All eyes on me…

Klara
By Klara

I think I will never get used to it… Staring…Everyone is staring like they have never seen a woman…No, not everyone but majority, you know who I am talking about and no, not Qatari. They are pretty polite in this regard. It's really scary sometimes, reminds me of a “resident evil” movie as if everyone wants to eat you. I am afraid to look around because if I do - I find at least three-four of them staring and they do not even bother to take their eyes off me when I look at them. This is so strange and really really scary…
I am thinking I should get an abaya...

Just happened to read this story last night. Quite an opposite... a woman stalking a man and guess she is well educated (didn't do the background check) and the guy lives in some real decent place.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1378125/Rio-Ferdinands-stalker-guilty-Susanne-Ibru-grills-England-star-court.html

What I intend to say is staring/ stalking etc etc isnt something specific to Qatar (or say GCC) as has been mostly concluded ...it can happen anywhere and by anyone irrespective of nationality or the individual's standing in the society... and may be, just may be the degree of intensity may differ or the offended individuals do not notice it elsewhere but get thin skinned while in this part of the world.

Anyways, without being seen as someone condoning or not accepting that this happens here or since it happens elsewhere it should be OK here, just would like to say... take care of yourself you good ladies out there and stay safe...:)

I will tell a lil bit of my experience: staring at you is not a big problem yet. They might follow you. Someone used to come near to the store I used to work at and standing for hours, following me I end up complaining to the Security. Sometimes they follow you when you drive, they might put an eye right on the parking spot. I got physically attacked by a teen in the elevator, I had a big complain to a landlord and eventually to the police station. I mean, this country is still safe comparing to others, but you have always know how to deal with it and avoid the situations you dont wanna be at. For your safety, try to be at the decent areas.

And I guess you are new in Doha, my advice --- ignore, coz u wont be able to change it. Eventually you'll get used to this sometime soon and wont even notice that.

If you get an abaya you will be chased by Qatari men and they will whisper you phone numbers :D But you right in a way, they actually have more respect to females then any others. Im talking about in waiting lines, not arguing back to a lady even he is not right, or giving a way on the roads, answering with pleasure if you need any info and its very good of locals.

hey guys, sorry that couldn't participate in the discussion earlier but so happy to see such a great response rate over here! I was actually busy following your advice and walking in a street enjoying the attention)))

thanks a lot to those who DO understand the issue and sincerely gave me good suggestions and support. Thanks also to those who have just proved the imperfection of human kind. these are probably just the people who have nothing to do in the office and try to make fun of new comers seeking some support. I am not surprised by the rudeness of some of the participants, it doesn't say anything but the level of your culture and intelligence.

Anyway, I will try abaya one day just to understand how it feels.

and, yes, great that my post have initiated some business ideas as well. I like it! do organize the course, but teach the concept of "social attention" - it will be much more useful here.

Big, fat NO ridaa.

WE, women, should not need to make ourselves unconspicious...not visible because some men can't behave.

MEN should, and many do, have the manners and courtesy to respect women no matter what they wear.

Women are PEOPLE not lumps of flesh there to please or not "arouse lustful stares".men...we have rights and responsibilities...and it is NOT our responsibility to humour or thwart disrespect. This is something every decent human being, in this case men, should have . respect for women is taught while growing up, as is respect for human beings in general.

I am sorry if my words are strong, but I have to admit that I do feel strongly about this...and all this stuff about women having to cover themselves not to tempt men makes me a bit irate.

What a woman wears should not make a difference as to how she is treated by men.....even if a man were to go to a strip bar, that does not mean he can be out of line when it comes to girls there..

As a matter of fact, I have seen a sign on a few bars in Thailand where a certain nationality was denied entry permanently...apparently they thought they could mistreat the girls....thing is, there are ALWAYS rules to be followed, no matter what.

Evn if a woman is a prostitute, she is still a hman being and needs to be treated with respect.

Of course, that apparently is lost on some.

By ridaa• 17 Apr 2011 19:57

of all the possessions in the world women are the most alluring to men

no man with a healthy mind and body or even without one (old men) can ever ignore a women

whether she is beautiful or not doesnot really matter

but the intensity and the no. of stares increases depending upon the attractiveness , dressing and body language

even women who tend to wear abaya for namesake tend to get stares especially ones with tight fitting and much elaborate designs

also eyes play an important role in the stare game

if a women stares back it will invite more intensified stares

thats body language

anyway an abaya will help to reduce these stares significantly , but choose a loosefitting , unattractive , sobre one

of course u cant change men ; they will stare till doomsday

this is if these stares r lustful ones

otherwise as one shot says it has to be something really strange or absurd

either way as nomerci suggests it is unwelcome a disrespectful

anyway only we our self can improve the situation by becoming as inconspicuous as possible

By nomerci• 17 Apr 2011 19:44
nomerci

one shot, you know, IMHO, you can't really compare that.

Women here get stared at ,in a very pertinent way, BECAUSE they are women, no matter what they wear. It would be different if they were wearing something unusual, but they don;t!

It is nothing more than bad manners and disrespect.

And that I really can't accepet. I can try to ignore it...but my opinion of those who do it is less than favourable.

And that has nothing to do with who or what those people are...everybody is able, if they want to, to behave respectfully.

i didn't mean in my words klara and criticize her clothes ..no

and yes like you said she is new here.

and i compare her situation to Scottish men with skirts in the middle east or abaya women in some countries of the west.

By nomerci• 17 Apr 2011 19:28
nomerci

oneshot, she is new in this environment. We all tried the abaya in the beginning.

oneshot, that does not happen a lot in places where women mostly wear Western clothing.

Most of the time a woman wearing what you describe will get lightly disapproving or looks that make a little fun of her.

But mostly it will be ignored.

and yes, manners maketh the man. Very true.

By crazy for cosmetics• 17 Apr 2011 19:16

i see your point one shot but if a man/woman walk out half naked flashing there stuff expect to b stared at as an abject. im not the kind of girl to shy away from wearing the shortist skirt but there are ways of making it classy and not trashy. there are alot of lines not to cross and some people just run over them with eyes closed.

By one_shot• 17 Apr 2011 19:09

i am confused now...so why Karla is suggesting to wear Abaya??

and as a reply to your comment above , don't ask me

ask the whistles of men when a women with short skirt , a shirt looks like a bra walking in front of them :P.

and my opinion is :

i think respecting a woman in the road whatever she is wearing abaya or bikini is related the the man's manner.

and that is how we define gentle men.

one shot, Nope...as it makes NO difference whatsoever IF it is worn or not. I tried it myself...several times.

I also spoke to several women who routinely wear it...no difference.

Besides, tell me...why does a woman need to cover every inch of her body to be treated with respect ? ( which she still isn't)

Do men have so little self control that they MUST behave badly if they are allowed to see a millimeter of female flesh?

Surprising to see this topic today as I was dis cussing with my hubby how my sex appeal just jumped a clear 25+% by just beeing here!I was not soooo hot in my younger years back home, but here am now older and hotter!can you beat that? The diff is vissible every where, in malls, office,.... you name it,.. life has become easier for me.... My point is Klare, look at the bright side,... it will get brighter if you have to apply for a job,....mean while the stres are quite unnerving but just don't look at them unless they come up close and stare. other wise just look at when you can screw up your face and adopt a very agressive attitude and they will run for their lives,....lol...Just look at it as a samll price to pay for the phenominal almost impossible jump and enjoy your new found status as long as it lasts,.. Good Luck!:-)

By Nic• 17 Apr 2011 07:50
Nic

Klara,

This behavior also varies with the culture and education level and to aggravate the situation, as you should know, GCC countries are huge gender unbalanced societies (many single males are here on their own and have no access to girls and a normal sexual life).

In this case, not much you can do about it unless you lock them in some township in the Industrial Area or you lock yourself at home or perhaps leave the region.

Both sides are sacrificing their lives, and you are just experiencing your share!

Don’t worry too much about it, you are safe and you'll get used to it, human beings are resilient and adapt to harshest conditions!

I guess there must be something striking in your appearance. This doesn't happen to and average looking lady. Either you are a ravishing beauty or....well, you know what I mean.

If you are not a Muslim(ie doing it for the sake of your religion) don't bother with the abaya in the quest to stop the stares. I happen to be in jilbab and niqaab and still get stared at by these pervs at times...and yes it is unnerving..Audubillah!
