Expat wages keeping up with inflation?
By CelloMichael •
We all know that Local salaries have all jumped 40% leading many to believe that the cost of living would of course go up as well.
I don't know about you, but I just don't shop (except for food and petrol) anymore. Its just too damn expensive. On top of that it seems that the govt. have realised that everyone is DHLing everything in as Qatari goods seem to have a 30% markup. It's why customs duty has gone up so much!
How are expats doing out there? Are we due for a wages increase to keep up with inflation?
a big NO for me and I cannot do anything about it. They always say that they are processing it but nothing happen, so I'm not expecting any.
Yes it is about your entitlement. Your real earning power has gone down and you feel entitled for it to go back up.
If everyone receives the raise then the raise to locals is useless because inflation (caused mostly by rents) will absorb it.
Its not a question of entitlement, and it doesnt just affect expats. Its the fact that such high value pay increases in the government sector has the effect of increasing prices in the shops.
This means that the buying power available to non-governement sector workers is effectively reduced
Its not just expats but all private sector workers.
Salaries for nationals have jumped much more that 40% depending on sector.
If the individual expat believes he is essential to the company then he should request a raise. If the boss agrees then it happens. If a company believes all employees deserve such a raise then fine too. That is the company's choice.
The Qatar government decided all locals are deserving of such a raise. What entitles all expats for such a raise?
they keep on promising but then nothing has changed..
