Hello,

We have been offered the following package and wanted to know if this is suitable for living in Doha with a wife and three young children.

30,500 QAR Base (per month)
7,500 QAR Accomodation (per month)
1,000 QAR Transport Allowance (per month)
450 QAR Mobile Phone Allowance (per month)
500 QAR land line allowance (per year)
5 x base Car Loan?
Annual Business Class Airfares which can be cashed down.
40,000 QAR one of furniture allowance (one off)
75 percent of school fees for three children
International health insurance for whole family

We have never lived in the middle east before so would really be grateful of any feedback you may have.

Also any recommendations on accomodation eg in compounds or individual houses would be great!

Cheers

Collian, i had a quick look at your profile.

For family with 3 kids, you will need at least 3 bedroom villa. You need to pay QR 15.000 for independent villa not in the compound.

For good English School in Doha, the fees at the moment is QR 8600 a term, and it goes up min 10 percents YEARLY. American school will cost alot more than that.

Your wife will need to have her own car to ferrying the kids here and there. School run, playdates, after school activities. So you will have to calculate budget for 2 cars.

Dont forget asking the company for the medical coverage too. Private hospital here is expensive. Good hospital will charge you QR 300 at least just for consultancy.

PS: Make sure you find the school for the kids first before you uproot them, good schools in Doha always have long waiting lists.

Good luck.

In order to answer the question, I would suggest that you outline where you are from, so that someone might be able to relate to your expectations.

The rental looks low.

well, offer seems good..I dont know y people r asking u for negotiating more for house allowance...Do u wanna stay in a EMIRI PALACE or wat?? HRA is bit ok..Dear, contribute some part of ur salary as well for HOUSE RENT coz after all u r getting nearly QR 50000..Ur luck seems to be wonderful as no such company will pay more in this RECESSION period..I will rate ur offer 9 out of 10..Go for it man...Who knows, if u will negotiate more, u may loose even this...SO GO GRAB IT!!!!!

from the salary structure, the offer seem to be from a telecom company. If thats the case, the grade should be decent as you have business class eligibility. However package for the grade seem to be at mid level without any extra allowances. You may negotiate hike on base package.

As you like my friend.....But I am pretty sure it is a Government Agency......But if you are still negotiating, best of luck, again.

Its not the PWA (which I assume is the public works authority).

I of course won't detail what the company's name is publically as its still a negotiation! :)

Want to trade with mine ? I got 15k for the accomodation but everything else far less than what they offered you and I hold a US passport !

I will take the offer in heart beat !

I am now wondering about this % deal for fees. I was under impression it is always 100% of school fees.

Even if they are paying low accommodation allowance the offer is very good at the present situation.

Most of the companies have salary scheme.

Just try to bargain a bit with the Housing Allowance or better yet Company Housing Allowance plus the Educational Allowance for your kids.

You would add up a little bit in the transportation allowance too as appropriate car for you with a family of five (5) ranges from QR1,500 to 2,000 per month car loan. This is SUV type of cars.

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK!!

CHEERS..

The base salary is good however, can you explain the car allowance bit?

As mentioned by others, do try and get the school fees 100% paid, if possible. In addition, try and ask for the following related to the school issue-:

1. Payment of the one off annual capital charge (some schools have this one off payment on top of fees)

2. The refundable deposit for registration (some schools have this set at qrs.10,000/- per child.

(check out the school websites to get a better idea of the fees etc...)

In addition, the housing allowance is on the low side.If you are hoping to secure a villa, it will not be possible on that budget without putting money towards the rent... Advise them that based on the current market rates, you request that they review the same (your allowance) against the current market conditions.

In addition, if you are taking the offer, start looking for school placement as that is the tough part.

Hi Collian,

The package is good, BUT the accomodation money are not.

With this money you'll rent a one or two badroom flat in a not very good area. A good appartment/villa for your family will cost not less that 16-18 000 QR atleast. Better ask your company to provide famili accomodation. Be aware that the cost of living here is quit high. Does you company provide money for scholing? Also very important. Most of the above advices are given I think from people who are earning little money.

Regards

The accommodation allowance seems a bit low for a family. You should expect nearly twice that amount for a family of five.

A good offer but do your calculations on school fees as the better schools tend to be quite expensive even if you are only paying 25%

I've found that living in a small compound is good for kids as they can play outside in safety. There is usually a security guard patrolling the compound and no speeding cars to worry about.
