good day all, i am being offered approximately 17,500 QAR per month i have not got any final details yet with regards to allowances etc. in he interim if you all can comment on whether i should demand more money or if the offer is fair based on my personal details.
british national
design/highways engineer
7+ years experience
i going to be on my own if i take up the offer.

please bear in mind that the annual salary is between £10k-£12k extra than what i am currently earning in london. my aim to come to Qatar is to gain experience in my field and also save at least the equivalent of £1000 per month.
i think i have gone over board with the information but your responses will be greatly appreciated.

p.s. if i need to negotiate what are the key questions i should be asking.

cheers

either you are dreaming or someone is lying to you.

First question, how can you be in a consultancy firm if you have no experience?

Second question, will you trust your project on a zero-experienced consultant?

Third, what will a zero-experienced employee contribute to a consultancy?

Sometimes, mere logic will tell you if you are talking with sense.

ANYWAY, congratulations to those employees who's getting that fat check (Asians as you mentioned).

flor1212 - I don't know what consultancy you are basing your pay scales on. But, where I work at, and in the adjacent consultancies in my building, fresh engineering graduates (from asian countries) take home a gross pay of 9500 QR/- This is with ZERO experience.

and that offer? HAlf of that won't be earned by the other nationalities (the Asian expats as mentioned by somebody).

Why do you think the consultancy companies here hires OLD people? Number of years of experience counts a lot here, precisely they are on the front line! The young ones stay back.

So I would say, you are LUCKY. EArn more experience and who knows, you might double your take home pay that time!

XceptionalGreat said Suitable Package ...

Taking into consideration the info provided, your husband can expect a minimum package of 8000GBP per month, plus housing allowance (could be around 2000GBP per month) (if the company does not provide a Villa), plus family health insurance, plus family air ticket once in a year, plus 1 month paid vacation, plus Car allowance for a decent 4x4 (if the company does not provide a 4x4 Car), plus annual gratuity of not less than 3 weeks of Basic Pay, and possibly Children's Education for upto 2 Children.

In addition to above, the company should also pay one time relocation allowance, annual furniture allowance, etc.

You may consider Utilities & Fuel allowance included in the 8000GBP per month, as it does not cost much in Qatar.

You can start the negotiations with this package and slight addition/deletion should be okay.

Also, try to have as maximum as possible as "Basic Salary" out of 8000GBP per month, as the Basic Salary will be the basis of counting your annual gratuity upon end of services. Sometimes the companies allocate a very little amount as the "Basic Salary" and show the balance salary as different types of confirmed allowances, to save the gratuity.

Please keep in mind that Qatar needs hundreds of thousands of qualified & experienced professionals in the coming months, so if this Contracting Company does not offer you the desired package, you can still expect the same package or even the more from others soon. Keep an eye on the adverts and keep sending your CV to the HR Consultants.

Albeit the quality of life is better in UAE, but there is a job security in Qatar, and you will soon start loving it.

All the best !!

NEED I SAY MORE?????

You must be joking! 17.5K QR. is an engineers salary (design, consultancy, 5+ yrs) for an Asian expat (third country nationals as they call them here). You must be really down on your luck if you feel compelled to take up this offer as a European.

The reason why the pay here seems better than in the UK is because here everything cost more than the UK and the housing here cost 4 to 5 times more to rent than what what you would pay in the UK.

So don't get fooled by simply converting the salary offered here compared to the UK. In the UK the education and Medical is free, plus the employer contributes towards your NI and pensions.

The above basic salary seems fine and I hop its not all inclusive. You should at least expect return flights back to the UK and accommodation assistance, assistance with your Medical Insurance and if you have nay kids then help with the school fees.

If housing is not included then you will end up paying for the privilge for living here. You'll need to factor in regular trips out of Qatar due to the boredom.

you will easily save a grand a month on this salary but it sounds a bit low for the job you will be doing. If they give you a nice villa that is fully furnished, health/dental, memebership to a club and a good flight allowance they it's great especially considering what you would spend in london for the same. Been here for a while and its a great place to live
