Being stopped by a Qatari

razia1011
By razia1011

Hi QL Family is it strange for a Qatari to stop you and ask you for your phone number. I was so shocked I stuttered and just walked off. I thought this is not, well I won't say acceptable, but in the open and sooooooo loud!

So what qatari man asked tel number? They (qatari) have feelings too, you know.....))))) i dont understand why some girls are so angry about it. Be happy! Never mind who - it is a man who asked you!)))) does not mean you have to give it, but can't you come up with some nice answer?

Ask him for his sister's number so that you will give it to your Horny guy friend. IF he accepts and gives it to you, give him your number if he complains, tell him screw off you hypocrite

Thanks I really appreciate all QL friends comments, but

1. I was not dressed inappropriately

2.I was busy putting a sim card into a new phone I just bought and was walking out of the shop

3.My head was covered and yes my hair was exposed somewhat

4. I looked up wondering who he was talking too because it was so loud.

5. I understand the culture very well and know that even though it happens and is illegal i did not expect it to happen a day after I arrived.

6.Call it shell shocked call it what you like- I don't believe any woman wants to be treated in that way.

7. Agreeing with instructor786, in Bahrain and other places I have travelled to,men seeing this as well as women will defend either the female or she will do it herself.

So thank you very much for all the good wishes and opinions.:)

Hi Qatarisun I am not saying that a man has never asked. All I am saying is I was blown away by the way in which it was done and after the interview and the policy of behaviour that was explained to me just did not correlate. Other men have tried to make eye contact and smile of give me a napkin with a message on yeahhhhh I am not dead or boring, but bombastic, arrogant and so self absorbed just dont do it for me and no I have seriously not missed out on life,in fact I am a well travelled female and I am culturally aware.

If he curb crawled back in NZ he will not be crawling in his car any more....he wud b on the side of the curb face down....they assume most expat woman r prostitutes.

Yes u have a point however, like it was mentioned b4, let it b ur sister or ur brothers wife. The fact of the matter is some think they above the law and cause there r expats or none nationals they can treat them the way they want 2. That is not acceptable. I am sure asking a ladies number is not a crime however it is the way it is done and if it is appropriate.

Yes I have watch Qatari men follow local woman in malls and shops and they will not approach them the way Razia was approached....I actually find it hilarious watching the actions when they try and attract local woman.....hahahahaha....classic

QS - please read my comments properly - I actually agreed with you about asking for the phone number - the reaction was out of poportion. What I do not like is being treated like a common prostitute on the road side, that is my point and unforunately it has happened alot to me here and is very distatasteful

By qatarisun• 9 Jan 2012 15:46
qatarisun

come'on jjj75, no one is talking about curb crawling.. I don't understand, you gals really have never been asked for the phone number by any man??

stalking, chasing or moreover touching is one thing.. asking for the phone number is another. I don't think you can sue a man for asking your phone number. lol.. this sounds ridiculous.. just ignore him, unless you have nothing better to do in your life than focusing on all these little meaningless details..

and again, as I said it is cultural...you don't sue a person for eating his entire meal by his hands, even though it might offend someone as well.. just leave the scene, and forget about it..

Is asking for a phone number wrong ? No , but it depends on the situation and how its done.

Is molesting a stranger in public acceptable ? Never.

jjj75 - It is a criminal offense in Qatar as well... but they cant take any action if you are not gona complain .. or if authorities are not at the "Crime scene"

When we where at the fish market on the Cornish docks an older Qatari man touched my wife on her rear,, she thought at first it was just the people pushing as they do , then it happened a second time,, she yelled out at him on the top of her voice STOP TOUCHING ME to the guy,, he fled off fast.. i asked my wife what happened and she told me,,, dirty old man....

jjj75, I don't say you must have been wearing something revealing.. Approaching a woman is cultural matter, and it's not considered to be rude or disrespectful in any "warm" country. clothes is irrelevant. as a matter of fact, when I wear abaya, (I don't cover my head though, and I am blond), I get even more attention from local men. As I am familiar with such "cultural issue", I take it easy. So I am not sure why to make such big deal out of the fact that 1 man asked razia1011 for her phone number.. finally.. :)

By anonymous• 9 Jan 2012 14:22

Well it seems he was bored and you were too bachelor for him not to notice your aura! So he takes his chances by hitting on you!

Probably even wants to get in your pants O: I always turn those down >_<

qatarisun - you absolutely have a point, it is strange but in other countries not that unusual.

However, from my perspective, I have never had so many men (local and otherwise) approach me in such an inappropriate way - particularly curb crawling, which might not be a criminal offence here but certainly is where I come from. Just a load of dirty perves if you ask me.

And before you say I must have been wearing something revealing, I certainly was not and I remeber, the time I was approached pushing my son in his pram, it was winter and at night and I was all wrapped up in warm long sleeved clothes.

By qatarisun• 9 Jan 2012 13:48
qatarisun

now my turn to get shocked..

are you implying that during your entire life (and I am sorry, as per your profile you not 18 anymore) no one man ever asked you for the phone number?? wow.. looks like you have missed some significant part of being an attractive woman.. what a pity..

By jjj75• 9 Jan 2012 13:05
jjj75

Yup happened a few times to me - I remember just after I had given birth walking along with my son in his pram and a Qatari curb crawling me making kissy kissy noises and saying to get into his car- I pointed out he was a very slow memeber of his species and how would he feel if someone did this to his sister just after she had given birth.

sleazy!!!

razia1011, no need to apologize... it is not your fault that some don't have enough sensibility and/or social skills to mingle with strangers... especially if these are from the opposite sex, that's all!

Hi Faheem I was exiting a food store and minding my own business and no, I am not used to anyone shouting at me and truth be told. It is so like a man to always blame us women for their small egos. No one has the right to subject anyone to any form of abuse. I am sorry if you are offended, but NOT all women are seeking the attention of freaks and another point I would like to clarify is that...yes I am new and would like to meet friends and that does not make me any less of a lady than the next.

To each his own!
