Hello Everyone

I have been offered a job as a Project Manager in Qatar for QR 25,000(This includes basic salary plus other allowances) plus 2 bed-room semi furnished accommodation plus car plus round trip tickets(Family) per yr.

Please let me know if this is a good salary if someone is coming from north america.

Secondly, where is the contract signed? Is it done before joining or after joining the company in Qatar? It will be highly appreciated if someone could throw light on this topic.

Thanks a lot.

In my experience, contracts are ordinarily signed when you initially start work.

Qatar2, did you receive the PM?

It's normal for companies to have probation period, in my company it's 6 months. But the contract is usually signed as soon as you get here, at least that is my experience.

Hello Everyone, The company has given me an offer letter and it indicates that after completeion of 03 months probation period, a contract document will be signed b/w two parties.

In view of the above please let me know if this is a normal process in Qatar.

Thanks for all your help.

Your salary in Qatar should be around 30-50% higher than your USA gross because there will be lots of hidden expenses, such as buying new 220 voltage rated goods. You will pay tax on worldwide income at normal rates less any foreign tax credits that you have accrued working overseas in the past. In addition if you are out of the USA for 330 days/year you will will get the first $85,000 exempt of US taxes, but check with a tax specialist for other pitfalls particularly if you want to sell a US residence whilst away.

Expect to pay 30,000 QR for beachfront villa, or 14,000 QR per month for middle of the road villa on a compound. Quiz your prospective company what their allowance is worth. Also a car would be nice - 4 wheel drive recommended. Schooling for kids, and annual flights for the family should be included and sea freight and air freight for the family should be a must unless furniture is provided.

Agree all terms before coming to the country and insist on business class flights - it is a 13 hour flight from Washington. It is not unkown for the terms to change for the worse between leaving the home country and arriving overseas so square everything away before departing or quiting your US job.

Qatar2, you didn't mention what type of Project Management you'll be doing. If it is IT and you're just a project manager (as opposed to heading a department - no offense intended as I'm also just a BA) and you are getting housing and car on top of the QR25k, then it is not bad. This is provided you don't have kids or that they'll pay for your children's education.

Regarding the contract, you first sign an offer letter. You'll only sign the actual contract once you are here.

Wouldn't it depend on the type of project manager and his years of experience?

Qatar2 I think you have to look at the job spec and see if it will be a stepping stone in your career. I know alot of professionals in Qatar who before the full 10 years exp. earn around 22-28k QR. (western expats)

I took a job in Qatar early 2006. I was unable to find enough reliable information about the general situation in Qatar before we arrived, and I found myself (and my family) in a sticky situation. Cost of house rentals was going through the roof back then, the company would not recognise that their allowance was not enough and I had no choice but to pay the difference. Same story with purchase of 4X4. My department was controlled by the Indy Mafia, so forget about any professionalism, integrity or job satisfaction. I gave the job my best shot (and caused some serious waves on occasion!) but I was obviously wasting my time, there was no money to be made and we left after two years. Apart from anything else I could not take the bull anymore. Since then I've had some very good job offers in Qatar, but I am unable to take them because of the two year ban. So anyone thinking of taking a job in Qatar take note, do your research and agree terms in writing before you arrive. If you don't you are going to get conned.

Please be more realistic. People are making life changing decisions based on these responses.

You seem to come out with bull on other topics too.

Don't take their first offer! Negotiate! This is most likely less than they are actually willing to pay you. Bargain, bargain, bargain.

Also, if you have kids, try to get tuition paid, or if not, then bump up the salary to cover it.

americans, canadians, british will always get higher salaries & good benefits. QR25000 is less compared to other western expats here. maybe it depends if you are american citizen but an asian nationality, you know what i mean? i know somebody who is a canadian citizen but he is originally from somalia. they offered him less salary.

US CITIZENS STILL HAVE TO PAY THE TAXES . THEY PAY THE TAXES BACK IN US.

I WOULD SAY THAT 33$ AN HOUR, WHICH MEANS 25k A MONTH IN UR CASE. IS CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH.

it's good but try to negotiate for more ..

say 35k so if he want to make it lower u can reach upto 30k and that will be fine ..

but don't lose it .. cuz 25k is still good .. plus there is no taxes on income. u can make some saving here ..

I would say it's not very good for a project manager position, but if you are happy with it that's OK.

You should make absolutely sure exactly which allowances are included in the 25K, also if school fees are paid by the company and what type of accomodation is provided. As a PM you should rank a compound or stand alone villa.

Contracts are usually signed in Qatar, so make sure the contract terms are crystal clear before you get here.

I think good salary if they offer you flat , childeren education allowances and air ticket .

salary in Qatar depend on number of year experience and sector where you are working .

oil and gas field is the highiest salary ,and give same benefit as you offered , but if you are native canadien it should be more i think like 30000Qr to 40000Qr . other nationality like arab and asian get less

Regards
