@Jones, you hit my point. It is not an employee's fault that no projects are coming in for the company. So morally speaking, it is improper to ask (or even request) an employee to take forced unpaid leaves. However, here in Qatar, nothing in the law is there to protect us from such scenarios. It is either you give in to what the company wants, or resign and go home. Either way, it is the employee's loss.
No. Its not possible. No article is there in any labour laws or companies commercial procedures. Either they need to provide NOC to change work or send back to home. They have to settle all the dues.
As @Chameleon said,Employer should pay your dues as agreed in the contract whether daily, weekly or monthly as long as you've reported to your working place on time and doesn't matter even there's no work to be done by "you" due to lack of projects cannot justify to keep employees off for more than 2 consecutive months, unless they're providing alternative like NOC /transfer to earn "basic needs" otherwise the moment they realize there's any liquidity issues they should pay all dues and send them back to their native...to avoid conflicts..
indeed britexpat....that's why we need a total reform on Qatar labor law. some workers are being hostage here. speaking of supposed amended labor law....until now it is nowhere to be seen. I wonder why? is Qatar really ready to change it?
some companies are sending their employees back home if the forced leave will take more than 2 months with a promised that they will just recall once the status gets better.
Sounds dodgy to me. I think you should still get paid as it is not your fault that the company has no projects. Where do they expect you to get money for your basic needs?

knor: the sad thing is that companies are abusing the system because they know that employees don't have any choice.
This option should clearly be stated in the contract

You should probably consult the Labor Department.
Have you checked your contract ? Is it mentioned there ?
yeah....it's a forced leave, 1-3 months or even 6-months, depends on the progress of the company.
