Salary in the hotel industry?

Good day!

First of all, I’d like to apologize in advance if I am repeating any current thread! I did not find any relevant enough and I have difficulties finding sample salaries at Qatar for 2012.

I am considering to start work as a host at a five-star-hotel in Doha. I will not mention the name. I have experience on a similar position (in my home country which is in EU and in the USA), I have recommendation letters which can be checked for eligibility any time. My overall experience is about two years. The offer is – all included (except for a car, that reading here, probably I should consider) a two-year-contract with a wage of about QR 1800/month. Food is provided, however one can never be sure what exactly the meals for workers contain before going there. Working in a hotel though most likely means that it will be good enough. Housing is also provided. Everyone who has worked in the hotel industry is aware that tips are seasonal, so should I try bargaining for more? Probably I will do it in a written form, since there is an agency serving as the mid-link. How much more is reasonable? The sum of 1800 (minus tips) is not a problem in my own country as well, if one has some experience. They would not be hiring in Eastern Europe if they did not want less paid workers, I know this. Still.

Otherwise, relocation is not a problem for me. I am not a perfect stranger to the culture and I’d love to come! However, I am interested in a permanent position, most likely I will not use my vacation for the first year. Occasionally I will just send money back home to my grandparents and that’s all. I am not coming back until 2015, so I need to know that it’s worth it.

Thank you for your time and I’d appreciate any advice! If you have the time and the will, you can also share what the average wages are for other hotel positions, as well.

Tipping is virtually non-existent here in Doha. If there is a service charge, it is retained by management.

Thank you guys and I apologize for the late reply!

I still haven’t signed anything, there will be a presentation tomorrow with some extra short interview to follow and then the ‘sign here, here and there’ moment comes. I will not sign for less than double in such a case.

It is true that I have some educational background and experience but getting a job here is still very difficult. I mean in Bulgaria. However, if I am to leave for two years, it should be for at least 30% more money I can get here using my head rather than my hands. The problem is that time is running out for me and I am in such a position that I seem to be overqualified for a lot of jobs (driver, salesperson, etc) and inexperienced for better ones, since I have mainly worked at the hotel industry to date. A paradox, yet I have bills to pay, etc. Excuse me for going a bit sideways/offtopic.

The abovementioned was for Hayatt Hotel, which should be far from a fast food or a kiosk. The agency is Trenkwalder – they publish dozens of ads at a job panel in my country. I have applied for this one two weeks ago. Although very polite, their representative has not read my CV. He did not even know what position/interview I was there for. There weren’t any other questions, except for the general ones and it was more of a presentation. He tried to convince me that tipping is so great, that wages are more of a formality. As well as, that ‘’a three-month-notification’ is a standard clause for contracts there. However, tips are always seasonal, nevertheless the climate. And I do not sign a contract thinking how to break/end it. If I sign, I will stay until the end date unless an emergency. There is an early morning interview tomorrow. I will not print this thread, but I might mention the forum.:) Also I will try to ground myself within a page and attach it to my CV and recommendation file to hand in tomorrow. I will demand QR 3500/month - there is no problem of testing my skills to communicate with guests and serve tables any time, my recommendations are authentic.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help!

Are you still living in Bulgaria or are you living in the US?

If you work back to what the amount would be in your currency of choice, then you will know whether or not its worth it.

QR1,800 is a little less than US$600 or EUR400. Is this what you'd be earning in Europe or the US.

Tipping is not a widely known phenomenom in this country. Most places charge a service fee, but if the staff see any of it, its a miracle as usually the estabishment hold on to it. However, since its a 5* hotel that might be different.

If thats the salary offered in 2015, then I would suggest you don't take it. Standard of living is going up all the time. Taxis are between 15 - 60QR, depending on where you want to go. Movies are QR35 a time with a Popcorn and Coke working out about QR20. Alcohol is extremely expensive, even with your staff discount.

I would suggest you think long and hard about this move.

That is the fact, most of the hotels is giving that range of salary and I know some people left their job from the hotel and decided to go home instead of working hard and spend a long working hours with low salary.

It seems your really educated with your statement, why dont you try some hotels around and find your luck, or might even consider to change industry.

best of luck.

Salary in the hotel industry is really low. If you are not the outgoing type maybe it will work for you.

This is the salary range for the said designtion. People think that the people working in 5* hotels take more salary. But in actual, only the managers get high salary. I think you should think about moving ahead in your career. Since you have mentioned that you belong to EU, you have better options in EU countries itself. I don't find any reason for you to come to ME.

I don't go to the QP buffet everyday or else I would be not be able to fit in my trousers anymore.. As it is, being 8 years in QP made me jump up two dress sizes which I am now frantically working on as I want to be size 8 again.

I don't know why but had a few friends who were in this industry, but most of them have left. I know someone who is a Floor Manager in a 5-star hotel but earns less than 6K (all inclusive). You seem to be educated (your writing says a lot) why not try out in some industry where your qualifications will have a use for. Work can easily be learned except the one's which requires you to be licensed or highly specialized. You see, when you take that offer and realized to your dismay that what you got barely afford you to survive, you can't simply say I quit and I'll look for another job. No sir! My take: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Kareena, I am doubting the role of the middle link in this offer otherwise it is not possible for a 5-star hotel to offer such a low salary.

1800 Qrs. is not acceptable at all. It is probably a fast food joint or a cheap roadside restaurant because a five star hotel would not pay less than 5000 riyals to their service staff.
