I'm giving up on Doha night life... :(

TexasGuy
By TexasGuy

I'm a male in in my mid 20's who moved to Doha a little less than one month ago from Dallas, Texas to work for an engineering firm. Prior to coming I was very excited about meeting new ppl and learning about the culture. I'm enjoying the work and love the food and culture.. BUT THE NIGHT LIFE SUX!

Over the last three weekends I've visited places like Garvey's, The Cube, Sky View, and (last night) Paloma for ladies night. I will mention that I went to Rydges last night as well but the door man told me that I needed to have a date!!! Isn't a major part of going out with the fellas to meet women. The Cube was not really my style and Paloma had 10 guys to every girl on Wednesday when it's suppose to be ladies night! Garvey's and Sky view were nice but is this all that Doha has to offer? I hope not.

I'll conclude by saying this. I wasn't expecting a night life similar to Dubai but when you take into consideration the amount of young businessmen/women who come from all over the world to work in this city.. you'd expect a little more.

Ciao,

TexasGuy.

Dude, the best thing to do around here is to find a nice group and go on desert trips, beach, and private house parties. That's the way to go.

spot on bud!

Save your money, its too materialistic a crowd anyway.

Do what the rest of us do - Leave, travel and see the awesome countries close by with real people and real night life.

I popped into Sri Lanka in December and even that was kick a**

As per experience (6 years in Doha) if you have a good friends, a good HI-FI, a Liquor Permit and a swimming pool's compound you can enjoy your stay in Qatar. Offcourse you can't compared it with Western style but better than nothing. Anyway Saturday and Wednesday the Doha's Clubs are pretty and full of people.

damn, all this about crappy night life is really discouraging me when it's about coming to Qatar. I'm a 20 year old girl coming to Doha in September to continue my studies and I come from a city that always lives and where people party every single night. All these posts are suggesting that nights in Doha are gonna be a disappointment :)

Joining a group can make your nightlife more exciting.

There are also websites here in Qatar where you can meet lots of ladies for night out.

i think us expats who have been used to the great parties and nights out in our own country are all let down here in Q, but you can have the odd good night out with friends...but there is a difference. if your single and want to chat up the ladies then its defo not the place!

we are all in the same boat together us men...maybe a mass party weekend in dubai?

TexGuy,

I'm in my mid 20's too and from Illinois. I'll be out in Doha in July and I'm kind of freaking out about the night life situation (or lack thereof) too!! From what I heard there are basically only a couple bars? ANd now you say you have to be paired up to even get in?!?! WTF! I'll go with you so we can get in!! But no C-Blocking... :P

when i first got into doha i tried to go out with a male friend to some pubs just to face so many problems and rejections at the doors! apparently nightlife is limited to couples in here..

anyhow after couple of months am too tired from work to go and try my negotiation skills with bouncers to spend a night! i'll reserve the energy to when i get back home on vacation! :)

I so totally agree with the dude that created this topic ..

night life lately is ( 95% of the time )

*sitting like drug addicts on some random street ( where we can see public ) smoke ml-reds talking the nights away *driving around hunting for preys*

* movies movies movies *

* going to the beach and getting gay with m8s

*and finally at home using the INTERNET ^_^

weekends are a total different story though

Hey all,

So, seeing the activity in terms of posts on this thread, im convinced there IS actually life out there in the blazing heat (yes, thats blazing even when the sun gos down (at least for me seeing as its winter back home)), and here I am aiming for my 100 points (is it now 200 ???) which will earn me the right to head out clasping a bowling ball to a shindig in the desert .. though I might have got that last bit wrong, must be heatsroke, I did venture outside today without my firesuit on for 5 mins :)

Heres my thoughts / experience on Doha nightlife so far:

It MUST exist, i think its all a matter of breaking into a circle of mates, in which case you can be on teh far side of the moon and still have a blast (uuuhh, .. as long as they serve moonSHINE on the dark side of the moon) :)

The trick seems to be the above, step one. Now Ive had an absolute blast in some of teh spots mentioned in the previous posts, but have to admit that although theyve been entertaining (propositioned by ABBA clones in Sheraton, alomst blown off the 20somethingth story in a freak gust at Skybar (and im not a small person), almost set alight at Pearls trying to convince the barlady that flame was essential for a particular shooter (seems alcohol and matches are illegal as a combination here ?? .... and this list goes on and on) none of the above has resulted in a circle of mates eager to go for round 2.

Now I'm the first to admit that going overboard is not necessarily the way to attract a second invite, (particularly here where its more likely to attract the removal of a body part), but are there any unconventional spots on the Doha radar screen ?

u r sooo right ..

Doha got no night life, if you are new, you have to find some friends from ur the us, they do some nice parties...

if you got some money to spend, i am sure you will find some philippina to hand with, if you got more money and a nice car, youj can find some Libanies or Tunisian,

check the expencive clubs for european girls,

if you are a member of Intrcn. or RZ Crltn you can have a bit of fun.

once you have a group, you can have a house parties it is FANTASTIC, ..music, drink, chicks whatever you want..

The secret is not givin up on the creative side of life... Der r actually loads of things tht u can end up doin during de late hours up 2 early mornings... If u r totally in2 clubbing check out places like Paloma(Hotel Intercon), Irish Pub(Hotel Sherton), Pearl(Hotel Marriot), Cloud Nyn(Hotel Merweb). But to make things even better, join de wang of party animals tht actually chill-out by de in-land sea or dunes beyond sealine beach resort. Der r loads of party animals who organize pretty fancy trips 2 de dunes & in-land sea havin trance/techno 2 swing ur head 2... All u need is 2 do a little bit of home work... Or else, gather up friends and hav a BBQ at ur backyard with music, simple.

I have been here for 6 months, and share the view of all the above, that this place is DESPERATE when it comes to nightlife. (- and I used to live in Islamabad !)

Having said that, and missing the excitement of lively bars, - I have never found them (anywhere in the world) to be the best places to MEET people (as opposed to pick up tarts)

If you want to pick up tarts, The Sheraton has a selection of dreadful Chinese girls in their 1st floor bar. When it comes to meeting people however I have had more success here via the web sites. Many Philippines girls here (shop assistants, nurses etc) seem to be members at Tagged.com and Frienster.com

Good luck

phew!...that's quite a long thread on something that doesn't exist...a social life in this town...ok here's the deal, the authorities here encourage 'clean,family,fun'...ie.if you're young & single, recently married or even married with kids but like to have a good time in a not necessarily sober state of mind...FIND ANOTHER PLACE TO LIVE :)It's their country so i guess they have the right to decide & plus you got tax free income- money to spare to buy that fancy car, take that exotic holiday, buy that new phone every month,etc...all that & a vibrant night life??...tsk tsk,now isn't that a bit too much to ask?

suggestion-fly out to Dubai thursday(air arabia to sharjah, low cost is the way to go!) & crawl back saturday night, sure it involves more time, money & effort but it definitely beats partying here(unless sleazy old white men & filipinas looking to be picked up by said sleazy old white men are your thing).

Otherwise there's always karaoke all night @ qube, cube whatever it's called(feels just like manila) or chameli night @ cloud 9(feels just like the sleazy dance bars in bombay)...who says Doha has no night life? *wink* :)
