Sales Position ???????? Help!!!

Ryan from Texas
By Ryan from Texas

OK, I'm from the United States (with a college degree in Sociology). Standard of living where I am from is High! Yes the market is complete crap right now, with lay-offs left and right. But, I'm all about comfort. At the end of the day I wouldn't mind working at Starbucks vs. Working just to get by in a Middle Eastern country. That being said, I have no problem moving out here if it is a worthwhile opportunity.

So, this is the offer on the table. Good? Bad? or just plain Ugly? You tell me!

Sales Position for a Construction Materials company. I would be in charge of everything. From the business plan, to the implementation of that plan. Also, would be in charge of establishing my company in the Qatar market.

10k a month Salary
12k a month Housing
Car/gas provided
Medical Provided
Phone Provided

Commission- 3% of total sales (gross)
Possible shareholder in the satellite office.

So Potentially, This could be very appealing with the commission rate, for it is not absurd to presume that we could acquire a million plus in the market. That alone would be 30k a month.

But the reality, it may be 6 months before we even get a niche in the market. So my base is what concerns me... Please advise!

I am "in" for capitalism but a Capitalism with a soul. Look at what happened to a very capitalistic U.S.?

Working for someone, for anyone... i would always consider being ethical. Unethical companies? They are responsible for themselves while I am trying to be responsible for my own morality and innermost persona.

No company ever wanted to lay-off any good employees but if the inevitable comes, there could be no choice and i do believe that the last to go are the treasured ones.

Be it and all the best.

Welcome to Doha!

Cheers to that!

I may be wrong, but i dont think you get offered anything at all if you werent a strong performer/ worker... The cost to a company is a hefty amount to bring someone over from a different country (or at least a western country)...

and yes i was being humorous... but on a side note... if you think working hard for any company and treating it as your own will save you from when lay-offs come... im sorry to say, but you may be a little naive. I'm not trying/wanting to stir you up, but at the end of the day its just business, so you always have to look out for number one...

Its called capitalism:) go read Ayn Rand if you get a chance... it will change your life! (for the better of course)

Thanks for the feedback

that it was just some sort of humour. Not a question of being serious but work etiquette i should say. Old folks say.. what comes in from the mouth comes from the veins.

With a Sociology background , you are jumping into Construciton Material , Building Mateials.

The guy who offered the job, will look at the market and the revenue for 6 months, and later wind up the company

I am not discouraging you. But advise you to be cautious.

You take salary - for 9 months or 12 months..

then say bye - if the employer wish.

This has hppened in this coountry... Much bigger "professional" banks bring people from US / UK and tell them Bye.. ( they take the full 6-months salary as per contract, in case of termination ) and go back to the homecountry... ( with a mischevious smile )

if you come, dont start living in posh style with BMW or 4-wheelers or swimming pool villa... Try to save your salary and say bye ..... with a hefty pocket !!!!

I honestly believe Ryan was being humorous---a little tounge in cheek and the comment was not to be taken literally.

See, Ryan, people don't get our kind of humor around these parts. People are so serious all the time. ;)

Sucking every penny out of the company? Who's company penny you mean to suck out? I hope this do not mean being not emphatic towards the company you are working for because i believe in treating the company you are working for as your own. You may not be rewarded outwardly or directly, the company may not see this in you or may overlook this because your bosses maybe busy looking out far but there is always that halo in you that attracts blessing from wherever it may come from.

We may not share the same sentiment in life towards working etiquettes but let me just share this to you, ya? Work not just for your own advancement but for the company too. Treat your company as your own and you willbe treated the same. I may sound laid back but i do believe selfless efforts pay off. You may be surprise one day how but it does.

That's the word here too but, isn't there more construction in Dubai? It is all relative. In other words, since there was more construction there, obviously there would be more lay-offs.

Maybe you just need to come to Doha to see for yourself...hopefully you will get some straight forward answers and make a good decision based on those.

Good luck dude!

Ive been in Dubai for the past 2 months on a trial basis. And everything here indicates Qatar and Abu Dhabi are the places where things are "still going strong".

But I'm not there. I'm scheduled to go there for a month to determine the marketplace.

As for that "magic tent"... are things as bad there as in Dubai? ther are so many conflicting stories, and its hard to get a grasp from a distance.

Thanks for the help thus far.

What is the expected annual sales ??? you have to consider this since the commission is part of the income.

Sales jobs are risky, and the construction sector has peaked and will begin a decline.

And regardless of what your company sells, people in the construction industry will only buy from the companies that their sponsor tells them too (normally a cousin).

The deal looks okay on paper, but I think it's too uncertain.

You've managed to combine the 2 most uncertain sectors in the Qatari economy.

It is hard to advise anyone because there are conflicting stories about the economy here. Some say that construction is slowing down and some projects may just be halted altogether. In other words, the media wants everyone to believe that all is good here. Common sense would tell you otherwise. There is not a magical tent around Qatar to shield the country from the economic slow down affecting the rest of the world.

This being said, do your homework before taking a leap. Things are different here and only you can tell if you can live without certain things of which you are accustomed.

You are giving yourself/company 6 months before "getting a niche in the market"---it might take longer if you consider the state of economy these days.

you are single and no pending heavy family responsibility at home where a monthly remiitance is a must.

Global business is in peril, so the newspaper said 2 days ago especially on the sales and marketing sector. this sector is the first to go in the Middle East, the first hit by redundancy due to the huge in volume of workforce in the past. So be careful too on your options.

Life is good in the Middle East workwise but be careful with the sector you would be in.

Just a thought of course. You maybe is wiser than me analysing the market.

All the best!
