Breast Cancer Awareness

I just read that Angelia Julie has double mastectomy !
She was not even diagnosed with cancer, but was afraid of getting it.
Do you think her decision was smart?

What do the women of Ql (In particular) think of Julie’s decision?

It's mostly because I feel in life there are risks involved, yes even of getting fatal diseases, in many things we do. And should we start to try to eliminate each and everyone of those risky, or even potentially risky factors and body parts, then well we may very well be on a never ending quest!

For that matter even surgeries carry hazardous possibilities, hence unless a doctor specifically tells me that I must undergo a surgery I wouldn't consider going under the knife voluntarily.

Bear in mind my reasons are not linked to anything vain and worldly though.Cos having seen my auntie,a breast cancer survivor, doing what she did,I know I will not hesitate to do the same if I had to.

Just out of curiosity FatimaH, and feel free to PM me the answer, why wouldn't you make the same choice? I noticed in the article I posted that the women also say they wouldn't do it, and I'm wondering if it's a religious thing?

But not something I can ever imagine doing myself, despite also having the cancer genes in my family. And of course I have my personal reasons as to why I wont do so just as Ms Jolie had her's.

That said I do believe cancer awareness should be for everyone, and all women should have regular screenings and take care of their general health and diet as prevention is always better than cure.

Miss MiMi:Sometimes you just have to do with what live deals you.

I don't usually take interest celebrities at all.

I find (most of them) awful people, detestable lifestyles.

however,I must admit that Jolie earned my respect and in a big way.

Great article in The National today about it:

http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/health/opinion-mixed-over-angelina-jolies-decision-to-have-double-mastectomy

Arab women apparently need to be especially aware of breast cancer, as they have even higher rates of contracting it and it appears to be more aggressive and develops younger!

They've got that here in the UAE too MN. But it's up to the woman if she wants to get a mastectomy.

Miss MiMi:Luckily in Qatar you don’t have to beg insurance companies to save your life.

The good news is Hamad hospital has a special unit just for breast cancer patients, research and diagnosis.

And it’s for free too!

I think it's fantastic Angelina Jolie is talking about it. A lot of women will be encouraged that if she can do it, when her life is so dependent on her looks, they can do it to.

Angelina Jolie has gone public to raise awareness...we should be discussing this.

Even if someone does something without a reason, why should we go and poke our nose into its affairs unless we spell out our lives in public domain to be able to be questioned by others.

If I was in her shoes and been diagnosed with the BRAC1 or BRAC2 genes I wouldn't hesitate to get a double mastectomy.

However I know women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and chosen to keep their breasts because they were more concerned with the possible after effects of losing them (husbands divorcing them, not being seen as a "real woman" anymore, etc), than they were with dying. It's not an easy decision to make.

I think she made the right decision, I too would consider it if I was in her shoes. She has six children and she is ensuring she can be there for them. 87% chance of getting cancer is huge. Well done to her for making other women aware...

Haha.. This post proves the power of "disinformation" used by all countries to sway the masses..

As to the post;

She has a faulty gene , which means that she has a nearly 87% chance of getting breast cancer. So, in order to mitigate the risk and knowing that her own mother died at a young age , she dicided to have a double mastectomy.

Well done to her. Brave and logical decision.

Did you mean Angelina Jolie? She was not diagnosed with cancer, she was just preventing the chance of getting one due to her faulty gene.. >.
