Volunteers bring cheer to workers

rMs_000
By rMs_000

Members of the Qatar Living Volunteer Group have conducted their second distribution campaign, supplying a large number of labourers with water and other supplies to make it through the summer.
Following the collection and sharing of items last weekend, the group decided to host another collection on Thursday evening before distributing the donations to some of the neediest residents of Doha.
The group leader, known only as “Speed”, explained that the campaign had gone extremely well and that simply being outside during the daylight hours gave all the volunteers an idea of the extreme temperatures and conditions in which the labourers work.
At their collection on Thursday, the group amassed some 200 caps and t-shirts from QAPCO, 200 caps, t-shirts and wet towels from SIGMA Paints, and 250 bottles of water from Talent Resources Recruitment.
Around 40 group members also donated items such as bottled water, energy drinks and protective clothing.
Speed said 10 cars loaded with the donations drove around the city yesterday to distribute the items to groups of labourers that they found working out in the sun without shade or any other form of protection.
From around 10am until 3pm the group visited some 1,300 labourers in various parts of Doha.
“They were extremely happy,” Speed said, “and very surprised.”
“They could not believe that we were not a company when we told them we were simply individuals living in Doha, hailing from all over the world, who had gathered together to run this campaign,” he added.
Speed said that there will be one more collection drive this summer, taking place before Ramadan in August.
And after the “overwhelming” response from the volunteers who took part in the initiative, he said that this may become an annual event.

Last week I heard that some kind hearted soul like you took some Nepali workers to the zoo for an outing and in return they cooked a meal for him in his house, which he of course shared with them.

May be you can take some of them for a dhow ride or organise a musical for them or ask them what they want and it it is within your reach, try to arrange it for them.

So If we can do some brainstorming to find out better ways to provide more effective solutions in the long run, that would be great.

As for Ramadan, some of them are already Muslims and fasting, otherwise, there are ways to sneak up somewhere to have their meal and drink water constantly.

Hard labor, severe weather condition and ill health together may permit a Muslim to refrain from fasting, let alone if they were Non-Muslims.

Hi there! You're right, all of these basics would be wonderful for the laborers.

Perhaps, like Brit said, a good meal during Ramadan would be great!

Medical care - provided by company

Annual ticket home - unlikely, since many only get a vacation after two years..

However, we could help with providing food during Ramadan..

Happy Happy

I think most of hard workers would only need these basics to cheer them up:

1- Some good meal and cool water.

2- Shade from the scorching sun.

3- A space to stretch for a good night sleep.

4- A little amount of monthly saving.

5- Medical care.

6- Annual ticket home to get together with their families.

Not too much to ask.

Salam

I bet some of these guys have talents of their own.

Perhaps, after entertaining them with the talents of QL members, some of these guys might want to volunteer and sing/dance/play a musical instrument for the masses!

God bless you all! That was so nice of you!

I have a little idea, it's been on my mind since the very first time I saw the laborers wandering around with nothing to do on a friday afternoon but to hang out around the souq. Why not trying to bring some entertainment to them... I don't know, music... God, I can't come up with an idea of how to entertain them (that requires some surveys), but it just breaks my heart to see them all dressed up in their best clothes to do NOTHING special but walk around... A guitar group, a dance show, whatever.. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of member who are very talented and can come up with ideas or something....

maybe it is a silly idea...

Huge responses from the QL Memebers on the collection drive.

and a brave distributuion drive by few member of QLVG and some non-QL members...

On rough count more than 800 labours were entrtained and the smile and happiness on the faces of those laborers were priceless.

Thanks to PITSTOP taking the intiative and SPEED for managing the campaign and the Volunteers for their generous and kind support.

Lusitano - I doubt I ll be able to support you on this one.

There are many things we think govt is not doing..

But they aim to touch and help the majority of the population.....

And for those who don fall in tht set of majority.. there are Volunteer groups who go out of the way to help them... :)

Govt. is nothing but WE... WE If we had Power....

considering them as a another identity and blaming them for all the wrongs doesn solve many of the issues....

Specially in a non-democratic governance where there is no Opposition to take over if the present one fails to live up to expectations... :)

Rizks,

Thanks.

It’s only the local media and that won't exercise any pressure on the local authorities.

I suggest you send it to CNN i-report and BBC.

When the truth of these poor people becomes well-known in the world, maybe the local authorities (always and only worried about image projection on the international stage), will do something about their weak policies and weaker enforcement.
