"Do not turn on CAR AC immediately"

This article is based on true facts!

Please do not turn on AC immediately as soon as you enter the car. Open the windows after you enter your car and turn ON the air-conditioning after a couple of minutes.

According to a research done, the car dashboard, sofa, air freshener emits Benzene, a Cancer causing toxin (carcinogen -

take note of the heated plastic Smell in your car). In addition to causing cancer, it poisons your bones, causes anemia,

and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure will cause Leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer. May also cause miscarriage.

Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50 mg per sq. ft... A car parked indoors with the windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene.

If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level & the people inside the car will inevitably inhale an excess amount of the toxins.

It is recommended that you open the windows and door to

Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidney and liver, and is very difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.

Oh thanks for your reply, right, I only press the indoor air circulation mode when the AC is on, and switch it off with the air con when not in use. I've never done otherwise with any previous car. I'll see if your tip works, thanks again.

I hope not, as the Carbon Monoxide detector was on the passenger seat next to me. I assumed it was the build up of all the car polution, while you wait in all the traffic jams in Doha :)

Hi the _prince, like I said in my post "while transporting the Carbon Monoxide detector between home and work", i.e. while driving.

On a related note, I bought a digital Carbon Monoxide detector while in the UK, and brought it back with me to Qatar.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to test the Carbon Monoxide levels at home and work, but found that the display level stayed on Zero both at home and work.

The interesting thing though, is that while transporting the Carbon Monoxide detector between home and work, it registered 30 (high Carbon Monoxide levels) while in the car for just 20 minutes!

I think the answer would be that you adjusted your car AC to the "outdoor air position". If you are not using AC, and you don't want hot air to flow in, turn the knob to the "indoor air" intake position.

Another suggestion (less probable), is that your car is too old :D

By the_prince• 18 May 2009 11:02

I think that starting the AC, not just air blows will allow the AC pipes to cool, making the AC cool faster when you close the windows.

Hello all having working in the Automotive industry for 15 years i can answer this one for you, I had the same email about 2 months ago. As some of you say if this were true then all the car manufacturers would already be out of business!!! forget the credit crunch it would have been LAW SUIT's against all manufacturers. Who ever carried out this research has potentially confused with Phenol alcoholic benzene which may come out of plastics, but is not carcinogenic.

All Plastics used in cars are tested in all conditions from extremely cold to exceptionally hot so you can rest assured there is nothing wrong with using plastics in cars, as for the AC use it you need it in this weather.

By tallg• 18 May 2009 09:35
tallg

I'm not an expert and was just passing on info given to me, but I'm guessing it just follows on from the fact that AC doesn't work effectively if windows are open. For this purpose it probably makes no difference.

By the_prince• 18 May 2009 09:28
the_prince

I open the windows to remove stall hot air as well, but what's the difference between using air blows and AC?

Tallg is right..it is better to drive for a minute with all the windows open, and the fan on...the car will cool quickly, and you get to blow out all the hot air inside..

...Avada Kedavra..

This is clearly bollocks, but on a more helpful note;

When you first get in the car, open the rear windows and stick the air blowers on full blast (not on AC, just on blow). After 30sec/1min of driving like this all the stale hot air will have been blown out the window. Then you can put the windows up and stick the AC on as normal.

Temps above 60 deg F? That would cover 90% of the world including Doha all year, how many people do you know in Doha that are dying off because of benzene poisoning?

Besides, even if it was true, the benzene is supposedly coming from the dashboard, sofa, and air freshener - what does that have to do with the AC?

So basically what you think is anyone who gets inside of a car is going to die. Granted there is some truth to that if you drive in Doha, but you need to watch out for the land cruisers and not the benzene. ;-)
