CMU-Q student’s app shows movie times in Qatar even when you’re offline
Driven by a desire to find a permanent solution to something that annoyed him, Abubaker Omer a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, used his technical skills to create a mobile app called 'Qatar Movies,' which allows users to view movie schedules in Qatar even when their mobile data is turned off.
The idea came to Omer when he was unable to check movie timings and details without switching on his mobile data while outdoors.
A movie enthusiast himself, Omer told his friend, whom he would often coordinate with for their movie plans, "I can create a mobile app that you can use to see showtimes even when you're offline."
And so he did.
The app, which was initially used by Omer and his friend, quickly gained popularity through word of mouth. It was launched in January this year and has already been downloaded by over a thousand users.
"People were really happy with the simplicity and ease of use of the app. My initial objective was making my friend and myself happy through offline mode, and I made hundreds happy by chance. It was a delightful surprise," Omer said.
With the app taking off amongst Qatar’s movie lovers, Omer is focusing his efforts on enhancing the features of the app.
For now, the app allows users to filter movies by time, genre or language. It is automatically updated with the latest data, which is viewable even when a user is offline.
Available for download both on Apple and Google stores, the app also lets users watch trailers, check IMDB ratings, share showtimes with friends via WhatsApp and other messaging services, as well as book tickets at some theaters.
Users can also book an Uber ride to the theater or find the theatre's location through the app's features.
Moving forward, Omer said, "I hope more users enjoy the app. And if you ask me what’s next: it’s making app users even happier."

So it updates in the background when it's connected to wi-fi. Great. Data is affordable now so I don't think "offline use" is such a hot topic these days. But I do hope it's easier to use and peruse than most of the movie listing websites.
