Did PMP add value to your career?

Also, the PMP exam is based on situations/scenarios, there are very few questions which is based on memory.
Hence if you have the 4500 hrs of Project Management experience and 35 hrs of PMP Training from REP (registered education partner of PMI) then you don't have to spend more than 2-3 weeks to prepare for the exam.
Conversely, if someone does not have experience and he tries to memorize the PMBOK still it will be difficult for him to pass the exam.
PMP Certification will definitely give you an edge over others. Also, many times in the job description they put PMP as a requirement for Project Managers.
Lastly, PMP will give you a good idea of the best practices in industry for managing your projects, hence the likelihood of failure of projects is decreased if you follow the PMI methodology.
alot of industries require PMP as a standard for recruitement.
Yes experience is more required than the PMP certificate but you can not even apply for the pmp without at least 450 hours of prior project management experience.
I took the exam and passed. it was problem-solving based and not the typical definition-based exam. the more you are welling to problem solve the more likely you are to do well in the exam.
good luck. also consider the PRINCE2 as a standard. it is also well recognised by many industries. PMP is american PRINCE2 is British

Kellys!!! There you are!! Long time no QL :)
Happy happy thanks for your post. Its added value to the likes of me.
When I used to interview candidates, never considered those 1 to 2 inch thick pile of certificates and recommendations. Was judging and appointing staff based on the persoal interview.
Certificates are added value.
The ideal situatin is having sufficient experience together with proper certificates. ===================================== http://www.qatarliving.com/node/58409
I read your post above, please rethink this, you never base your career and life decisions on a chat website ever! This is very faulty. (with all due respect to gerryqs's input).
Salam
Yes. PMP certification will make a difference in your professional and personal life as well. It has to be practiced in reality, otherwise it'll be just another stamped paper.
I'm assuming you have some level of managerial experience or at least have practiced the whole lifecycle of a project from initiating, planning, executing, monitoring to closing, else it would be extremely difficult to comprehend and apply PM's methodology, let alone the exam and the latter is challenging.
I'm afraid if you're thinking that PM material only provides ABCs, that either you haven't gone over all the chapters, or you're probably reading some other material..:)
Keep studying and keep us in the loop.
Salam
...but the ABC's are a good place to start no?
I agree with Brit.
while studying the PMI materials i felt that it is a very basic, Generic, generally speaking outlines of the project management. in short, you won’t be able to speak a language if you only know the ABCs!!
I can understand "studying". i need heaps of luck.. cos i have not actually started "studying" ;)
thanx anyways
PMP - Did not, but PIMP did...
I do think that any extra education and certification is of benefit to you. However, do it ONLY if you know that you will use it in your work..
Good luck with the exam safee...Im still "studying"
I've yet to clear the exam though.. :)
Hope to do it soon. Am sure it will be a bright feather on my cap..
In my opinion it is good. I've been working as a PM n doing reasonably well.. but on taking the PMP course, I discovered loads of information on how U can better do the job. That there is more to PM than the traditional ways adopted.
Especially since its done in a structured n organised manner and in international terms which ppl fr all over can understand and identify with. Having the PMP will empower U to take on PM jobs more confidently. Of cos experience also counts.
I am curious how these so called PMPs got their certificate if they cant even vouch for some basic experience. All depends on individual dedication.
I wud say go for it. Good luck.
lol jonboy...I was thinking the same thing. But Im sure it depends on the individual, so I think I'll stick with it.
i was going to do it but now that gerryqs has posted that comment, i don't think i'll bother now...
A PMP certificate is not worth the paper it is printed on. Employers want experience, a construction/project management degree and evidence that you started a project and completed a project. I have reviewed many cv's and the majority of people with PMPs have simply not delivered projects, they have been involved, spent a long time ghetting all sorts of qualifications but when you ask them about the basics of project management their lack of practical, varied experience, shines through.
