Saudi girl, 12, given HIV-infected blood
Health authorities in Saudi Arabia have apologized after a 12-year-old Saudi girl was given contaminated blood in a botched hospital transfusion.
“A young girl received HIV-infected blood following an error by an employee at( Jizan General Hospital), the health authority in Jizan, in the southwest corner of Saudi Arabia, said. “The error was discovered during the technical review and the patient was recalled immediately. She was immediately admitted to the King Fahd Hospital where she is receiving special treatment in line with the medical standards in such cases. Her family has been informed and an apology has been presented to them,” the statement said, local news site Sabq reported on Thursday.
The health ministry set up a committee to conduct an investigation into the incident before taking stringent disciplinary action against those found guilty of negligence or misjudgment, the ministry said.

This is terrible. Poor girl. Aside from massive compensation, the system that allowed this to happen needs to be seriously examined and the people responsible dealt with harshly. Handing a check to the family, as is too often the case in Saudi, is no the answer.
poor girl. this is like the case of ryan white, the hemophiliac boy who got a blood transfusion tainted with HIV in the 80's. the excuse back then was that it was a relatively newly discovered disease and hospitals didn't know how to test for it properly that time.
Leaner seems the Health Ministry decided to skip the committee and go ahead with its own decisions!

Leaner: The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health has decided to exempt a number of the staff at Jazan Hospital
(I’m guessing those‘d be the Hospital’s manager and his powerful board members) on the wake of scandalous incident of contaminated blood transfusions to a 12 years old child Riham Al-Hakami.
The rest of the staff ( Everybody else without a long title before their names ) are going to be fined and a number of them will be referred to the Health Authority Jazan another verdict has been issued for the arrest of the blood donor ( After all its all his fault isn’t it? )
In an official statement released by the health ministry yesterday): "What happened was the mistake of one individual ( and I assume this poor nurse is going to take all the burn ) failing to apply the official standards adopted by the hospital’s blood banks.

Apology?? how it will compensate the girl??
But MN u wrote this point also...
"The health ministry set up a committee to conduct an investigation into the incident before taking stringent disciplinary action against those found guilty of negligence or misjudgment, the ministry said"
Just to revalidate ur reply to Super Cool...
That girl's life is ruined and they give only an apology... If I were the father I would use the infected needle and stick it to all the staff that attended her daughter!!!
Patient always the last person to suffer from medical errors of doctors and their staff. This was always happening in SAUDI because of non-qualified medical staff hired by saudi government. There are lots of so called DOCTORs in that country.
What a sad incident and only apology??????? HIV is a serious case for God sake!
WTF!!!
upi.com LMAO
Forget the mistake, Is it not a will be happening indirect murder ?
And if it happend in a country like China there may also be executions!
Fatimah / Drsam : You know in smart countries such as Saudi Arabia its standard procedure to keep all the HIV-infected blood in unmarked containers right next to the clean blood.
Supper Cool: If this happened anywhere else on earth, there’d lawsuits, investigations, and resignations!
Instead the Saudi govt excused all parties involved in this tragic episode deeming the crime as “an act of God " !
no amount of money or appologies can bring back a healthy life the girl was supposed to have!
@MN
u mean to tell me that if this had happened ANYWHERE ELSE on earth the patient wouldn't receive any monetary-based apology!!??
yes. centers for blood draws should be separated from hospitals; once the blood drawn is tested save, it should be transfered to hospitals. bad samples destroyed, and their donors alerted if unaware of their conditions.
we should wait for the investigation.
I shudder to think then how many more people they may have infected similarly throughout the years that they have been in operation..and I wonder then how many more "apologies" they'll have to issue!
Fatimah/UK : Perhaps it is tested for HIV only once it arrives in the hospital, leading to a mix-up in the stores of clean and infected blood /-: !!!!
poor girl has to suffer all her life for no fault of hers.
life is indeed a b i t c h !
What a blunder! how did the contaminated blood get there in the first place!
But for the love of God can anyone explain how a hospital could not only have a store of HIV tainted blood, but even managed to transfusion it to a patient?? The authorities should be not only made to pay big for this damage, they should also be jailed and further investigated as to how many more cases of malpractice they may have on their heads! Seriously this is just inexcusable and infuriating!
agree with QDC. with modern therapy, HIV has become a mere chronic desease that virtualy won't evolve into AIDS. and she can have normal uninfected chidren. the her treatment is costy, but in her case she will not pay.
So the Health ministry ‘n Saudi Royals think they really can fix this shate with huge monetary-based apology?
How come everything in the Middle East is bought off with money even the human life?
Poor girl, however with the modern treatments she can lead almost a normal life.
Lucku: Question is what the fook type of hospital keeps blood infected with HIV????
Shame, HIV has ability to cut ur life in half especially if it progresses to full blown AIDS. No amount of apology can fix this virus. Her future is doomed, who will marry her or have her own children. Sad story indeed
:/
Apology will be enough?
