Police raids bootleg distillatory
Police have arrested two expats for selling home-made liquor after raiding a villa in the Al Laqta area one recent evening, media reports state.
The men, described as “Asian,” were apprehended amid large plastic drums and a stockpile of empty plastic bottles that police said were used to operate the distillery, the Peninsula states.
The expats, who have been referred to the public prosecutor, have confessed to the crime and said their customers were mainly “Asian nationals,” Gulf Times reports.
Though alcohol is available for purchase at select locations in Qatar throughout the year, the country goes dry in Ramadan, and hotels pull alcohol from their bars and minibars.
Qatar Distribution Company, the only licensed retail outlet where liquor can be purchased for home consumption, is closed during the month, but even when open is available only to expats whose salary is above a certain threshold.

There defense will likely be that they were making cologne. They're lucky the didn't blow their home up or poison someone.
The problem is the QDC opening hours, it's that some low-waged expats what to spend what little they have on alcohol and the government will not allow it.
Well tar that narrows it down to about 1.3 billion people. All clearer now....
They did not lie..They only did not specify. As per my knowledge the ones who usually make local alcohol beverages are either Sri Lankans, Nepalis, or Indians. And they usually live in the industrial area.
but that's not my point. Political correctness?
Qataris are Asian too. Was it one of our brothers?
just curious about how the news is presented here. Is it journalistic principle not to give out the exact nationality of these people? Asian. I'm asian. Are they from my country? Maybe we know them? I thought journalism is about telling the 'truth'.
True, alcohol brewed like this can be really harmful.
the alchohol brewed in such places can be lethal - so I think they did the right thing ..
Drink plenty of (W)ater as much as you can & save your LIVER!!!
I think the problem for these people is they are the low paid, so even when the bars and QDC is open they cannot afford to drink in the bars and are not able to get a QDC lience as some companies will not support their application. So they only have two options, stop drinking or make you own. In Saudi it is the second biggest business after O&G.....
Correction. Hotel minibars are still stocked and guests can drink in their room if they wish.
