Wireless Internet Blues
What happens when every bloke in your neighbourhood uses Wireless Internet..and almost all of them are unsecured networks??? You get a disconnect the moment the next one switches on...Are you fellas getting similar blues??
Techies..Help me..How can I ensure that my wireless is insulated from neighbourhood vibes???
Hi there
Has no one ask you if you want help yet, depends where your located I may be able to spend an hour and have a look.
Easy way is to set you router up with security and stop it broadcasting the SSID, this means no one can get oit unless they know the name of it and have the web key (64 or 128 bit) encryption.
mail me if you want and I can try and help.

And don't think of having a wireless network without securing it.
Well I had the same problem like yours...and all I had to do is to do some reading, and all I had to do is to find out if your wireless laptop or computer card support WPA , or WEP ....then the rest is easy, you go on the security of your ADSL router...and you set a password...so every computer need to access the internet has to get enter the password to enter the network...and htne you save it on all your computers at home...and let me see how the neighbour gonna get you again...
Well I'm living happy without any intruders now...
Cheers

Hey TG
forget all the comments. check your wireless router or access point for a setting that will filter the mac addresses that can connect to your adsl line.
Enter your mac address and set it to accept.
to know your mac address, type ipconfig /all
So, you can be relieved in the thought that only you can connect to your connection and the leechers can search for other available connections.
all other security methods like encryption will increase overhead and slow down the wireless connection. However, if you are a rocket scientist and have mission-critical information, use WEP or WPA2 encryption. however, setting it up is a pain in the (u know where)..
Change the channel you have your router set on. The default setting is 6 but you can change it to work on a different channel...This usually fixes my collision problems.
And securing your connection is always the best thing for wireless.
tg, this might not be as a result of people connecting. If your connection stops responding briefly then you get a message like "Wireless Network Connection Is Now Connected ... signal strength excellent (or very good etc)" then this is a problem with the wireless adapter.
If you are using a built-in adapter in a notebook update it from Intel.
This is especially true for Vaio notebooks.
ohh!lol! well, if u run into wifi probs again, there's this site http://www.wi-fitechnology.com, theyv got a forum there for such probs...hope u dont have to though.
thanks BS, just discovered you can set the priority of various wireless networks..Until yours is off it wont search another and wont disconnect...
this usually doesnt happen otherwise wireless connection would be a nightmare. i think u've to tinker with ur firewall settings.
I say then you are a lucky chap. save on your internet connection by leeching from others connection.
Haven't had this problem where I live, so can't help ya.
