Interest in dance or percussion classes?

I'm currently a professional musician and dancer in New York City, and I'd like to continue my career wherever I am. My husband will be working in Qatar again this fall, and I'd like to accompany him, but I've had no luck finding gigs in Qatar. (Any suggestions for that would be welcome.)

So, I'm looking at other ways to continue my career, and that includes teaching. I'm experienced at teaching traditional percussion, mostly for Egyptian, Turkish, and Balkan music, for belly dancing and line dances such as debke. I found a great store in the old souk last year, that sells suitable percussion instruments, so if you'd like to learn how to play those things, I can teach you. (I don't, however, know how to play traditional Qatari music, although I'm interested in learning.)

Also, I could teach belly dance classes. I dance in the New York City style, which is a blending of the styles of the various immigrant groups who live there, such as Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, and Greek. Also, in the last few years, these styles have been blended with hip-hop, funk, and jazz, so I could teach that more modern New York City style of belly dance if there is interest.

It seems strange for a Westerner such as myself to be offering to teach these arts in the East, where they originated, but, as I don't see the Qatari market saturated with locals offering to teach these things, I figured I'd make the offer.

If enough people are interested, I will then look into where and when to hold the classes. I welcome venue suggestions.

The results are in. There were 7 replies about dance, none about percussion, so I'll look for places to hold dance classes.

I guess people don't want to learn percussion, because they don't want to hang out with belly dancers, playing music for them. There's no accounting for taste.

there is this new club called sehati beauty club next to decoration centre. its not officially inaugrated but its open.

they have yoga, aerobics, ball room dance and hip hop in their schedule of fitness centre. they charge 350...not sure if individual or for a set number of classes. i was more interested in the gym.

hip hop right now is just once a week.....

its a 2 floor setup....2nd floor has the salon and 1st floor has the gym with the workout room.go to the 2nd floor and ask them for a tour.a girl named mouna sits at the reception....she will help you out with your questions.

take a look at it. its neat. i liked it. more specifically its only women so it caters to a lot of local preferance.

hope this helps.

hey melissa, how are you?

i would love to learn belly dancing.whenever you are down here give us a shout on QL.......and we will try to gether up a tiny group for you to teach.

infact i just visited a new healthclub cum spa here that is recently opened and they are offering hip hop and ball room dancing along with aerobics.

while you are here you could visit them and see if they would like to add to their team of teachers....you could start your own belly dance class.

moreover i think i had read someone mention on QL about belly dancing classes being held at one of the 5* hotels.
