All eyes on me…
I think I will never get used to it… Staring…Everyone is staring like they have never seen a woman…No, not everyone but majority, you know who I am talking about and no, not Qatari. They are pretty polite in this regard. It's really scary sometimes, reminds me of a “resident evil” movie as if everyone wants to eat you. I am afraid to look around because if I do - I find at least three-four of them staring and they do not even bother to take their eyes off me when I look at them. This is so strange and really really scary…
I am thinking I should get an abaya...
Coming soon... Smoke Security Agency..we provide you protection 25 hours a day 8 days a week.
Just happened to read this story last night. Quite an opposite... a woman stalking a man and guess she is well educated (didn't do the background check) and the guy lives in some real decent place.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1378125/Rio-Ferdinands-stalker-guilty-Susanne-Ibru-grills-England-star-court.html
What I intend to say is staring/ stalking etc etc isnt something specific to Qatar (or say GCC) as has been mostly concluded ...it can happen anywhere and by anyone irrespective of nationality or the individual's standing in the society... and may be, just may be the degree of intensity may differ or the offended individuals do not notice it elsewhere but get thin skinned while in this part of the world.
Anyways, without being seen as someone condoning or not accepting that this happens here or since it happens elsewhere it should be OK here, just would like to say... take care of yourself you good ladies out there and stay safe...:)
I will tell a lil bit of my experience: staring at you is not a big problem yet. They might follow you. Someone used to come near to the store I used to work at and standing for hours, following me I end up complaining to the Security. Sometimes they follow you when you drive, they might put an eye right on the parking spot. I got physically attacked by a teen in the elevator, I had a big complain to a landlord and eventually to the police station. I mean, this country is still safe comparing to others, but you have always know how to deal with it and avoid the situations you dont wanna be at. For your safety, try to be at the decent areas.
And I guess you are new in Doha, my advice --- ignore, coz u wont be able to change it. Eventually you'll get used to this sometime soon and wont even notice that.
If you get an abaya you will be chased by Qatari men and they will whisper you phone numbers :D But you right in a way, they actually have more respect to females then any others. Im talking about in waiting lines, not arguing back to a lady even he is not right, or giving a way on the roads, answering with pleasure if you need any info and its very good of locals.
[It takes 10 muscles to make a fake smile,100 to frown, and 4 to punch you.
I will choose the easy way with you. Regards, Mod!]
nobody mentioned here treating women like flesh or lamps, you created some pictures and start to comment on it.
nomerci
don't get too emotional
hey guys, sorry that couldn't participate in the discussion earlier but so happy to see such a great response rate over here! I was actually busy following your advice and walking in a street enjoying the attention)))
thanks a lot to those who DO understand the issue and sincerely gave me good suggestions and support. Thanks also to those who have just proved the imperfection of human kind. these are probably just the people who have nothing to do in the office and try to make fun of new comers seeking some support. I am not surprised by the rudeness of some of the participants, it doesn't say anything but the level of your culture and intelligence.
Anyway, I will try abaya one day just to understand how it feels.
and, yes, great that my post have initiated some business ideas as well. I like it! do organize the course, but teach the concept of "social attention" - it will be much more useful here.
wen in rome do as the romans do....
Big, fat NO ridaa.
WE, women, should not need to make ourselves unconspicious...not visible because some men can't behave.
MEN should, and many do, have the manners and courtesy to respect women no matter what they wear.
Women are PEOPLE not lumps of flesh there to please or not "arouse lustful stares".men...we have rights and responsibilities...and it is NOT our responsibility to humour or thwart disrespect. This is something every decent human being, in this case men, should have . respect for women is taught while growing up, as is respect for human beings in general.
I am sorry if my words are strong, but I have to admit that I do feel strongly about this...and all this stuff about women having to cover themselves not to tempt men makes me a bit irate.
What a woman wears should not make a difference as to how she is treated by men.....even if a man were to go to a strip bar, that does not mean he can be out of line when it comes to girls there..
As a matter of fact, I have seen a sign on a few bars in Thailand where a certain nationality was denied entry permanently...apparently they thought they could mistreat the girls....thing is, there are ALWAYS rules to be followed, no matter what.
Evn if a woman is a prostitute, she is still a hman being and needs to be treated with respect.
Of course, that apparently is lost on some.
of all the possessions in the world women are the most alluring to men
no man with a healthy mind and body or even without one (old men) can ever ignore a women
whether she is beautiful or not doesnot really matter
but the intensity and the no. of stares increases depending upon the attractiveness , dressing and body language
even women who tend to wear abaya for namesake tend to get stares especially ones with tight fitting and much elaborate designs
also eyes play an important role in the stare game
if a women stares back it will invite more intensified stares
thats body language
anyway an abaya will help to reduce these stares significantly , but choose a loosefitting , unattractive , sobre one
of course u cant change men ; they will stare till doomsday
this is if these stares r lustful ones
otherwise as one shot says it has to be something really strange or absurd
either way as nomerci suggests it is unwelcome a disrespectful
anyway only we our self can improve the situation by becoming as inconspicuous as possible
one shot, you know, IMHO, you can't really compare that.
Women here get stared at ,in a very pertinent way, BECAUSE they are women, no matter what they wear. It would be different if they were wearing something unusual, but they don;t!
It is nothing more than bad manners and disrespect.
And that I really can't accepet. I can try to ignore it...but my opinion of those who do it is less than favourable.
And that has nothing to do with who or what those people are...everybody is able, if they want to, to behave respectfully.
nomerci
i didn't mean in my words klara and criticize her clothes ..no
and yes like you said she is new here.
and i compare her situation to Scottish men with skirts in the middle east or abaya women in some countries of the west.
oneshot, she is new in this environment. We all tried the abaya in the beginning.
oneshot, that does not happen a lot in places where women mostly wear Western clothing.
Most of the time a woman wearing what you describe will get lightly disapproving or looks that make a little fun of her.
But mostly it will be ignored.
and yes, manners maketh the man. Very true.
also may i add there is a time and place for evrything i meen u wouldnt walk into a job interveiw with stripper heals on boobs out and a face full of makeup (unless u wanna b a stripper) and you wouldent walk into a mosque for prayer without a scarf and having you body proply covered.
i see your point one shot but if a man/woman walk out half naked flashing there stuff expect to b stared at as an abject. im not the kind of girl to shy away from wearing the shortist skirt but there are ways of making it classy and not trashy. there are alot of lines not to cross and some people just run over them with eyes closed.
i am confused now...so why Karla is suggesting to wear Abaya??
and as a reply to your comment above , don't ask me
ask the whistles of men when a women with short skirt , a shirt looks like a bra walking in front of them :P.
and my opinion is :
i think respecting a woman in the road whatever she is wearing abaya or bikini is related the the man's manner.
and that is how we define gentle men.
alter
chest out might not work anywhere ;O)
Perhaps you have confidence issues? I get starred at all the time. Kee your shoulders up, chest out, and head high, and you will be fine.
i agree we all need to b respectfull to others no matter wat religion be it man, woman, child but we also need to respect ourselves and walk with pride.
crazy for, you wish.keep on dreamin. you have to be reincarnated even for my rott. to get interested in you.
one shot, Nope...as it makes NO difference whatsoever IF it is worn or not. I tried it myself...several times.
I also spoke to several women who routinely wear it...no difference.
Besides, tell me...why does a woman need to cover every inch of her body to be treated with respect ? ( which she still isn't)
Do men have so little self control that they MUST behave badly if they are allowed to see a millimeter of female flesh?
Come on, that's a pretty sad picture if true.
You just made guys look like neanderthals...;)
Girls...I wonder why Klara couldn't be a male with a female ID?
Come on guys, you know well enough what is going on here.
Would you like your sisters, wives and mothers to feel uncomfortable, by no fault of their own, just because they are going to the supermarket to buy food for dinner?
I am pretty sure you don't.
THANK YOU TOO MUCH.
you just justify the purpose of the veil in Islam , and why they like to put it :D
There is a difference between wanted and unwanted attention.
Come on guys, you know well enough what is going on here.
Would you like your sisters, wives and mothers to feel uncomfortable, by no fault of their own, just because they are going to the supermarket to buy food for dinner?
I am pretty sure you don't.
What Klara is talking about has nothing to do with vanity or attention seeking.
nice that u notice me so much :) but sorry im not into guys with special needs.... that grammer good enogh for you???
in one way or another , they like attention :P
read all the female comments up there , even your comment ;)
one_shot, for a woman from U.K Crazy for surely has bad grammar or is it grammer."atention' "forst'.bwahahahha
one_shot, thats not a good way to judge ALL WOMEN out here...
Anyways, its your way of thinking..be with it..:)
hmm i dont think any woman will complain about atention im the forst to admit i love it! its just wen it gets a lil too much tha u actualy stark getting paranoid if u have a booger on ur face... but i guess if we were geting absalutly no atention we wouldnt feel too good, cup half full and all...
i like this thread , it gives me a way to understand women more.
because even she is complaining but she is showing off :P
and a lot of female Qlers who said "ignore mode" they knew that they like it when this attention happen to them :).
Crazyz for yes you rest in peace err i mean ease.
klara, are you low on your confidence level??? my dear lady, walk with your CHIN high...
Let them stare at you..Just IGNORE them..its so simple..
Sometimes even married ladies are left with no exception..i've suffered the same even when i've gone out with my hubby and baby...
lol i rest my case.....
crazy for of course i'll make your side brighter.next time you need help drop me a p.m, Not
keep comenting i dont need a comeback as u show ur self up.... thankx for making my side in this argument so easy :)

Crazy for and when men circle you what do they say oh look at that freak.
ohhh so v r so lucky ... worse happens outide qatar.
Staring onlysolution IGNORE... and in ur mind just say "I DONT CARE.."
omg egypt is worse!!!!! i cano go out in egypt without a man. if i do i have men from al angles following me, standing infront of me so i cant walk, forming a circle round me, touching me inapropriatly!!! qatar is a safe haven compared to egypt!!!!
Nic
i'm trying hard to get ur frustrated intellectual level.
Just wonder how U had lived or living in ME?
care to elaborate, b/c if i were U, and full with hatred towards a particular region/race/nation, i would never been there.
Shall we keep continue the medication? ;)
I think she gets the point now can we move on?
Unless you are wearing something which is exposing more than it is covering, I believe you need a good doze of self-confidence!
So you need to dump these silly thoughts and carry on with your life; otherwise, they will haunt you until you end up with a psychiatrist!
cheers!
Don't worry Klara, Even I get dirty looks and I'm a male?
Well, I have to admit having the same problem
and I am just an average man....
Klara, nothing you can do about it. It will happen no matter what you wear or how unapproachable you make yourself to be. NOTHING you can do to change it.
All you can do is get used to it and block it out.
It will even happen if and when you go out together with your husband.
@Britey, Rizks bought melons did u say, hhmmm.... people are reported to have such a reaction after sighting me.... they are also reported to purchase Bottle gourds from the veg section . Then they move on to some other aisle.
jUs ign0re thEm kLara!
you had a simple problem which you make it a complicated one... oh dear.. that situation is too normal here... what's the big deal if they stare at you??? get a life out on it!!!!!
Fateh,
Obviously you don’t know the context of my rude observation and for that I will explain it to you:
Most of my comments here are counterattacked with a non-sense sentence that always starts with "NIC again???"
He's just getting the treatment he asks for ;)
PS. by the way, what you wrote above is quite indicative of what you are. You don't know Klara nor has she interacted with you, for you to accuse her of what you did!
Chances are that you and Alter Dusty may be of the same kind.
Nic,
who gave you right to certify Alter Dusty's intellect (poor level)??? Ohh, you thought it's your birth right to declare what you fancy for??
Alter Dusty.
Your poor level of interpretation is indicative of your intellect!
Who said anything about GCC citizens?!
What I said was: "GCC countries are huge gender unbalanced societies".
Here is what it means:
"The majority of the non-citizens are males from South and South East Asian and Arab countries working on temporary employment contracts in most cases without their accompanying family members."
oh tat was Melons, i thought it was sour grapes...? :(
Were you that Hot Chick at the vegetable market last week. I was spellbound and Rizks ended up buying some melons he didn't want :O)
NIC again???
mate GCC males are excluded from her list, look and re read again OP and poster's comments ;O)
she's blaming expats :((
Absurd cheap case of “attention seeking”
Go and do research on QL, all bad-looking females have put “touch me not board (don’t send PM..and what not rubbish…. If you see them in real you find they are not worth a dime….
Klara, you are just a few hour old here (or should I say you are a veteran QLer as usual change the ID) and know all these tricks
You wanna tell us all that you are very pretty???? sorry babe!
not impressive at all :(
Surprising to see this topic today as I was dis cussing with my hubby how my sex appeal just jumped a clear 25+% by just beeing here!I was not soooo hot in my younger years back home, but here am now older and hotter!can you beat that? The diff is vissible every where, in malls, office,.... you name it,.. life has become easier for me.... My point is Klare, look at the bright side,... it will get brighter if you have to apply for a job,....mean while the stres are quite unnerving but just don't look at them unless they come up close and stare. other wise just look at when you can screw up your face and adopt a very agressive attitude and they will run for their lives,....lol...Just look at it as a samll price to pay for the phenominal almost impossible jump and enjoy your new found status as long as it lasts,.. Good Luck!:-)
Klara,
This behavior also varies with the culture and education level and to aggravate the situation, as you should know, GCC countries are huge gender unbalanced societies (many single males are here on their own and have no access to girls and a normal sexual life).
In this case, not much you can do about it unless you lock them in some township in the Industrial Area or you lock yourself at home or perhaps leave the region.
Both sides are sacrificing their lives, and you are just experiencing your share!
Don’t worry too much about it, you are safe and you'll get used to it, human beings are resilient and adapt to harshest conditions!
but why no snacks with Tea ? :(
we cant sit in a course without having atleast a Parle-G biscuit with Tea...:( we are bloody Indians.
back to the topic, Klara STARE them back with Evil eyes....:)
it is unnerving and wearing an abaya doesn't help
Just try not looking around and 'block it out'.
Sorry some of the responses have been so rude to you.
She will be at the front of the class room so all eyes can see her. This is a staring class there wont be any sort of bondage involved. Class duration depending on your ability to grasp the content is one week...extendable by a week just like visit visa :P
My Bad :o(
I will join the course just to keep abreast of these theories..
britey you plonker !
if theories will be shared openly here then wots the use of this clumsy courses ? :(
brit you will have to sign up for the course to know that. :)
1 female and 20 males ? :(
So will she be sitting on a chair with hands and legs tied to the chair and surrounded by 20 males to stare her continous for 2Hrs ? :(
by the way, wots the class duration...i mean timings ?
"so we can put our theories to practice"
And what exactly are these theories ?
We can only hire ONE female to make it look more realistic, the feedback has to be genuine so we can put our theories to practice. So 1 female with 20 males per class.
Wow tats a cool course i say.
Will it be a co'ed or just males/females ONLY classes ? :(
Would be better if its a co'ed coz we can practise easily with reliable source's....:)
But of course! What good is a course if it does not come with a fancy certificate.
With the professional Stare Certificate you can apply for any job..any where...does not matter if you dont know how to do your job...just STARE at the work!
ok fine !
Will i get a certificate too ? :(
Can i get a good job in Oil & Gas companies with this Starring Certificate ? :(
Yes but will you be able to stare with confidence? Fine..for you and this is a one time deal only since you were born ugly...I'll throw in a discounted price, you can get the course for only Qr. 999.99!! Hurry limited seats only.
Qrs.1000/ ? :(
Tats too much you moron.
I can go to Ramada parking lot for much cheaper price and STARE for long.....:)
Rizks i'm going to start courses on Staring
Lesson 1: Dare to Stare.
Lesson 2: How to stare with one eye.
Lesson 3: How to stare with both eyes.
Lesson 4: How to give blank stare (special guest appearance by TimeBandit to give a short talk on this subject)
*tea break with no snacks*
Lesson 5: How to stare like a professional.
Practicals: We will hire Klara to practice our stares on her while she gives us feedback.
Last Lesson: Different types of stares to use at different occasions.
Fees: Qr. 1000/-
can someone teach me, how to stare ? :(
Well, you get the looks and get asked about your religion. What else do you get out there? Get serious, get a life and stop being paranoid... Enjoy your stay.
In Qatar ANY female gets unwanted attention no matter if she's pretty or ugly. So relax I dont think they are staring at you coz you are drop dead gorgeous but they must be wondering what is the monkey doing out of its cage :P
even you will wear it, it will be the same (obviously from certain nationality). the point is the quantity of females is too much less than the males quantity. in Egypt is the contrast, you will not find staring there.
God, never thought U will post my driving skills on QL!!!
but I am not that beautiful either - but I am a Whitish Westerner........
Never had a problem with staring from - locals-Indians-Pakistanis-Pinnoys- Asians or anybody.
I think it is more your perception or imagitination than anything else.
haha so glad its not just me!! well i meen im used to getting atention back home but the stares here seem a lil creepy :/ i also found i didnt get treated very well wen out shopping and things like that so i did get an abaya and it has worked but not compleatley. now i get evils from women i just dont get it but now wen i walk into a store they jump skip and hop to help me so i guess its up2 u
Sure get one. I mean the abaya.. and till then enjoy the attention that you may never have got back home. Well as you move along you will understand that people have nothing much else to do out here and thank god you have not been to the Industrial area yet.
If staring at you can make you pregnant, you have to worry. Otherwise enjoy the attention you get because beauty shouldn't be ignored... cheers!
?
I have perfected the art of staring and I can at the same time be on your right and left.....:) But, guess what, my stare is completely harmless...so no worries relax and enjoy ur stay...:)
Jeelu - it happens to every woman, I have made some research)))
This doesn't happen to every one here in Qatar and there might be something in your appearance.
Thanks a lot, guys, for your comments on my post and for support in this issue. I am here for a very short time, that's why "ignore mode" doesn't work for me now. I hope I will adapt later on.
But the most disturbing is when you are driving and people from right and left are staring...
Let me tell you - I am that beautiful to get so much attention. If I was, I would have already been used to all the attention and it wouldn't bother me here.
one_shot - he he he! yes, probably you are right, the people might be just scared to death and paralyzed by fear that's why they are staring. Haven't thought about it, but now I feel better. I am not afraid anymore! I will go and scare the crowd!
Klara...learn to go into "IGNORE" mode.
have you thought that maybe u r scary ....not the other option around??
i support freedom of looking :P lolzz
Klara, you’re thinking right...abaya in public places is a better option if you are alone: P
The things women do to make themselves happy....
I guess there must be something striking in your appearance. This doesn't happen to and average looking lady. Either you are a ravishing beauty or....well, you know what I mean.
Everyone here is from a different background...Just ignore them
i wanna b stared.. teach me that black magic..
Hi,how are you.
my name is tarek ,egyptian engineer working in qatar.
About your question, let me tell you,do not be afraid, you are in mouslim country.
Forget all your fear, we are your friends, all of us really.
Welcome to you in QATAR.

If you are not a Muslim(ie doing it for the sake of your religion) don't bother with the abaya in the quest to stop the stares. I happen to be in jilbab and niqaab and still get stared at by these pervs at times...and yes it is unnerving..Audubillah!
Maybe they just adore your beauty :) but i know how you feel... always get that look from men too., but i just ignore them, i just walk straight past them and dont bother to look back :)
yeah, who cares? if you can't kill them, join them!
who cares?
