It's just what I heard but it could be prone to chinese whispers syndrome. Evidently all Doha Players have received an email concerning Dunestock, best ask them the reason for canceling it.

second hand from a Doha Players member that there will be no Dunestock this year - something to do with keeping a low profile and not staging a 'western style' event in these times (yeah I thought WTF are you talking about!)

still not sure on if i can go or not... cross your fingers for two more days because thats when we should have the new schedule set up at work wooo whoooo
thexonic - I think you've misunderstood the point of Dunestock. It isn't supposed to be a huge festival with big bands. Qatar isn't ready for that scale of event yet.
It is simply a gathering in the desert organised by Doha Players, where people can spend the day and have fun and local ex-pat bands are invited to play. I applaud them for making the effort to organise something. Most people just sit around complaining that there's nothing to do here.
Dune stock isnt that good here, i remember 2 years ago there was a band called "Hard Khor" lol, that was funny. The entrance was 50 riyals.
Dune stock is a part of Qatar trying to be Dubai, but it will never work. Dubai brings famous rock bands from around the world in the Desert rock. Even so, its something to do.
It's always the small things that make big differences.
18th April is still only a tentative date - they haven't announced anything officially yet. So I'd wait a bit unitl you go re-arranging your hectic social lives just to fit this in!!!
Think it goes on quite late. People camp over night. Better to go later anyways, once it's cooled down.
I picked about the worst place to shoot the pano from. Should've gone to the top in the middle, or on the gorund in front of stage. And I should've taken a tripod for the night shots. Oh well, you live and learn.
haha - the bands aren't that bad, but I think 'great' would be pushing it for all but one or two! Heck, I'm not complaining though, fair play to them all for putting on some entertainment.
Search didn't return anything, but I navigated to it and that is the area they hold it (in the dune which is cut in half by the top of the square you added, I think).
Did you add the note about it being "loaded with great bands"? Have you actually been before lol?!?!?
Yes, you can get there in a car. Last year they set up a car parking area next to the dunes and there was a few hundred meters of off-road to get to it, but it's just about do-able in a normal car.
I wouldn't have described it as crazy - unless you call lots of kids running down the sanddunes crazy! Though we didn't camp there so perhaps it gets crazier overnight.
The same thought had occurred to me bajesus, since last year they held it on the 9th March. But then the weather this year has been a lot different to last year - i.e. the cold snap was later and it's taken longer to warm up. I still think it'll be too hot though, which means most people wont turn up til the evening.
Could be the beginnings of a plan novi. Probably best to wait til they announce it officially. Have you been before? There were lots of kids there last year so it's good for families.
I noticed last year that people had taken beer & wine with them. Not so sure how advisable that is though - you'd be in the doo-doo if you got stopped on the drive down for any reason, or had an accident.
It's a music festival at the singing sanddunes organised by Doha Players. We went last year and it was a good afternoon/evening out; nice atmosphere and ok-ish music (all the bands are local ex-pat groups I think).
Here's the website from last year's festival; http://www.dunestock.net.qa/

Yeah, imagine 'western style' things occur in Qatar. The place would go to pot.

Oh, and I forgot to say that, according to the website, the money raised goes towards the Doha Players theatre rebuilding fund.
@thexonic, so when Qatar does an event in the desert, it's trying to be like dubai... that is simply absurd.
Would you rather Qatar had NO events?
Regardless, it's as Tallg said, this is supposed to be an event where 'local' bands can do their best. It's a large social.

have not been to the dune stock ,heard that it gets crazy out there
life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......
Toughen up. April in the sun sounds pretty good to me. Anyway, doesn't it go on all night?

In broad daylight?? Don't they know how hot it will be.... it's still Winter but the heat now is unbearable!
I definitely won't miss this one...

it was bloody fun last year - music, beer and tents - it's like a civilized country all of a sudden...
- I took the blue pill and found myself alive in Qatar - wish I had taken the red and stayed in Europe
should go out with the QL crowd. What do u think tallg?

what's Dunestock?
Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. --Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)
I imagine they're trying to finalise everything before announcing it officially, but the proposed date is 18th April, so pencil it into your diaries.
Seems a bit strange to me that if they are going to have it this year, why aren't they advertising on their website?
