HELP! fresh graduate from canada

rougestar
By rougestar

Hi everyone!

I need a LITTLE help. I'm a fresh graduate from Canada and I got an entry level job offer in one of the biggest consulting firms. Can anyone please inform me about the starting salary for a Canadian female in Doha. Before I accept the offer I want to get an idea if my salary package is competitive with the rest of the market.

Thank you!

paid me 8500 Q.R. per month all inclusive. The timings were killing, even the daily commute was almost 2.5 hrs. But through some Wasta I got another job and presently I am taking 16K. I wouldnt call my salary great but it is enough for a single person like me to pay the bills.

The point is that you have to start somewhere. The biggest bull crap here and all over the world is experience. They dont give a rat's *** whether your experience is related to the work or not they just want experience on your resume. I know people who have worked on hydal power generation plant and here in Qatar they are working at a desalination plant.

I advise all fresh graduates today to accept whatever job they can get their hands on as long as it is relative to their field of study coz if you dont take it someone else will.

I have a friend who is from an African country who earns double what you think is a fabulous pay though he has some years of work experience. He was first offered peanuts but rejected the offer and later got a better offer elswhere.

What i'm sayin in essence is that you can get more if you're not in haste to land a job.

Westerners are needed here in Qatar more than ever.Don't be fooled by companies here thinking you're being offered a great opportunity.HELL NO!They need you more than you need them.

'A word is enough for the wise'so goes the old adage.

One last thing,it can be a very difficult life here for single ladies going by how some men in this country harass ladies physicall and verbally.I mean what i'm saying. My wife has been harassed twice by some a**holes,1st time by Nepalese drunkards on their Nepalese day last year and 2nd time by a Qatari man trailing her up to our home and asking 'how much'.She was really scared on this fateful day but thank God she made it home safely. When she told me,i told her next time to try note down the man's car number then i'll take it from there.

I rest my case.

Try to get (minimum):

QR 7500 Salary

QR 3500 Housing Allowance

QR 1200-1800 Car Allowance

If you don't have any monthly outgoings to cover back home (i.e. Students Loan) while you're in Qatar, you could pay for the car yourself (if they don't offer the allowance). But again, this is only if they offer you QR 7500 - therefore leaving you with QR 6000 (est.) in your pocket.

In the most part, I agree with Gypsy (although I can't comment on Canadian Entry Level Positions etc...). Since you are young and in the position to try it out - go for it!! I wouldn't expect to have a great 'career experience', but more of a 'life experience'. As long as you can negotiate a better package, what is there to lose? If you come here and enjoy the experience, great! If you arrive & hate it, go home! At the very least you'll be able to say 'I tried it'.

For what it's worth, I'm in my early 20's and left Scotland 9 months ago for my first experience of working abroad (in Qatar), and I'm glad I took the opportunity! All the Best! Get in contact to ask anything else!

P.S. I was in Toronto for 1 month in 2002 & had a great time! Terrific People!

Qatarisun and Drake I think it's been a long time since either of you were looking for entry level positions in Canada if you think they are that easy to find. Even in the T.O. or Alberta it's still hard to find entry level positions. Sure if you want to work front desk at a hotel or bar tend, you're in luck, but if you want a real job, good luck. (Believe my Qatarisun I looked all over Canada, I'm not a moron who thinks the center of the Universe is Toronto).

And I've been back to Canada since coming here and my work experience in Qatar is very highly regarded, I will have no problems finding work when I go back.

While I don't recomend Roguestar take this position, I would still recomend her looking in this region for entry level positions. She could do a lot worse.

it is perfect for you. or at least negotiate housing allowance..Try to reach at least QR7500 whole package, then it would worth it more or less... Otherwise you will spend at least half of your salary for your accommodation...

And I don't say "don't come here, stay there"... you are more than welcome here..but, not for the reason of "getting experience". As you have said, to “experience a different life style” – yes! Than it’s worth it!! I know a lot of guys who after graduation are travelling for few months – to feel and to smell a real life, to see different places and to experience different life style.. this is a great reason to leave torotno..but only for a little while...

It's a horrible offer, but it's up to you to consider it. You aren't taking advantage of the industry, the industry is taking advantage of you.

With that offer, even if housing is covered, it probably means that not only would you be sharing a flat with someone, you may be sharing a bedroom. Housing here is not the quality of back home.

Inflation in Qatar stands at about 13% in '07, much higher than in Canada.

Even after taxes, you can make more in Canada.

Under Qatar's labour law, you cannot switch companies here without a 'no objection' letter from your employer, which can be quite hard to obtain. So chances are your salary will go up marginally, while inflation goes up another 10%, and you can't leave to work somewhere else.

Unless they guarantee that they will triple your salary within a year of good service, it's not worth it. BTW companies are notorious here for making promises in an interview and not honoring their promises once the employee is here and working.

I am from toronto.

all you guys have good points but i do have to agree with gypsy... being a fresh graduate i lack experience however that doesn't mean i want to compromise by cleaning tables or being a bartender. I didn't spend years in university working my a** off to work at mcdonalds with my honours degree.

Even though Canada's economy is booming right now we must not ignore that inflation rate has gone up YET again and lets not even get started on taxes.

Considering that Middle east job market is sky rocketing i want to take advantage of this industry and experience a different life style.

what if i have housing covered? would it be a good offer to consider?

Gypsy, i guess, you know, that in Canada they require and consider CANADIAN experience when offer the job. So unfortunately when rougestar comes back to Canada (BTW, rougestar, which province are you from?), they will ask her for "Canadian experience", and even after 5 years working in Qatar (for QR 6500 only!!), in Canada she will have to start all over again.. like a “fresh graduated” “

By qatarisun• 3 Nov 2007 20:47

please, don't talk on behalf of whole canada. may be in your province and your town it's "nearly impossible to find entry level positions".. and we all know how you don't like Toronto ( again, on behalf of whole canada you call Toronto something like “canadian garbage bin” or so)... "HOWEVER"... the economy level in your province is much lower than in Ontario, and unemployment in your province is much higher... and “HOWEVERE”, in Toronto it's not a problem to find entry level position...It doens’t mean that I wouldn't recommend to rougestar to come to Qatar for work.. I just don’t think that it’s right when you are talking on behalf of whole country, which is huge and has different situation in different provinces. For instance, Alberta is booming right now due to oil production... they offer very attractive packages for those who are willing to relocate to this province...

If she has to leave where she is for a job that pays less than she can make back home, Qatar would be waaaaaaaay down the list on that place to go.

Gypsy, do you honestly think it's worth it for a western girl under 25 to come here just for the work experience? If they are offering her 6500QR, you can imagine what the accommodation would be like.

The honest truth in my opinion is this company has a stack of resumes a mile high of Indians and Asians to fill the position at that rate, but they figure it doesn't cost anything to send out the offer to the Canadian girl also and hope that she hasn't done her research and accepts it.

With the unemployment rate in Canada at a 33-yr low, I'm pretty sure she can find a job in her field.

And if she's hot, she can make a killing in the evenings waiting tables or bartending.

By Gypsy• 3 Nov 2007 20:19
Gypsy

Sure you can, the problem however is finding a job in your field. It's nearly impossible to find entry level positions in certain fields in Canada. I mean, what would benefit her more in the long run, coming and getting a couple of years experience here or working bar or waiting tables in Canada?

Even if housing is provided, it's still low.

Considering that you are a recent graduate, I assume your in your 20's, so back home if you have a roommate and pay $500 for rent the offer here is only $2200/month (if accommodation is included in the package). In my opinion, you can easily make more than this in Canada.

Apparently, McDonalds at Gasoline Alley outside of Red Deer Alberta pays 18$/hr + transportation to/from work because they can't find people. A lot of service industries in Alberta are open shortened hours because they can't find staff. Shouldn't have any problems making 15-20$/hr in Alberta these days no matter what you're doing.

I hope you're not an accountant because $8/hr full time is 320/wk. Unless you're a reeaally hard worker and insist on working a 125hr week:)

Have you tried telling them you won't come unless they provide housing?

no actually im pretty sure mcdonald pays you the bare minimum. ...the last time i checked it was $8.00. Wel.. according to my calculation at mcdonalds, considering if you work full-time, you can make $1000 per week including taxes

im going to continue my search..*sigh*

By Gypsy• 3 Nov 2007 19:58
Gypsy

You won't be able to live on that. If it included housing I would say go for it, because chances are in Canada you'd only get a job working at McDonalds as a fresh graduate. However, here you would be living on the street.

I guess a starting salary for an entry level Canadian would be around 20-25,000 QR including all allowance to make it worth it to come here to work.

Unless you want to know how it feels to live like your in a third world country, which is how you would have to live on 6,500QR per month.

By drake• 3 Nov 2007 19:49
drake

QR6500!!!

6500 / 3.8 CAD exchange rate = $1710 Canadian Dollars per month. You can make more than that at McDonalds in Canada.

If you even have to ask if this is a good offer for a Canadian I suggest you slow down and do some more research.

your salary in Qatar should be comparable with what you would earn in Canada. Check out your country's tax laws too.

Rents are crazy over here, they providing the accomodation ? u didn't mention any of that. It would way better for u if they did. Sorry don't know much more since I'm still a student.

u will not be able to live in a decent accommodation

then there is a question of car, entertainment etc etc but after all said there are many people living in comfort with far less salary but u being european with such high standard of living i think it will be difficult

If you can't change your fate, change your attitude.

you will spend for the accommodation at least QR3500, then the car at least QR 1200, then some basic stuff at least QR 1000, for some extra things at least QR 500.. so.. what did we get in total? AT LEAST QR 6200... if you think it's ok, come over here...

With everything included (basic salary + allowance + transportation) it comes to QR 6500. Is that a good offer for a single Canadian female?

Make sure your salary is not any less than 20000 QR ($6000).

Rent here is outrageous, if it is not provided in your contract the least they can do is to provide temp. stay for at least 3 mo.

Contact any friends or friends of friends, it's good to know someone in a foreign country. Watch youtube videos about Qatar. Traffic here is crazy. Construction is everywhere. Being away from family and friends is very hard. Good Luck!!
