HOTEL: QAR 3500 for Entry-Level Management Job???

By offbeat

Greetings from Puerto Rico!

I got a great job opportunity at a leading hotel chain in Doha. I would be an assistant outlet manager.

The compensation they have offered me is QAR 3500 / $960 a month based on a 48 hour work week. That is $5 per hour, and I know I will work more. Benefits are fine, includes accomodation.

I am totally shocked. As a trainee in the states I am making $2,200 net.

The bottom line is they are offering me local compensation standards. I am an expat however.

I currently live in a commonwealth territory of the united states, and to maintain a high quality of life here is much cheaper, especially coming from europe.

Anyway, anybody working in F&B in a similar capacity; please tell me what your compensation is.

Any information would be truly appreciated!

Good luck, offbeat, I like your attitude! Yes, it's low but you have to decide 1). is it better than where you are now and 2). will it enhance and further your career? They may ask you to sign a two-year contract. And do be aware that you won't be able to get a loan for a car or bring your wife (if you have or will have one) because it's dependent on base salary. But it's an adventure, isn't it?

thank you for the input!

I made them a counter offer and will accept whatever they offer. Hospitality just doesn't pay well in general; suppose ME is extreme tho.

I'm looking at it as an invesment in my career.

Finding a job in my field/experience-level with a market-leader is incredibly difficult at the momemt. ME is one of the very few regions that has economic growth.

My aim is to transfer out within a year.

Unfortunately most of the submitted answers seem to be from people not working in the hotel industry. QR 3500 is a standard salary for asst outlet manager. What you do need to do is enquire as to what bonus you will be renumerated with, this depends on the revenue generated usually over a 3 month period. There is also a service charge that some hotels pay in addition to your salary. And restaurants usually make a decent amount of tips. One must also remember that this salary is tax free, which is not applicable in the states and not only is accomodation provided for, but also electricity (in a city where we survive on 45 degree weather in summer... you need to have the airconditioning on all the time), gas and water. So essentially the QR 3500 is pocket money, you shouldn't have too many more expenses except the occasional meal (since meals are also provided in the hotel) and your phone bill (however even that is sometimes deducted by the hotel... since you will use it to call other colleagues for work related issues). Hotel salaries worldwide are low, but in the middle east you can be happy that the money you make is pocket money, since everything is provided for and it is tax free.

Thats a rip off they want to hire skilled labor for peanuts??life here is as expensive as Dubai..in my eyes thats not a good package at all regardless of benefits..please note that you cannot take a persoanl loan in Doha or get credit cards with a salary of 10000 riyals equiv 2739 USD..try and negotiate, and show that you have conducted research on the standards of living..unless you want to coem ehre and live a hand to mouth lifestyle and go back home with nothing coz you cannot save a dime with that salary.

Have you accepted the offer? You can always negotiate. Discuss with them that you are already earning almost 8,000+ qr (by conversion)in your place. Atleast they have to give you a competitive package. If they are offering you still 3,500qr for a managerial post as basic, think again. Not a wise decision.
