Have you tried alternate exercise activities that are equal to rock climbing such as using

Recumbent Exercise Bikes ? Maybe the can help cut your expenses and at the same time help prepare you.

well, i knew it would come to an end sooner or later but last nighet they finally took a copy of my ID and asked me to "no play on climbing." The security staff was pleasnt as usual and informed me that I could get a pass from the reception then, no problem, but i seriously doubt that. nevertheless i will try and let you all know if I can in fact gain ledgitimate access.

As long as the cat is out of the bag I may as well say, it is a fantastic wall. I have tightend loose holds on a few routes but other than that, it is in perfect working order. The natural features are integeated into color coded routes and with so many shapes (arete, chimney, arch, overhang, face, slab...) there is so mcu I still have not done. Frustrating indeed...

anonymous

Won't bring the tools this time round as there are many other more essentials things to bring... all the same once there you can show me the place, and I could get them sent by post?

Was also contemplating the dunes... for some sand telemarking! I won't bother if the dunes are not big enough though.

Anyway, visas seem to be stuck so by the looks of it i won't be in place before next week Mon/Tue.

Cheers

good idea but pro is not really a problem when you can park your car on top of the cliff and use webbing to set up a top rope. I did this once with some non-climbers that just wanted to absail. If your really think it would go, bring your crampons and ice tool... It wont go for just freeclimbing, way too soft/overhung. I just wish it was pocket-y limestone like home =(

Oh and as far as 'trashing the site' just wait till you see these places. Then you will know what trashed is! never-the-less i see your point; it's just hard to respect a country when it's own people could care less...

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2009 12:55
anonymous

Sounds like it could go with warthogs for pro on the lead/top rope belay. People do it on the white cliffs of Dover England...it's chalk there.

My only reserve would be that we would trash the site.

Anyway mate I pm'd you today. What about that aspire place? No news?

no, it's not sand dunes but these 15m tall wind eroded rock outcrops. They are a great shape for overhng climbing but SO soft. It's some sort of mica- (not sure) limestone and it flakes away at the touch. What used to be surface table sits on top of these formations and is more resistant to erosion but still too 'chossy' for climbing. This is what gives them a mushroom shape. Google it...

oh and yes, there is a very nice wall in qatar but it is not open to anyone... aspire themselves are not even using it. Don't try to understand it, it only leads to frustration. I once heard a little bird mention that there is no security on friday mornings and that the bolts are good but those birds can be trouble-makers.

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2009 11:07

There is a wall in Qatar and no one can climb it?

....and they spend billions on sports.....for whom?

MP Zikreet would be all sand dunes...I guess...

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2009 10:47
anonymous

just thought of something... I wonder if you could 'ice climb' the walls at zikreet? It's too soft to climb for real but i have absailed off top rope out there before. Any ice climbers with crampons and axes out there?

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2009 10:43
anonymous

It's getting cooler =) I will be back in about a month and want to start bugging aspire again sice it looks like they are still not using the wall.

DJ,

you can get gear in dubai and i imagine they could ship to qatar but you are talking about a lot of overhead that will reflect in price. Best to get your gear in europe or n america. Maybe a friend could bring some things back for you if they visit one of these places. Note that this stuff is heavy tho... The problem will be where to use it. You can scuba in Qatar but you cant climb (well sorta)

Apart from the wall.. Can you guyz plz tell me where can i get the equipment for rock climbing and stuff like that. What will i require and how much should i be expecting..??

i am working as a bike medic here in aspire.i have done some rock and wall climbing also.i tried to climb the wall here and sad to say because of the weather here and poor maintenance most of the bolts are loose.

i hate to inform u that according to the staff here the wall will be use by students only but who knows it might be open for public to like the swimming pool here in hamad aquatic center.

Jackmohan,

Where do you get your info about the aspire wall? You might be right but I havn't heard it confirmed by any credible source one way or another. Also I wonder which category I fit into? maybe nerd, haha?

Getting own gear is no big deal.....getting a wall to climb in Qatar is really, really big deal...

By anonymous• 6 Jan 2009 17:52
anonymous

kanaway...count me in...

The city centre wall is pethetic...kids run up the wall in about 15 sec......I would be ashamed to even try it in front of all the kids.

Aspire with its beautiful wall will mostly be for "Showcase", "Spiderman" and International competitons not for nerds, amature or even professional climbers.

Trecking in the snow could be painful....one guy I trekked with "Mr Prakash Tendulkar" lost five of his toes on the Himalyan trek...kind of "put me off" snow-treks. In distress help is quite far away and of course bad weather comes any instance and one cannot move.

By anonymous• 6 Jan 2009 17:20
anonymous

u were given permission? :O omg... means... v could actually climb legally before it opens?! loose hold at the arch? man.. u soloed it, huh.. Yeah, i agree, the natural features are simply amazing. Its just like the outdoor rock climbing! Mitch, do update us of the latest news :D

ale! ale! ale!

By anonymous• 4 Jan 2009 15:41
anonymous

Nice reporting Kanz!

I got about the same response from the gaurds even after telling them I was given permission over the phone. They were nice enough but not informed. The arch is not as hard as it looks but the holds are scary loose. I really like the 'natural' features on it. I emailed aspire again today just for an update, no news yet. I guess that speed well is for top-rope because i didnt see bolts on it.

Kanaway,

i think that you might be getting 2 of my post mixed up. Right now, if you want to climb the aspire wall you would need your own gear. The place that I mentioned outdoor climbing far from town is only bouldering and therefore does not require any gear other than possibly a crash pad.

After 2 attempts, finally found the Aspire's wall. Its quite far from Villagio, around 10mins walk. Credits to aussieswede & mitch for the location. Manage to snap some photos (sory for bad noise & blur images) enjoy peeps!

Fences seems to b completed but there are minor unfinished wiring inside. Lucky the gate wasn't locked at that time, took the opportunity to enter the area. Instead of climbing over the fence.

There are 3 walls inside which height ranges from 8-10m. As Mitch described, the features are amazing and alot! Nearly like the outdoors. Bolts, rings & anchors are ready. Ropes and Quickdraws, anyone?

The horseshoe shaped wall seems to be the hardest. As you can see, the horseshoe is slanting around 80degree. The route is hard even by the looks from the bottom of it, before u start to climb. The wall behind seems to be the highest and it is quite nice. Its a "L" shaped from the above view, so you could prolly just smear ur legs left and right on the features till the top.

There are 4 boulder walls at each corner, prolly around 3m heights and only small stones would act as ur crash-pad. So, no dyno unless you want some scars or broken leg :p

The walls and handhold are being made by Entreprises(EP). The holds are still good and arent loose, tried a few runs of traverse on the boulder. EP is the top leading wall constructors in the US if I'm not mistaken. Glad to have it here in Qatar!

After a few minutes of traversing, the security guards finally noticed us and we're being chased away. They informed us that the place is a private property of Aspire Academy. When it will be opened? The guards were only able to repeat "only aspire's ID are allowed to enter the area" and the wall section above is for speed climbing i believe.

the wall at city center for me is not a good one, as other mentioned it is dark an noisy but that's the only one we have for now. the price is qr 15 for 1 or 2 climbs but i talked to a guy there he said he can give us up to 4 climb for the same price if they don't have much customers. i think it would be better if we go there in groups so that we can negotiate for the price.

m5050 mentioned about a place outside doha where we can do rock climbing. it is far and we need to have ropes and gears.if we guys were already comfrtble with each other we can go there and give it a try.

is kanaway going? on his first post, he mentioned that the place is expensive. I agreed that it is quite expensive and the environment is abit.. inappropriate? Its in the arcade and abit dark not to mention noisy.. 1 or 2 climbs till the top would b ok i guess, but for enthusiastic climbers.. doubt it suits for most of them..

woah! the wall sounded very interesting and big! is it by any chance it is made by the company, Blocx? darn, think it would b pricey :/ fuwairit? deep water solo? omg.. intensive & scary.. theres no corals or rocks at the bottom, right :O

yeah! hueco! and the movie was - Free Hueco! :D have tonnes of Climbing Movie in my HDD. man, the environment sounded cool.. relaxing.. there's no place like home, huh Mitch :D

ohh, do drop by! the newly opened spot is Tambun, Perak & B.Keteri, Perlis. David Larma opened up the routes :D Keteri is da L33t! Routes are massive even by the looks of it! But nothing beats Krabi, climbing with the breath-taking sea view.. or deep water solo there.. Darn! ill try to find a link for Keteri & Tambun. Believe i have it.

Aspire: ya, about 7m should be right. There are mostly vertical routes but some with slight overhangs near the top. There is an arch with at least one great roof-route. The holds are well placed for the most part and the wall has more natural features (cracks, ledges, arets) than any wall I have used before.

fuwairit is a beach to the north. It's bouldering and I guess you could call it water soloing at high tide. It is sharp but hey, beggers cant be choosers ehh! I will PM you if I get a chance to go out there again. Same with the flat, i'll pm you.

Ya texas has some great bouldering. Hueco tanks is probably what you saw in a vid. Chris Sharma kinda made that place famous. Austin has great limestone, some granite, and good boulders as well. The best part of climbing at home for me is the environment. Breakfast tacos, cool rivers to swim in behind the climbs, live music in town... Its not all desert (like hueco) and cowboys. homesick now!

Speaking of thailand, I noticed you are from malaysia. If krabi turns out to be a tourist trap my best friend and I plan to take the buss to ur country for a newly opened spot. cant remember the name tho...

havent yet! darn. still squeezing time to have a look at it. work + transportation prob :( how big is it? 7m? routes? straight wall?

Qatar? fuwairit? wheres that?.. boulder or u bolted some routes there? (yay!) superb rock formation & routes? Do invite me, next time! dead bored here & hardly exercise.. darn.. ohh, bouldering wall @ ur flat? coolness! how much per entry? :p

texas? theres a climbing video/movie about texas bouldering, right? if im not mistaken that is.. uhh.. really wanted to climb @ the states.. esp Yosemite! Tonsai? Krabi? Thailand? my fren told me the place there is superb for climbers! prolly caused most climbers hang around there. sheet.. im day dreaming too already..

yes a good price! Also hours, i really hope it will be open at night! I have applied for a part time job there but my availibility is so limited bc of my work now. Did you go look at the wall, it looks great huh?

outdoor rock since uhhh april, hmm... In Qatar I had some fun with the rock at fuwairit but never got anyone else to join in. I built a bouldering wall in my flat but thats not outdoor. Out of Qatar I have really been lucky =) Climbed some great spots in europe, went home to texas to climb with old friends, and enjoyed a fantastic Eid climbing in Greece! I'm most excited for my upcoming trip to Tonsai, Cat Ba, blue mnts, and Tassie. ahh, thanks for the momentary daydream-break, haha.

I could be wrong since I have not checked for a while but I seriously doubt that they will open it on the 1st of december ...sorry, even I hope im wrong =)

By 'not turned over' I mean that the construction company has not officialy completed the job and handed it over to aspire. In fact the construction of the fence surounding the wall is still incomplete.

It is located near the 2nd parking area after the main aspire arena (in the villagio area). Look for a new building being constructed in the parking lot.

I aspire to climb but my aspiratinos are not keeping me in good climbing shape!

About dukhan, i guess ur talking about Bir Zakreet? I had a good look at these cliffs but they would not hold a peice of trad gear, a bolt, or even me. The rock is soft and flakes away with the wind (hince the formations). If your talkign about another wall let me know!!!

Recently my search has brought me to some castle like walls and buildings w/long traverses. (got tired of tearing my hands up on that coral)Still cant find lumber but its always an option

Hiya - interested in climbing; but I guess I'll see you lot down there at the aspire wall once it's opened! Hopefully they'll let experienced/competent people on without instructors, as they tend to push the price up... Went to take a look at it yesterday, looks nice enough but I guess we got to wait and see whether the prices/access hours make it a viable climbing opportunity.

Wait and see! Also my kit's back in the UK so got to assess whether it's cheaper to buy new stuff here or ship my own stuff. Dilemma.

Hello,

As a lot of persons apparently, i'm also very interested by rock climbing in Doha. I use to be a wall climbing initiator and to climb very often... but not anymore.

Please contact me if you are looking for a partner, i would be very happy to climb again ! I have my material (belt, shoes and some quickdraws).

See you

Guillaume.

North East of Dukhan there are 20 to 30 m high hills with perpendicular sides. Why don't you try it there first?

Hi, I'm new here and want to get out climbing and biking. More enthusiastic than skilled, but I have done a bit of both. How's the climbing wall story going? Would love to meet up with people to climb or bike with.

kanaway, we will just have to keep trying I guess...

I dont speak tagalog but i saw the section about surfing. Unfortunatly there is no surf here at all. That coming froma texa surfer means there truely is NO surf here. I have wakeboarded a little here and have a kite w/a hole in it but thats all the boarding I know to do here. Oman and UAE have decent surf, and great climbing. Unfortunatly we are in Qatar :/

I know I have said this several times but there is bouldering in Fuwarit. No established problems as I think Im the only one doing it but at low tide there is a lot in the V0-V2 range. It's hot now but it happens to be a great place to camp... PM me if ur interested in an outing, a spotter and some co-motivation could really make that place a lot more fun.

Mr. Vichu, thnks for the update. I would like to clarify some things with you. "NOW TRESSPASSING TO THAT SITE IS OFFENCE," "SO KINDLY AVOID PLANS TO HANGOUT THAT SITE," we are planning to use the said facility of course if it is open to the public, we are discussing our plans how when and whom to climb.that's why we are waiting for the updates.

we are not the type of people who will jump over the fences, cut the wires or break the locks just to do climbing.S.O.Y.!!!

mp5050 is offering some help, please inform your team maybe they'll consider it.

next year!? and you expect the holds to be in the same condition w/the salt and dust in the air by then?

Have you had problems with trespassers allready? what kind of offence is that? did they get fined or what?

The wall is quite empresive, its a shame it cant be climbed! What if I was to offer to set routes?

DEAR ALL,,

REGARDING ASPPIRE CLIMBING WALL,I WAS ALSO A TEAM MEMBER OF THAT PROJECT,NOW IT IS TOTALLY COMPLETE.

BUT STILL IT IS NOT OPENED FOR PUBLIC,IT WILL BE COMMISSIONED ONLY NEXT YEAR..NOW TRESSPASSING TO THAT SITE IS OFFENCE,

SINCE CLIMBING WITHOUT THE PROPER HANGERS AND GUIDE ARE NOT PERMITTED AND IT IS DANGEROUS ALSO.SO KINDLY AVOID PLANS TO HANGOUT THAT SITE,AS SOON AS IT IS OPENED FOR PUBLIC ,I WILL POST THAT HERE..OK

Thought u might be interested, they have recently completed an outdoor climbing wall area at the back of ASPIRE near the football fields. About 10m high at most, but awsome actually. U can under climb a 8m horseshoe formation and its surrounded by bouldering walls (3/4m). Anchors and grips are in and with some rope and quickdraws she's ready to climb. Although I dont know what ASPIRE would say but no one is using it and its outdoors so....... nothing really stopping anyone. Ive got pic's if anyone interested? ENJOY

You will have a great time in Chamonix. Its climber's paradise. Perfect for bouldering, top roping and free climbing. Its also great for mountaineering but May is probably too early for a summit attempt.

My suggestion is to hook up with some guides who know the Mont Blanc Massiv real well. They can take you to some great places. I used a Swedish guide for two weeks. I was the leanest and fittest I have ever been and learned a huge amount.

Summiting Mont Blanc was tough though. I slept for 20 hours when we eventually made it down to Chamonix. Worth it though, the views and crevasses were amazing.

Be very careful, Mont Blanc is a dangerous mountain and claims approximately 100 lives a year. People think it is easy but it isn't. Have a great trip.

I love to climb and have been looking for a belay partner and some rock but w/no luck.  Let me know how this new wall is!!!  If it sucks like the one at city center then help me build a bouldering wall!  I have the parts (holds, bolts, t-nut, jibs) just need the raw materials and a little motivation.

Richard123, im headed to Chamonix in about a month for some sport/trad =)

got any suggestions? So far im looking at Le Joux and Les Gillenads (sp?)

I did not know about the climbing wall at Aspire - if anyone has tried it or has more information (ie open to the public) would love to know.

My wife and I used to sport climb all the time - if Aspire is available and you guys are interested love to join up and try it out.

thanks

my first step to serious mountaineering life will be to conquer the highest and technically demanding mt. in the phils. then have training for snow climbing. i haven't trie one.  maybe if i gained enough experience and money i'll start planning for everest.

that's every mountaineer's dream to conquer mt. everest and other 8,000+ mountains.
