Will Power and Self-Discipline - do you have any?

jauntie
By jauntie

How many times have you told yourself:, "I wish I had will power and self discipline"? How many times have you started to do something, only to quit after a short while? We all have had experiences like these.

Sometimes, you wish to go for a walk, knowing how good it is for your health and how wonderful you feel afterwards, yet, you feel too lazy, and prefer to watch TV instead. You might be aware of the fact that you need to change your eating habits or stop smoking, yet, you don't have the inner power and persistence to change these habits.

Everyone possesses some addictions or habits they wish they could overcome, such as smoking, excessive eating, laziness, procrastination or lack of assertiveness. To overcome these habits or addictions, one needs to have will power and self discipline. They make a great difference in everyone's life, and bring inner strength, self mastery and decisiveness.

Does this sound familiar?

I have to admit I struggle with this one myself.
Self-discipline doesn't come easy!

you mean you like to do something unknown, not definited,so you feel passionful, excited, stimulating?

but what we do or should do in routine life and work is common, boring, repeating.

Your brain will be hardworking if you do not like to do common jobs.Somehoe you like to prefer to use your head than your hand, right?

You said "It is very important for one in oppression situation to make himself/herslef have a successful feeling surround her/him.Then she/he can go out from the bad feeling or mood."

I think I know what you mean. I ALWAYS feel wonderful after I do what I berate myself for NOT doing. For example, I get cross when I don't bother to do something, whether it's housework, go to visit someone, exercise etc, but I KNOW I feel really great once I do it.

I'm probably just a bit lazy. :D

I can understand you totally.I contacted a few friends on QLL,they all told me that you are a kind & nice lady with a rich mother-love. Also for me! So we all like to chat & company with you. On the opposite, we shloud know that you need care & help, too, spe. in spirit.

I as a Chinese lady,I know more the way in China. As you know we have very heavy training & practise on how to keep one having will power & self-discipline on a goal or plan.

The common manner is to repeat the same practise too many times.Do you know, the students in primary school do a paper homework 20 times sometimes. So we call this large repeating as self-discipline training. At angle of education science, repeating training does work for students, esp primary students as they are not form themselves will-ability. That is to say that they can get a good self-discipline from this special training. At this point,I think the eastern do better than the western. As far as know,I find the west do best in creativity as their/your education courses setting are very different from China, sometimes they are opposite. All the difference come from the goals of both sides'education. So education is reforming among all schools in today China.

As for your puzzle,I think you can adjust yourself in a normal or ideal way in your eyes.and I know the trouble does not come too often but sometimes.is it like that,Jauntie?

For drinking alchol or smoking,I don't have them.So how to adjust one in oppression situation? There are various answers from different people.Uauslly there are some manners ,eg.drinking, smoking, having sex, chatting,do hobbies,travelling....

For me, I like to chat with firends, esp.good friends.Or walking, cleaning or make love. I travel or visit my friends in another cities or contries if I have a long time leave.

It is very important for one in oppression situation to make himself/herslef have a successful feeling surround her/him.Then she/he can go out from the bad feeling or mood.

Pls. share them from my inside. Wish some do work for you.

Have a new day!

is the cousin of self-motivation.

I am hopeless at self-motivation. I NEED to be in a structured environment, like employment or school, because I need others to motivate me. Once motivated I'm off and running - just can't find the button to switch myself on :o(

I don't have the discipline to do it myself. I guess I'm just not 'leader' material.

Same with that smoking problem, froggie. I'm perfectly able to go without ciggies when I'm in a non-smoking environment - doesn't bother me at all, but take away the restriction and I smoke like a chimney! So I suppose THAT is lack of will-power because I'm obviously capable of giving up, just don't have the will to do so.

Put me in a Health Farm for a couple of weeks and I do all the things I enjoy like eating healthily, exercising, NOT smoking or drinking alcohol, BUT as soon as I get home I haven't the self-discipline to continue with that lifestyle.

Pathetic, aren't I ... :/ And, actually, I find it very depressing to be this way.

We have a simlar saying from the Bible, Galatians VI (King James Version): "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap", meaning "You reap what you sow."

You plant the seeds (sow), and then later you gather the resulting harvest (reap).

I have disciplined my self when it comes to my studies by the mere fact that should i not succeed (god forbid) i could safely say that i tried my best. Regular sleep/wake schedule, Regular Study schedule and of course regular play schedule (God know's that without it i would've gone mad. It took a long time for these habits to settle in but hopefully they will pay off in the end.

We need to commit time to doing the right things for ourselves, and only we can judge what’s right for us. We need to clearly know what we want, and we need to believe we can have it. Having goals in mind, we can avoid the trap of busyness and get right down to business. Efficiency is not nearly as important as effectiveness.

For fulfillment, we need to take our lives off autopilot. We need to consciously decide what we will and will not do, moment by moment. We need to give ourselves the space, support and freedom to be proactive in choosing how we live each day.

Remember to keep the balance - we deserve 'time out'.. This also falls under deciding what we will and will not do.

now I'm even more depressed.

You managed to give up your 3 a day habbit, reminds me of the last time I went to see my hygenist (daughter of my dentist).

She pulled up the charts and stuff on the screen and said: I see here you gave up smoking.

Pardon?

Dad says you told him you had given up smoking (3 months earlier)

Ah! I told him I'd given up smoking

And?

He asked when I'd given up - and I told him since 11 p.m. the night before.

Yep..yeehaw time is making my life miserable...almost fell face first into dinner last night at the restaurant and hubby had taken me to such a nice one...so went home (after wiping the hummus off my forehead) and went to bed at 8...then woke up at 2 am, bright eyed and ready to rock and roll! By Scarlett• 15 Oct 2007 05:39
Scarlett

I suffer from a lack of that...I LOVE exercise but it is getting into the routine that is a killer. Funny thing is, that once you start, it takes about 2 weeks for ANYTHING to become a habit, and once that happens, especially with exercise, it becomes addictive and you can't do without it. Unfortunately, you have to just about beat yourself into submission for those 2 weeks! I'm about to start that process..today in fact...no more excuses of jet lag and shoulder surgery! What I've discovered tho, is that I have to exercise early in the morning right after breakfast or its a lost cause because then I get busy with other things and I can "put it off" until later and then later becomes night time and I'm sleepy.

That's about my only weakness with procrastination..ohh no its not..packing is...I HATE to pack and will put it off until the very last minute..such as right before I left..I packed EVERYTHING at midnight when I had a 7 am flight... ;)

By Scarlett• 15 Oct 2007 05:34
Scarlett

I was like you in college...play or in my case, party, until the first exam, get a bad grade, study like a demon for one day then give up and party until right before the next one.

What I found is that you have to KNOW your limitations and deal with it from that perspective. If you can only study for 30 min, then do that much, get up, do something else, then go back and study another 30, just don't leave the house without having studied at least and hour and half, total (and yes, that does NOT include the time spent up doing other things!) what you will find is that in the long term, you will be able to study for more than 30 minutes at a time because you've trained yourself to. Might start with just a few minutes more, but hey..anything will be an improvement! Good luck, my friend!

I watched some science programme (meant for kids) on TV this evening. adrenalin has a lot to do with motivation.

Once the adrenalin kicks in (by fear or whatever does it for you) then you become more focused and physically stronger. But we can't all go on a Roller Coaster on a daily basis - oh! just realised ... that treadmill which inspires me is probably the same - it's getting ON it that's the problem.

Once I DO what I think I should do, THEN I'm in the frame of mind to tackle the world.

I'm usually in a good frame of mind, but I get into a BAD frame of mind when I don't get motivated! does that make sense?

By Hummers_rock• 15 Oct 2007 03:58
Hummers_rock

I find that if I'm in a good frame of mind, mentally fit, I feel motivated to do anything, whatever they may be.

It has all to do with what mental state your in! That's where motivation and self-discipline come from!

It's not that I didn't achieve my 'goals'. I never really had any! But I see others who have 'goals' and go for them.

What I wonder is why some of us aren't disciplined enough to go for goals.

What makes one person self-willed enough to HAVE a goal and GO for it? Whilst others just really arent bothered or sufficiently self-motivated to try, even though they may envy the winners in this life who do have that self-discipline.

Hi ram xx

Some of us were not born to be doctors, lawyers and teachers. Some of us are the benefit of others weakness. Is how much you put your heart into something you like, is beneficial for you and you succeed in doing so.

For example: Invested in real state a long time ago, bought and sold, stock's, put money in high interest CD accounts, bonds and minerals. I successful established an income for me, without working so hard. Of course the people I associated with are in the same mind and state. I help others, donated money and personnel time to others.

I Read a lot on finances, taxes and real state, but for the benefit for my self only goal to be financial independent. I had my up and downs, but eventually, did bounce off the dry docks. I'm solid because, I choose another way of making money. Did neglected a few things.

Is just because maybe you are not happy with yourself, should I said: Satisfied with your goals...

Unfortunately education is not the whole game for me. I got my degree a long time ago, I look at it like toilet paper, never work it..... I don't care about it. Is just a piece of paper with black letters. The reality is other.

Keep working out, maybe I'll drop by with my inflatable water ducky wrap around my waist teasing you....

A long list of things that i wished to do but i didn't ...

sometimes i start and quit after a while .. i dunno how to gain this will power inside of me .. The most things of my wish list is to quit smoking and be athletic .. but it seems that they will remain in the wish list and they never moves .. and the same thing goes to the rest of the list .. that's really too bad .. i thought that i'm the only one but thanks God i'm not alone ..

I really get a buzz out of doing exercise, whether playing a sport or swimming or just on a treadmill - it's just actually motivating myself to get up and go and DO it that's the problem. :(

Even though I know I will feel great afterwards!

It's a bit like some woman once said about sex: You don't feel like it, then you do it, and afterwards you're glad you did :D

But getting back to what I was really talking about ... In general, I think I lack the self-discipline and motivation which I so admire in others.

My motivation is my age group. I always put in my mind the marathon man running early on the morning and the sunrise on his back....
