Hi there, Im currently living in HK but am thinking of accepting a job in Doha. I trying to do my homework about the place before I decide. I know that things are going to be a bit less hectic over there but I just wanted to know about the social scene. Can a single girl find a social life or will I have to take up knitting!

Getting a drink is as easy as walking into a bar, only in big hotels, and giving them money.

You also can buy it for your own home use at the liquor souq (store) if you have a license.

Hi all,

Could I ask the same question from the point of view of a bloke thinking of moving over to Doha. What is out there on the social scene and (not that I'm a raging alcoholic!) just how difficult is it to get a drink?

Regards to all,

BB

What do you mean by a "social life"? opportunities for picking up fit guys are legion, I'm told, even before you think about the locals. (I'm an old male so anything I say on that subject is hearsay.) More cerebral stuff such as music-making and drama (see recent mailings under Arts) is also plentiful, and there are cheerful sports clubs such as the Hash and the Rugby Club women's team. What there isn't much of is a varied bar culture, but try the hotels and Garvies.

The reference to being asked 'how much?' applies very much to Asian-looking women, I'm afraid, but not often to Westerners. Unless they think you're Russian.

Hi Hongkonger, from what I've seen, either you hate Doha or you love it. Personally I think wherever you go, your happiness is of your own making. There are quite a few social groups for ladies to join and if you have an open mind I'm sure you won't have trouble making friends.,...Like what La Jolla said, not much of a vibrant social scene but still people manage to make friends and have fun.

There are some girls from HK working in Doha ( Banks ). If you can neglect the stares on road or the nasty men asking you directly " How much ", then the life in Doha is not that hard. There are some ( not so much ) social life in Doha. Forget about the freedom of HK girls have at home.
