Female bombers in day of bloodshed in Iraq
At least 28 people were killed and more than 90 wounded when three women blew themselves up in close succession in central Baghdad today amongst throngs of pilgrims flooding the capital for a major religious event.

A suicide bomber also targeted a political rally in the northern city of Kirkuk, leaving at least 16 people dead and 112 injured. Another four people were killed in a roadside bombing near the city of Baquba.

The carnage was among the worst in Iraq in months, with the Baghdad bombings also confirming fears that the pilgrimage to a Shia shrine in the north of the capital to mark the death of an eighth century saint would be hit by insurgents.

A woman’s head was found in the road, thought to have belonged to one of the bombers, a police source said. Arms, fingers, and other severed limbs of the victims also littered the streets, which were smeared in blood.

Female bombers have become the weapon of choice for al-Qaeda in recent months because they are less likely to be searched at checkpoints, which are typically guarded by men. The black Islamic robes often worn by women are also easy garments to conceal an explosives vest under without attracting attention. More than 20 female suicide bombings have been carried out this year.

A couple of hundred female guards were deployed across Baghdad to frisk women taking part in the pilgrimage, but the number appears insufficient given that up to one million people are expected to flock to the Khadamiya shrine for the festival, which climaxes tomorrow.

The triple bombings caused scenes of chaos that used to be a daily occurrence in the capital before a security crackdown by US and Iraqi forces, which has reduced overall violence to levels not seen in four years.

Ambulances rushed to ferry off the wounded and the dead, which included women and children. Police cars also helped to carry the victims because there were too many for the ambulances to manage.

The blasts occurred one after the other between about 7.45am and 8.10am local time, targeting prime locations in the central district of Karradah. Local people were seen clearing away the blood.

The attack followed a shooting yesterday of seven Shia pilgrims walking to Baghdad from the south. The ambush by unknown gunmen took place near to a Sunni town. No one has claimed responsibility for today's explosions but al-Qaeda has in the past targeted major Shia religious festivals and anniversaries.

The Kadhamiya pilgrimage was marred in 2005 by one of the worst losses of life in a single incident since the 2003 invasion. Up to 1,000 people died when rumours of a bomb attack triggered a stampede among pilgrims crossing a bridge leading to the shrine.

Despite the multiple bombings, tens of thousands of pilgrims today continued to flood through the streets heading for the revered shrine in the north of the capital.

Waving red, black or green flags, they passed through numerous police check-points. Tents also lined the route, offering people shelter from the scorching sun and refreshments.

Ahead of the event, thousands of extra security forces were deployed around the capital, while roads and bridges in the vicinity have been closed. A vehicle curfew is also in place.

Away from the Shia pilgrimage, the bombing in Kirkuk targeted people who were protesting a draft provincial elections law that is being debated in Parliament. The blast prompted a stampede as police shot in the air.

Kurdish objections over a proposed power-sharing formula on the provincial council in Kirkuk have blocked the law from being passed. Many Kurds consider oil-rich Kirkuk to be part of their historical land.

The city is home to Kurds, Turkomen, Arabs and smaller ethnic groups.

Sometimes good comes from bad?

I heard on the news that during the run up for this years' Shi'ia pilgrimage that there were over 50 women hired on as police to try to prevent this tragedy. Now they are supposed to be hiring more. Let's see if they get to stay on the force with equal pay.

I'll bet you, that there will be 50 virgin men waiting anxiously, ready to please those VIRGIN Bombers!

Another partisanship in the name of religion.

So much for loving your neighbor.

How should I spell it, is it Muslim or WASLEM BOMBERS?

it's not a common error, amnesia. It is done on purpose , and that's the mean thing about it. Why don't they write: Some women in local dress, or so?? They (The Times) want to create an enemy.
