Alcohol in Doha

Tyler
By Tyler

As many of us have commented on our increased levels of drinking and the absurdity of banning alchol in the counrty I feel we should discuss why we drink.

Personally it is due to the mind numbing boredom of sitting in an office all day with little to do while collecting my paycheck.  Upon getting home there is nothing to do and with the lack of social activities in Doha I resort to drinking to create some excitement as you can only talk to ex pat guys for so long before it is quite a bore.  The ladies complain about nothging to do and the guys as well, yet you never seem to find the ladies out and about therefore preventing us from engaging them in a lively chat or at least allowing our eyes a break from the ugliness of ourselves.

Oh forgot the long drawn out explantion.....BOREDOM

This bloody city is going to drive us all mad I am sure.

that working offshore Doha was the 2nd most boring place on earth. So the follow up question was always what is the most boring place on earth? Reply - Onshore Doha!!!

Luckily alcohol was legalised here and some of the boredom slips away in the haze...

Invite friends round for a drink, get some snacks in. They will return the invitation and the group will grow.

Life was much better before all the bars opened.

Having the permit means plenty to drink in the house, only at some point you must find others to consume with you else you become an alcoholic. Drinking alone is one symptom.

I have lots of wine and beer and will share, just won't drink alone if it can be helped

Hmmm- which personality is coming out today?

I don't know what you would have done when there was only one "private" bar in Qatar. We had booze permits and most entertaining was done in the home. I'm sure it was better than meeting in so called "bars" that are devoid of any atmosphere.

Perhaps we should follow the example of many fine statesmen and always have a flask at hand for a quick nip.

Work might actually be interesting when slightly intoxicated.

It is a work day so perhaps he is off making a living....we all work so hard in Doha that this board is most entertaining during work hours.

And I wasn't referring to the third ear just the grotesquely shaped nose on the malformed head..... Didn't even notice the third ear due to those other items.

Liana, there must be an awful lot of gorgeous women here, judging by all the posts from other women of differing nationalities stating exactly the same thing

Or maybe you dont get harassed because of the complete opposite??

And im not hijacking this string any further.

No wonder your wife has so many troubles with men here. She must be gorgeous.

Because clearly you think that looks are the only reason anyone should consider dating anyone else.

For me I like intelligent conversation, but this obviously doesn't interest you. Each to their own!

Liana,

One thing I have learned is that you should never throw stones in glass houses.

If you cannot take a joke then dont try and make one, as for my wife well yep she is gorgeous to me also highly inteligent and a great conversationalist.

But hey thats my business.

I have been in Doha since September and not one drop has passed my lips. I am not much of a drinker but I am starting to crave a long vodka. Roll on the alcohol permit, just in time for xmas.

No alcohol makes me sad.

Tyler - Why do we drink?.. Nah. 'What to drink' would be a better topic for discussion.

Here's my mix for a cold rainy Doha night.

2.0 oz of dark rum (pref. Old Monk)

0.5 oz Tia Maria

Top up with diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke (available at Megamart) in a highball glass, with ice.

Cheers!

I prefer to not put any more effort into a drink than opening the bottle, occasionally pouring it into a glass but either single shots or a pint does me well. In fact Mr. Anheiser and Mr. Busch are keeping me company tonight.

Life on Earth is not heaven. Many complain about boredom, traffic, treatment of others, etc.

We could try changing our routine. We could try drinking cocktail juices. I tried a juice that has honey, mango, etc. You coul try drinking Eastern drinks like mint tea, ginger in steamed milk,

Doctor, Please. Why are you wasting your time with your mental BAC analyzer? That woman officer is always lurking in the streets and public locations of QL.

Doctor, I'm a human being.

There is nothing wrong with me. I'm sober today, I could walk the straight line, I don't know about tomorrow but today I'm sober.

Doctor, Once in a while I need my antidepressant medicine in the form of distilled Spirits.

What did you said: Antidepressant pills? Are you out of your mind? No, Doctor is my slang for alcoholic beverages.

Doctor you have a gorgeous, cold and sober day.

i never use to drink weekdays before i came out here, and hardly ever at weekends either, now i find myself drinking every night- not getting drunk though, just drinking maybe one or two. never use to though. But where else can you get your kicks out here i hate going out in the evenings as it takes too long to get anywhere in the traffic ( and i dont finish work till late) so you just sit at home tv on drink in lap! But i figured that its when i need a drink in the morning before work i want to worry!! I find quite a few expats boring anyway all they do it talk about money, cars, jelwery, golf etc drives my brain ( please no offence here i put few- just the ones i have met... you know the i brought so and so crowd yuk!)so lets all carry on merrily drinking too much....all raise your glasses to Doha!

Not all expats are married, however the Garveys and Rugby Club crowds seem to be. And those guys are married but haven't been with their wives in years. Makes you wonder why they are married at all.

Tyler,

I thought I was the only one with this problem (not quite a problem as I never miss my mouth with my drink), working in a purely expat company I discovered that everyone seems to drink to much and this is on a daily basis. In the UK I would only ever really drink on a weekend.

So what do you call excessive then???

And hey come on the TV here you need to drink to actually find it amusing!
