped on...

So the hypocrisy of it all was that its the oppressed who were being prosecuted...

And the spiral went on until the mad cows rammed in to the wrong crowd and then all hell broke loose...

Why did this happen? because they were given too much liberty to begin with... they were indulged instead of being reprimanded...

And its not like you were caught unawares, there were plenty of warnings... stalkers, CID, pestering trolls... even then you treated the symptoms instead of addressing the root cause of the problem

So instead of taking it out on users like me who saw this coming and gave YOU warning signals all along... you ought to reflect a bit on the quality and neutrality of your moderation...

Now that you are going professional and hiring, its worth giving a serious thought because there is much more at stake... its people's careers...

Mandilulur...what you wrote up there is quite disturbing...I though remember that within a couple of days on this site I happened to read a comment from one of old QLers that someone was hounded because of his/her posts to the extreme that he/she was forced to leave Qatar... and BTW its not only the QLers who may write something which can be considered as offensive get targeted but also the QLers who are seen as becoming popular (just a couple of days back read about this QLer who seems to be harrased for becoming popular by the posts)... I therefore never try to be active on QL as much as I would have liked to be...

Having said that, IMHO if one comments/posts appreciating the environment around and his own limitations to fight back it would go a long way in keeping things under control for oneself... ________________________________________

I don't make too deliberate an effort to hide my personal information on QL... not because I don't care, but mostly because I don't need to

I am willing to be held accountable to what I say in public and I believe I should be held accountable... I always tell myself that I should behave in QL the same way I would behave say for instance in a general conversation at a Majlis or a Doctor's waiting room in a clinic or hospital...

The anonymity of the internet should not encourage us to take liberties which are not acceptable in this society that we live in... and if we do take more liberties than what is appropraite, then we need to seriously reconsider how well we are adapting as expatriates...

Anyway, while on the topic of revealing personal information... I was not pleased that people were calling me by my real life first name as a means of intimidating me...

So much for ethics

Thank you Mandi. It is indeed a gross act. We will miss Sandeep. He was one of the finest members of QL.

By Mandilulur• 1 Jan 2010 18:15
Mandilulur

Mathboy, just that Sandeep's personal information was discovered and used by another QL member in a threatening and harassing way. He was very upset and unhappy with QL and the Mods and used obscenity to protest and get himself banned. I believe that "outing" QL members is a violation of our community and opens us all up to potential harm. We know there are a few real nuts out there and we do need to be careful. I would hope that some of us don't have to stop posting in order to feel safe, but I've thought about it. The consequences of being stalked or threatened are very troubling.

It's not exactly the way you put it.

X have posted the same on her own FB wall, that's when a group of her own students opened a discussion group to replay on the post. Only when some of YY students started an anti QL group, the story made a controversy.

When the story was posted in a famous local public forum 'Qatar shares', many locals were pro-X & and thought the context of her article was right

I think it's all started to fade away now.

her personal details such as name, work place and phone numbers being made public is nasty...

By Mandilulur• 1 Jan 2010 15:53
Mandilulur

It's actually a terrible story. PM's post on National Day was picked up and Blackberried to thousands of people WITH HER REAL NAME. Although I believe that the most derogatory remarks on that thread were actually made by some others, PM has been hounded and threatened and her life and workplace and phone number have appeared on various websites. She has apologized profusely and is in virtual hiding. The last I heard she may leave the country she has served for 10 years now. Sandeep's identity and phone number was discovered by a fellow QLer who harassed him with constant, middle-of-the-night phone calls. He went out in a blaze of obscenity, hoping the MODS would ban him, which they did. I believe this is a sad and somewhat frightening story for those of us on QL. There are some unpleasant individuals out there who on the basis of a few printed words are perfectly comfortable with attempting to destroy one's personal and private life. Be warned and be careful. I don't want to see this happening again. In fact, I'm surprised to see myself still posting here.

Ummjake is right. So many old threads have lost their meaning due to the deleted posts. Not only the posts of the banned members have gone the posts which were in response to those posts also are meaningless now. This is good for QL... with the current issue I expect...

1- Some people are fishing for the worst of QL.

2- It could escalate to either a Q-Tel based ban, or the public prosecution going after the owner(s) of QL... maybe even getting a list of IP addresses/phone lines used to access QL, and going after the users (It's not technically impossible, and most aren't using proxies full-time to access QL).

Cleaning-up Ql is a good thing.
