Can the employer increase working hours without compensation?

My employer has suddenly decided to increase the number of working hours per week from 40 to 48. This increase will not be reflected in the salaries.

Our job contracts do not specify the number of working hours. Does this mean the employer is legally allowed to increase working hours at his own will, without compensating the employees accordingly?
