Hello,

This post only to say that what the person say in this folloowing thread is true.

Just read the Gulf Times story.

Wondering where his mother got her prostate gland from? It is a male sex gland, no?

At any rate, I think he needs to get a speedboat to take him to Bahrain and then fly back the US from there.

There are people who have helped in more ways then they even know i that i am thankful for and you never have to worry about me loosing my faith that God will continue to help and guide me through this..... Adey believe me when I tell you that i have sought every possible avenue with the bank.I was at that office every other day and the only advice or maybe i should say SOLUTION was to 1- have a Qatari as a guarantor or 2- pay the loan back.. Those were the options given to me from all the people i delt with in the bank.

Also when you travel abroad from a 'developed' nation make sure you have a large safety net for whatever eventuality... at the end of the day we are responsible for ourselves.

And we have the means QL - newspapers etc to voice our plight.

There are many many people from non-developed nations who have to leave their country for fear of persecution/starvation.

Look at all the poor sods here getting 600QR a month.... what can they do?

Just think hard before you take out any kind of loan outside your own country.... you could be signing your own jail ticket.

I once watched a movie "the pursuit of happyness". It's about Chris Gardner. I don't know whether this story is based on fact or fiction. But it was very inspiring. This man Chris went through very hard times, but in the end he pull through all his hardships and managed to get a good job. I think ballinkg needs to watch this film and draw inspiration from the character of Chris Gardner.

'credit crunch' (hate that buzzword term) - could not a relative get a secured loan? Or secure employment in the US and ask the employer for an advance? (I don't know if that is practical in your line of work).

no that didn't sound condescending - just trying to explore all avenues - but you have probably thought of them before anyways.

sound condescending to you but have you seen or heard the problems that are going on with the economy in the states now. It would almost be impossible to get a bank loan from the states because for 1-i am not employed there and 2- Many of the banks ( the one's that have not ) closed are not giving personal loans at this time because they two are waiting to see what is going to happen with the economy.

I feel sorry for the guy, because he tried to do the best for his mother, for which he should be applauded and the Lord will reward him.

However, he was naive and should be helped by the US embassy. I am sure that if they wanted , they could work out a solution with the bank. I also wonder whether the embassy or the bank would have treated him differently if he was not black.

I think Ballinkq may have to broaden his field a bit if there are no openings for a basketballcoach currently in Qatar. Then he may find a lot of jobs in qatar. Banl loans are the responsibility of the applicant ONLY. A company will simply support an application by confirming his status as an employee but they will not act as Gaurantor. This guy needs to go to his bank and discuss just how he can repay the loan with no work. If the bank is International they can easily issue him with a letter confirming that he can repay the loan when he returns to the USA - that would satisfy the Authorities here. If the guy needs cash to pay his immediate expences and his flight home surely the QL crowd can raise it?

Poor guy but just why is it that Expats think they are 'safe ' enough to take bank loans in this 'here today and gone tomorrow ' society ! This chap had good reason to borrow but I think its crazy to take a loan for any other reason than that sort! Even a car loan is dangerous! I Suppose ur risk is less if u work for one of the BIG companies here but all over the Gulf there are private date pickers who become 'businessmen 'of the worst type. Ask around your own expat group!! It does happen and it COULD happen to YOU!!! Azi - if u need any help from me I seriously would do so okay. You are right, This country is dangerous, and more so for Asians. The same misfortune befalls so many Asian workers here. But nobody thinks its a problem for them. When a US citizen has trouble with his employer it is on the Gulf-times. But an Asian being ill-treated by his sponsor or a standoff with his employer draws no attention. They get the same newspaper coverage after being unjustly whipped by police in Doha streets.

Greentea, that's not really the function of the Embassy, to provide jobs for Americans who are out of work. They can give him access to resources and legal information, but they make it clear that US citizens are subject to the laws of the country, and this is a legal matter.

I feel for the guy, and I hope there is someone who will take an interest in his plight and provide him with a job.

I'm just clarifying that it's not the responsibility of the Embassy.

Where is his sponsor in all of this???

Anyway you can ask for, and get, special clemancy from the Emir or someone else in the ruling family? Or anyone here do it on his behalf?

As it is the bank will never get the money repaid so they have nothing to lose letting you leave the country in order to gain employment.

There must be some sort of personal employment number you have so that the US federal government can track the tax you owe on any work you do. Give this to the authorities and get them to put a stop on a % of your future earnings and have it direstlt paid in to your Qatar bank account before it comes to you - called a Direct Debit or Standing Order in the UK, don't know what they are called in the States.

I know this sounds logical, and that doesn't always work here, sorry if you have already been down this route.
