Mowasalat urged to operate smaller buses on busy roads

Mowasalt must deploy smaller buses or 12-16 seat vans on routes passing through busy areas as that would be more economical and cause less traffic congestions, many residents and commuters say.

According to them, the big buses are generally not even one-fourth full and their movement through such locations as Najma, Mansoura and Bin Ghanem, where roads are very narrow, causes major traffic problems.

“Already such areas face severe traffic jams and these buses only add to the woes,” said some shopkeepers in Najma.

Every time a bus stops, the entire traffic comes to a halt, one of them said.

“If smaller buses or vans are operated on such crowded roads, the traffic would be smoother and faster and there would be less wastage of fuel. Large buses could be operated on Thursdays and Fridays when more people travel,” said a regular commuter in Najma.

Passengers also point out that Bus Numbers 10, 11 and 12 have more passengers on the weekends, especially on Fridays and Mowasalt should consider introducing mini buses too.

Some other regular commuters said large buses could be shifted to areas where there is greater demand. “On the Industrial area and Al Khor routes there are always demands for more bus services and some of the buses running through the crowded areas could be diverted,” said a passenger.

Bus passengers are also looking forward to the introduction of “more effective and realistic city circular services.” They feel smaller buses could be deployed with better frequencies on the circular routes.

...Not only the buses but its the guys behind the wheel who are in need of a lot more training and need to change their attitude towards the passengers and to be made aware that they are not doing some charity work but are carrying passengers who are paying to get to their destination

More buses wont be the only solution to this issue

If the current buses were available every 10 to 15 minutes at the bus stops and more newer routes were operated, espcially the industrial area and the southern areas of Doha.

If the public transportation here is convenient, accessible and safe, more people will ride public transit. More people riding public transit equals less driving. Less driving equals a healthier planet.
